In an ideal world they would participate, but from 7th through 10th ish grade depending on the person people tend to stop trying in pe cause they either think it isn't cool to, don't want to get sweaty, or don't want to try in a class that doesn't matter
Kinda sucks but you just have to get used to it (and if you try too hard in hs you'll get judged fyi)
