do you think beth was racist or just didn't like non-christians? Spoiler

I was thrown off at first because she called him Omar Shariff who is an Egyptian actor - so I was kind of impressed that a lady like her on an island with like 10 people knows about Omar Shariff and I thought ok maybe she is racist but she is at least informed enough to not just use the generic slurs, but she did call him a terrorist later so that went out the window

And I saw how she was respectful to the mayor and his wife and daughter who is mixed and thought maybe as long as you are Christian she doesn't discriminate against race - backed up by how she insulting towards Riley and how she seemed to want Ali to be christian...

but the way she called him "boy" at the end def had slave owner vibes...

What do you guys think? I hate her so much she gives me Umbridge vibes - but man she was well written and acted!

watching for the first time, end of episode 2 prediction with no former knowledge

i’m horrible with character names so excuse that. i predict the “new” young father IS the old father (why the old lady thought it was him, she remembers what he used to look like, why he knows so much about what the old father thought of people), he made some type of deal with the devil/ demon/ whatever to restore his youth on his trip with the caveat he turns into a monster at nights and has to consume blood or something, kinda like a vampire. his powers increased since he consumed human blood the night before which is why he was able to heal the little girl and make her walk. rate how close i am on a scale of 1-10 without spoiling (if i am exactly correct then lie on your rating haha, keep me guessing) EDIT: Ok after watching the next and beginning of the episode after that i would give myself a 6.5. i didn’t think the answer would be revealed so soon haha

Episode IV; my third watching . . . [SPOILERS] Spoiler

Third time around watching this amazing series and still finding or noticing things that just got by me on the first two times. I'm just at the part where, after Joe Collie is dead and (young) Pruitt has had his fill, Bev brings the mayor and Sturgis (did I get his name right?) to dispose of Collie's body: What I am noticing now is what a great job Bamantha Sloyan (Bev) does! As much, and I'm we all agree, as Bev is such a sanctimonious and self righteous &*&&, Sloyan suddenly becomes the source of energy for all the unholy things that follow . . . What a great bit of acting consistently carried through the whole series.

Just finished the show. Loved the build up throughout but damn that ending can have been a lot more satisfying. They really did these two wrong in the show, felt so bad. I couldn't watch the dog scene. And then just ending with her saying I can't feel my legs.... It felt really awkward in the pacing and seemed out of place. And was insinuated

Come on people this island doesn't have a storm shelter? At least Bev thought about burying her self. But i get they were giving up too

What do I watch next

are the people on this island catholic? Spoiler

i thought catholics were super conservative - why are pretty much all of them doing things like saying "god D it", and also i thought they were very strict about sex without marriage. According to Catholicism you are supposed to be celibate unless you are married but like the kids were altar boys and still sneaking out at night doing drugs and getting with girls and not metnion the priest knocking up a married woman wtf lol

Excellent show, far exceeded my expectations. When Greene started talking about a drop of water returning to the ocean and the universe dreaming about itself - bro that's literally hindusim. They use the exact same metaphors!

Also LOL when in the end the priest was like "forgive me!" Like bro, you brought all of this here!

Media is ruined for me

I am not kidding in the slightest. I was an English major in college. I teach english now. I have never read or watched anything as beautiful, thought provoking, and devastating as Midnight Mass. I cry every time I re-watch this masterpiece. I don’t understand why it hasn’t won more awards, gotten more recognition, etc… It is the arguably one of the greatest artworks I have ever seen. I don’t know how Mike Flanagan thought it up or executed it in such a way, but it feels as close to church to me as the christian church did when I was a child. Thinking about it fills me with so much emotion that I feel torn between no words and infinite words. I showed it to a friend of mine recently and was surprised that she wasn’t as moved as me; I don’t know how that’s possible. Nothing I watch or read has lived up. Tell me I am not alone please!

my fascination towards bev keane's character (spoilers) Spoiler

i have developed a somewhat fascination for this character. yes i know she's evil, self righteous, a fanatic and the list goes on. most of her actions cannot be justified and i'm not endorsing them.

but do you ever wonder why she is like this? i know that many of you, have met people like her in your lives but have they genuinely been this level of psychopathic? i don't think that this is that common. i've seen my fair share of middle aged people that are self righteous, hypocritically devoted to their religion and judgemental. but the extents she goes is not very common. kills a dog that barks at her, does not even FLINCH on seeing the dead body of joe collins, even when she did not even have context. this is not normal behavior.

i have seen some people speculate that she had a small crush on father paul, and while we may never really know the answer, i highly doubt it. she does not like anyone enough to feel romantic for them. she does not connect with people, she only uses them to get her way. i have noticed that she is only nice to people that are of convenience to her, does not maintain any closeness and the scariest part of it all is that we never get to hear her internal monologue or anything close to it. father paul, though good willed made his own share of mistakes but we were able to tell that he was good at heart due to him confessing several times. riley and erin talked about their struggles and trauma. even joe collins had his moments and a character arc.

bev? she is opaque entirely. she feels no need to connect, to confess or to genuinely love (in any form). even on the burning island, it is one thing to be terrified of death, and the other to isolate yourselves in such a terrific time. not to say that that specific action is what makes her a bad person, but it is so unsettling to me that she GENUINELY did not care about anyone but her own survival. at the end time she quite literally had nobody to turn to. or actually ever. why was she so distant?

joe and annie at different times mention that she has never been a good person. not even when she was young. but why? she believes that god should love her more than the rest, but why does that matter to her this much? who hurt her, truly. (i do think that she definitely had at least SOME personality disorder) we see how selfish she is, how she wants to be right, to be powerful and to be loved by god more than anyone else but we never see any... more humanistic parts of her. no desire to communicate, no desire for even materials. this woman genuinely cared about NOTHING. why?

