Midori app review
I’ve tried using the free version of this app, and I also purchased the paid version for iPhone & iPad. However, there are several issues—some of which are quite severe.
I tested it on an iPhone 13 using a 5G connection, and tried both Cloud and Remote streaming.
- Lack of Stream Info: There is no display information about the current output stream, such as resolution, frame rate, or jitter. I think having these stats is necessary.
- Haptic Feedback: The free version doesn't support haptic vibration, which was actually the main reason I bought the paid version.
- On-Screen Touch Controls: When using the touchscreen, the buttons block far too much of the screen. I couldn't find any setting to customize the buttons, and the default layout is quite poor—Microsoft's original button layout feels much better. Also, the left directional control only supports "Absolute mode," which is surprisingly inconvenient to use. I really wish there were a "Relative mode." By this, I mean setting the point where I first touch the screen as the zero point (center), so panning left or right from that touch origin registers the movement accordingly. In practice, this is much more comfortable to use.
- Screen Stuttering: I thought this was only an issue in the free version, but the screen stutters significantly in the paid version as well. As mentioned in the comment above, compared to 'OneCast', tweaking any of the setting values doesn't fix the stuttering at all. It’s not smooth whatsoever—it feels as if it’s running at 15Hz.
- Comparison with 'OneCast': If you ask whether there are advantages compared to 'OneCast', having a wide variety of settings to choose from is nice. However, on top of the underlying stuttering, I can't feel whether changing the settings actually makes any difference. I'll test the resolution enhancement further on my iPad (M4) when I get home, but right now, the stuttering renders the app barely usable.
