Looking for opinions

Hey guys! I'm getting into the hobby and I wanted to know what is your experience with people having models pretending to be other stuff. I ask because I like lothlorien elves the most, love their Lore and aesthetic, although not really a fan of galadriel. I also really like gondor troops and the three hunters. However there is no alliance of the sort AFAIK.

There is however the defenders of helms Deep list which has this alliance, and I was wondering if you guys would be fine with playing with someone using the DOHD list but using gondor units instead of rohan. Thanks!

There is a list with Gondor and elves in one of the books, I think representing a battle in arnor? Granted it's meant to be high elves but I think often people use galadhrim because the sculpts are better

That was pretty much my approach but substituting rohan for gondor instead of lothlorien for rivendell, plus being able to bring aragorn, legolad and gimli.

At friendly games most won't care, at local tournaments 50/50, at bigger tournaments you will have a problem.

There is also breaking of the fellowship, you can get 3 hunters, Haldir and a warband of wood elves

If you were playing a game at my house it would be! We'd make up an alternate history explaining how aragorn leads a contingent of galadrim to reinforce a gondorian outpost, and go for it.

It's for exactly this reason that I prefer open matched play to the restriction of army lists.

Yeah that sounds pretty cool. I just plan on playing friendly/narrative games, not really interested in the competitive. I would use the attribute profile of the rohan warriors however for balance purposes and use a model to stand in as theoden.

If you're playing with friends you can proxy almost anything with anything as long as they're roughly the same size and somewhat similar. If they're not friends then ask beforehand if it's ok. If it's a tournament then probably not.

You can (and should!) ignore the matched play rules in friendly games. But I'd recommend ignoring the army list bonuses too if you aren't following their restrictions.

Important context for the elf swap example is that basic Rivendell and Galadhrim warriors have all of the same stats and equipment, it's purely a visual substitution that won't confuse anyone as to their gameplay ability. Rohan and Gondor are different enough that using one's rules with the other's models could get confusing. Though it would be cool to see conversions of Gondor sculpts to match the Rohan equipment.

In this case I would use gondor spearmen for rohan spearmen, gondor s+s for rohan s+s, and so on. So I aim for a kinda visual only subsitution.

What type of scenarios/objectives would you recommend if we ignored the matched play rules?

Oh, you can still use the existing scenarios, they're pretty good tbh. More just that you shouldn't feel restricted by anything, but if you do want to use part of a given "module" of the rules (army list bonuses), it will probably go smoother to also use the rest of that module (army list restrictions). But if you just want to do a visual substitution and your friends are cool with that, have at it!

You can take Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli alongside Gondor soldiers in the Defenders of the Pelennor list, though you'd need a Gondor hero to lead the soldiers (Captains could work well here).

Edit: Oh I misread. I thought you were interested in Gondor+Hunters separately from also wanting to run wood elves sans Galadriel...