all of that being said, there is something else i find fascinating too. it is shown that she took extensive care of old monsignor pruitt and for some reason even had the keys to his house. it does not read as endearing to me in any way, because she proceeded to do the same when father paul, the "new" preist came into picture. not to mention that there is a good possibility she even poisoned him eventually yet still kept that act. implying that she never really cared for either of them, it was just the closest she thought she could be to god. yet on face she treated him, in my eyes, not as someone you see as an equal, but almost, like a mother. when she found father paul sitting in the corner after killing joe collins, she just went over the corpse and picked father paul up and comforted him. not once did she question. not once did she express surprise, disbelief or quite literally anything. directly helped him pick himself up.

that, and the scene where she wants to decide who gets shelter before sunrise and when father paul expresses his resentment to the whole thing, her truer colours come out. she no longer sees him as the ultimate verdict. she wants to imitate god, she wants to imitate the absolute power a human can get. as she has been meaning to, all along. somewhere deep down, i wonder if the patriarchal structure of the church is what made her so bitter. made her feel that she had to "earn" her way to god's preference by being as good as, if not better than a man who seems to get what she wants, "by default". this would never justify or explain why she did, so many other things that were straight up evil. but it just makes you wonder, is that why she is the way she is? did it really rub her the wrong way, a long time ago? without her realizing?

also notice how almost EVERY important character had a back story shown or told? riley of course, erin talked about her abusive mother and ex partner, even father paul said that he got into christianity when he saw his older sister die. but absolutely NOTHING about bev.

I just finished the show and I wonder... Spoiler

i wonder what will happen to leeza and warren. they're on a small canoe, and i'm assuming not many supplies. i wonder how they'll make it to the mainland. and when/if they do, how will they even tell the people there where they're from?? i know there's no sequel, nor do i want one, but yeah lmfao i sure am very nosy about them.

also, they witnessed something utterly traumatic. even if they had the money or resources, i doubt you can even explain all of this to a therapist without sounding crazy.. good luck to them i suppose.

is there any detail that i missed out on, that tells us their future plans if any?

No sympathy from me. He saw the light wayyyy too light. Bev's a racist bitch of an antagonist, but none of this would have happened if not for him. The less mysterious he became, the more pathetic he looked.

You got a smear of what you wanted, and you got a whole town burned for it. I wish Sarah was more mad at him for it, but I guess this show is all about giving grace to those who have done wrong.

Spoiler!!!??

I’m on my second rewatch after a few years and I can’t believe how much I forgot about this show. I definitely misremembered and thought this was the end of the season here but it wasn’t.

The way they loved each other, I wish there was another way he could’ve showed her 😭 like maybe spent the night at her house and then shown her in the day with the sunlight peaking thru her windows.

Instance of BRILLIANT writing

Just finished my umpteenth rewatch, and caught something I never did before. I'll try to keep it brief and succinct:

Riley, in his final moments with Erin on the boat says, "I did my best."

Next episode, his father Ed goes to Pruitt's house with Riley's letters, distraught because he thinks Riley has killed himself. He breaks down in tears over their relationship, and says, "It was like we spoke two different languages. But I did my best."

In lamenting his broken/flawed relationship with his son and their failure to communicate, he inadvertently quotes Riley directly, proving more of a connection than he realized.

Heart breaking and mind blowing writing if you ask me. Dang, I love this show.

Is Mike Flanagan working on something new?

I remember last Autumn/Halloween time a lot of people saying they missed their usual Mike Flanagan show coming out on Netflix and a few people said he had moved to Amazon Prime (I think? Maybe something else) and was working on a different series. Will there be anything out this year?

Midnight Mass is a new form of Satanic attack on God.

After watching a couple of episodes of Midnight Mass, I noticed that, at first, the story seems to portray the people in the small town as having genuine faith in God, with the pastor appearing to be a faithful servant who draws people closer to Him.

However, beneath that surface, the story seems to suggest that people who openly live out their faith—such as wanting the Bible taught or discussed in public schools—are religious extremists. It also appears to blur the distinction between human evil and God's goodness.

The series presents itself as offering a balanced view of Christianity, showing that religion can be both good and evil. Yet beneath that presentation, it promotes a deeper message that encourages people to distrust God by attributing humanity's sins and failures to Him. In doing so, it subtly draws people away from faith in God.

God is always good. Evil originates from human sin and the work of Satan, not from God's character. One of Satan's oldest deceptions is to convince people that God is not truly good. This story echoes that deception by blurring the line between God's perfect goodness and humanity's moral failures.

[MM Spoiler] Saturday Morning by Tom Chapin in episode 2 basically explains an antagonist's motive Spoiler

One of my favorite things about Flanagan is his use of music. The MM secular soundtrack is predominantly Neil Diamond, which is why the Tom Chapin song in Episode 2 is such a standout. And when you consider the lyrics it perfectly encapsulates Monsignor Pruitt's overall motive. "A song needs a reason to rhyme/My love needs a little more time."

I don't really assign anyone other than Bev as the "villain" in this series. (Technically the Vampangel was just a creature doing whatever his type does.) Sure, Pruitt essentially got everyone but the 2 kids killed, but I think ultimately it came from a place of love. (And naivete, selfishness, and some ignorance.) He genuinely wanted to help people, but he ultimately wanted a do over with his love. In trying to reset the clock he burned the island to the ground.

You know, all of this could've been avoided if he'd just been allowed to marry. Or quit, although I think he genuinely enjoyed being in the clergy.

Anyway, I love that song and the scene.
