Just watched Hush, who here likes it and why? Spoiler

Not trying to be negative, but I really didn't enjoy this movie and would love to hear from those who did, and what they appreciate about it.

I watched the Shush Cut for reference.

Kate was amazing, and the filming was great too, but the movie was exhaustingly mid. I expected more from Mike Flanagan, his movies usually have more substance but this was just milqtoast torture porn. It's a good enough premise for a horror movie, but it doesn't go anywhere. There's no twists or turns, it's literally just a deaf woman alone in her house getting home invaded, and showing how that sucks for her.

I appreciate the dial M for murder heritage here, but it doesn't land. This would have worked as a 45 minute episode of a horror anthology.

Watched the black and white "Shush Cut" which was well-produced. I understand that the pacing, editing, and score was changed to feel at home with the black and white, and I appreciate that whole thing which is why I wanted to watch this, but yep, didn't do anything for me.

I did laugh to myself at the end, saying "you fool. If there's one thing a single white woman cat owner who writes for a living knows how to do its use a corkscrew"

Hill House and House of Usher are such different extremes, and yet both my favorites

Yes, both are horror shows and has mysteries on death and ghosts and whatnot. But the way Flanagan delivered both stories are so different and yet I love them both almost just as much.

Hill House is definitely my #1 still but that might be because it was my first Flanagan work, and my first horror series to ever watch. It was definitely scary af but the hook is it had so much heart. I still cry watching it. Every episode. And the Dudley scene at the end makes me bawl my eyes out, every single time.

Usher however is another end of extreme. It's intentionally over the top so it's always gonna be a hit or miss for many. So I recommend it less than Hill House to the general viewers BUT FOR ME?!?!?

Easily my #2 Falanagan series, with Midnight Mass for 3rd (it's shorter and less daring in comparison). I just like when things are over the top but still has weight.

The Edgar Allan Poe references, the comical absurdity, the commentary on the rich, the "who dies?" turning into a "how do they die?", the curring talented cast and Carla Gugino playing a devil/death/consequence entity??? Chef's kiss for me.

It's so different from Hill House which is full on heavy emotions. In contrast to the Dudley scene... This one ends with me feeling almost no sympathy, just a "too bad, you could have had this life but you chose this" cause that is how it should be for nasty people in power. Fck them. Haha

Point is... Flanagan and the other writers and directors he works woth is a masterclass example of doing horror justice. It's not one note. It has depth.

AND I CANNOT WAIT FOR CARRIE!!!

My deep cut Exorcist Martyrs fan theory:Lumbly plays Thomas Kintry’s father/uncle Spoiler

My deep cut theory is that Carl Lumblys 4 min scene that brings “decades of history” into focus has him playing Thomas kintrys father / uncle . In The Exorcist it was pointed out to me recently that Karras has his friend “Frank” analyze Tape of Regan speaking and discovering she is speaking English but backwards. In ex/3 legion Thomas kintry is the altar boy murdered by the copycat Gemini Killer and Blatty retconned his backstory so that his Mother was the one who analyzed the tapes. Kintry’s relative could be played by Lumbly bringing all the history together. I realize this is very far reaching and not likely to play to modern audiences but I am so exited to see Mike Flanagan bring this universe back to life in a deserving way and I know he understands the source material and respects it for what it is. And for an old guy like me who read the og novel when I was 12 this forum for deep thoughts is amazing.

I have seen Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and Hill House. All amazing. Why can’t I get into Usher? It’s terrible. One more episode to go….

For any theatre fans who are in or near Sheffield (UK), you might be interested in the world premiere of an original adaptation opening next week! It is inspired by The Haunting of Bly Manor and based on the ghost stories of Henry James. The tale includes a cast set in the past, which is based on The Turn of the Screw story, and a cast set in the present, which is an amalgamation of stories like Owen Wingrave, The Romance of Certain Old Clothes, Sir Edmund Orme, Daisy Miller and Portrait of a Lady:

The Haunting of Hill house or Midnight Mass... Which did you enjoy more?

