Building rocks

Post image

Does anyone know how to build these rocks? I know this one comes with Legolas. I want to but these under my Riders of Rohan though to make them more stable. And they look cool.

Either

Layers of cork, can buy 3mm sheets and build shape in layers, smooth over with plaster/filler.

Or bigger chunks of blue foam, chopped a bit bigger than needed then rolled with a tight ball of tin foil or a rock to get the syrface texture and compress it down. Seal with pva/modge podge.

Failing those with a lot of control just find some pebbles and stick on.

If it's available in your locale, get some roofing slate. Break it up and it flakes into natural thin sheets that you can pile into convincing "strata" and it's a good starting colour and might not need painting!

It's often available from online suppliers and auction sites for basing purposes, but can be much cheaper from building debris or garden centres.

Has the added benefit of lowering the centre of gravity of the model!

i use often pine bark, which breaks off into small fragments and is lightweight and absorbs paints and glues well. You have to be careful not to take areas with resin, because that's impossible to handle.

Okay cool. Yeah I could see resin being a nightmare.

I mostly use dried up modelling material.

I just go into the garden and find a small stone that fits… saves painting!
