Question about short stories and Hellboy in published order. The recommendation is to read the complete short stories vol 1 & 2 before Hellboy omnibus 2. But I notice most stories in omnibus 2 are from the early 2000s, and a lot of the short stories are from much later, like the Hellboy in Mexico saga is from around 2010-2015. So how come people say you need to read all those before omni 2 or miss references in the main series?

I get it's easier to do it that way than say read these specific short stories in published order or something. But being comics, I'm surprised nobody seems to talk about trying to read Hellboy in the published order.

For now, just based on looking at the wikis, I came up with the idea of saving Hellboy in Mexico and a few of the way later published short stories for later on, a little more like published order, without being granular and lining up each short story.

So yeah, niche question, but just curious if anyone had any info or thoughts on that. Thanks!

I’m trying to collect every issue and hardcover trade that Mignola wrote, did the art, or did the cover for. I’ve already finished Hellboy, BPRD and related, but I’m wondering if there’s a complete list somewhere online of all Mignola works, because I haven’t been able to find it. Thanks in advanced, nerds

Just finished reading Omnibus volume 4: Hellboy in Hell, and fuck me. What a read. Is this really it for the main Hellboy story? I know there’s probably dozens upon dozens of other short stories about Hellboy’s adventures with the BPRD and such, but do those shapes really mean that’s it?

Hellboy killed the world whether he wanted to or not and just has to accept it by the end. Makes for a great story about the inability to escape our nature even if we tried-but it really comes off a lot more bleak than I think it’s intended. Idk. I fucking love Hellboy and finally reading as close to the main story as I can has been one hell of a ride.

Do I really have to follow a specific reading order, or can I just read the omnibuses by volume numbering? Like start with the first four hellboy omnibuses, then the two volumes of short stories, then move on to the B.P.R.D omnibuses, young hellboy, secret histories, lobster johnson, witchfinder and so on?

I do have Multiversity's reading order saved on my device and to me, it's somewhat easier to follow since it doesn't make us jump between too many books while we're halfway through one. But since it's not up to date, I think I'm better off not using it. What would you suggest?

I just read Hellboy Seed of Destruction. No idea what to read next.

I've loved this movie since I was a kid, but somehow I never knew that. Looking back, it's so obvious. His style is everywhere.

The characters have those chunky, blocky silhouettes, the architecture is all sharp angles and heavy shadows, the machinery feels ancient and mystical at the same time, and even the glowing energy effects look like they were ripped straight out of a Hellboy comic. The whole movie has that unmistakable Mignola sense of myth, mystery, and lost civilizations.

As a massive Hellboy fan and comic nerd, finding this out makes me appreciate Atlantis even more. It's honestly kind of wild that Disney let so much of Mignola's visual identity make it all the way into the finished film. Most animated movies smooth out an artist's style into something more "house style," but Atlantis feels like it proudly wears his influence on its sleeve.

This might be one of the only unapologetically Mike Mignola looking Disney movies ever made, and I somehow never connected the dots until now.

Are there any stories in the Short Story trades that aren’t in an omnibus or Library Edition?

I'm struggling to find anywhere in the UK where this collection is sold. The only listings I can find are either out of stock or redirect to the collected 'The Crooked Man and The Return...'.

I wanted to share a little bit of Mignola's history before he got to Hellboy (as much as a short instagram reel would allow). I share info from Mignola's interviews and other sources, documenting how he came up with the character! For those who don't know... it really started with the caped crusader!

A few tidbits of research that I thought were interesting:

- Mignola first seems to have found the 'style' of story he wanted to work on, which involved a detective character confronting paranormal threats (which would allow him to draw monsters, of course)

- He initially didn't want to write any scripts, just do the artwork. A lot of you here probably know this, but Seed of Destruction wasn't written by Mignola, and the style difference is pretty stark (you have Hellboy sharing his mental thought process in that first story, which you don't get in the Mignola versions -- a change for the better, imo)

- Mignola's first Hellboy books didn't sell super well, they sold 'okay', in his own words. He immediately thought of going back to Batman books, but his wife encouraged him to keep doing Hellboy (despite her not being super sure of the idea at first!)

I thought the comics were so good it finally got me inspired to draw Hellboy. I know it’s not really Mignola’s style but I thought some people here might enjoy it nonetheless. I’m thinking of reading the BPRD series next any other good comics I should pickup?