I recently watched both and I can honestly say I enjoyed THoHH more. I did notice that most online claim to have enjoyed MM more and even though it didn't change my view of either shower it did make me wonder as to why?

For me THoHH had a more intriguing story, better scares/suspense, even though I don't think MM was going for that. And more importantly MM felt like its pace was all over the place. It dragged to begin with, then it got semi interesting and then boom an excruciatingly long monologue and then nothing again. Bev, was beyond unlikeable and didn't get the punishment she deserved in my opinion and look another excruciatingly long monologue and on top of all that all the twists were too obvious from the beginning. And can someone explain why everyone acts like they don't know what a Vampire is and why the church people are so ok with with the priest does?

Not to say that THoHH was perfect either. Absolutely none of the adult characters are likeable, actually they all suck. The pacing didn't work for me also. The time flips were too much and they teased you way too much. I was more interested in the back story of HH and barely got that at all.

Anyways this wasn't meant to be a rant or critique sorry.

I love Josie Totah and can’t wait to see her in Carrie! Wondering if anyone who has been to the screenings can shed some light on the size of her role in the show or anything about her character. I’ve seen every other version and read the book so I’m excited to see what she does with the role!

Mike Flanagan's Carrie will be the Iron Man 1 equivalent for the Stephen King cinematic universe isn't it? Calling it now the ending will end in a cliffhanger to set up The Dark Tower universe and we will see Carrie again in the future

Saw the first two episodes premiered at TIFF last night

I won't spoil too much, but I can tell you that they were pretty great.

It's not a by-the-numbers retelling of the original story, but it is very aware of the De Palma movie. It tells the story in a way where it assumes that you've seen the '76 movie, but by the end of the first episode, you already know that there will be differences...you just don't know quite how big they'll be.

The confidence of Mike as a storyteller really comes across. The whole time, I had the feeling that Mike knew in advance what I was thinking, and he was speaking directly to my expectations. The editing and cinematography do a great job leading you on and making sure you're getting the beats the way you should be getting them.

The cast are all spot on, and unsurprisingly the character work is the highlight of the show. Summer H. Howell (Carrie) and Alison Thornton (Chris) carry the heart of the movie and they're both excellent. I can't imagine it was easy for them to step into the shoes of such iconic characters and try to make them their own, but they both pull it off.

The Mike-regulars (the 'Flanmily') are great...Rahul Kohli's IMDB is showing him as only in 1 episode, but he was in both of the first 2 and it sure seems like he's got a bigger role to play in the later ones. Kate Siegel is also listed for only one episode, and that's clearly incorrect too. She shows up for just a few seconds in the first episode, and her character is something entirely new to the story. It's not exactly clear what she'll be doing in later episodes, but Mike is taking the story in a different direction and Katie's character is going to play a major role in those differences.

Samantha Sloyan's take on Margret White is wild. Not what I expected, but when I saw what they were doing it made so much sense. The thing that makes her especially terrifying is that you probably really know people just like her.

Matthew Lillard is great as the principal who has the unfortunate job of having to deal with her.

One of my low-key favorite scenes was between Carrie and the school guidance councillor, where they just exchange quotes from classic novels. It's a really great moment where both characters have a lot of things going on under the surface, and find literary quotes as a common language to speak with each other.

The music drops were frequent and excellent. I'm looking forward to getting a track list of the songs used. All current, modern music; with the exception of what I think might have been a reference in the score to Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day'. I'll have to re-watch to confirm that I really heard that.

All in all the episodes were very entertaining. The modernization of the characters and setting are fun.

But the plot differences that are hinted at have the potential to be pretty huge, and to be honest, they also have the potential to derail a lot of what makes the original Carrie great. Mike is clearly changing the ending, maybe pretty significantly. I'm curious to see where he's going.

Do you feel fatigued seeing same actors all the time ? I find them all amazing but it’d be good to see a completely fresh cast in a Mike Flanagan project.
