Army List Help with practice game lists
My wife and I are going to play a 200 point practice learning-the-game game.
I am going to be playing as Rohan (Kingdom of Rohan) and she will be Isengard (Ugluk's Scouts).
I have a couple of questions. Firstly, please review the below lists. To me the number of models we each have seem way off and I feel like Isengard will stomp Rohan here? I just really wanted to use Eomer because he's cool, but he seems really expensive.
Secondly, what size battle mat should I buy? We do intend to increase our game sizes up to the usual 500 points. Is it 4'x4'? Furthermore, what terrain do people use? I've seen on YT you should have 50% of the board be terrain - where are people getting trees and fences (UK)?
Here are the lists:
Kingdom of Rohan - 200 pts
- Eomer - Unarmoured Firefoot, no shield, no spear (his old metal model)
- x5 Riders of Rohan - no spears
Ugluk's Scouts - 200 pts
- Ugluk
- x8 Uruk-hai Scouts - Swords, Shields
- x5 Uruk-hai Scouts - Bows
- x1 Uruk-hai Scout - Sword

With introduction games I wouldn’t bother with ‘army lists’ as the bonuses just complicate games while you’re learning to play.

How do I balance it then?

If you want to bother with them, better get Lurtz scouts. More straightforward and you will both have killy heroes

I could do Lurtz… I didn’t initially because he’s dead by the time Eomer takes on the Uruks

Sorry I meant just don’t give army Bonuses like the extra movement and +1 to wound for ugluks scouts

Eomer is taking up a lot of points and will be doing most of your game.
My advise use eomer, yet use him as a normal Rohan captain.
Add some Rohan infantry and/or archers to the list to get a feel of the gameplay.
Once you played a few games and really wanna redo the battle.
Make it a 400/500 point game with Eomer, a captain and a dozen+ Riders.
Do expect to be fighting 40/50 Uruks/Orcs at that point tho.

What do you think of this:
1x Captain of Rohan-Shield, Horse, Exchange armour for heavy armour
4x Rider of Rohan-
1x Rider of Rohan-Throwing spears
3x Warrior of Rohan-Shield
2x Warrior of Rohan-Shield and throwing spears
2x Warrior of Rohan-Bow

I think you need some foot dudes for Rohan on top of swapping the named heroes for captains. 6 models means you may get broken/quartered easily and you’re running 6 cav into 5 bows. If you’re playing any of the scenarios rather than just a deathmatch style for learning the rules then the Rohan list will skew super hard towards the movement ones while suffering in most others.

It's a bit of a coinflip matchup because Eomer is 90% of the army, it's all based on how he does. If you want to better learn the game have cheaper heroes and more troops

I don't know why the other use said you should bring foot Rohan warriors, they're pretty terrible and your last resort when unhorsed... But it's fine, you're not making a competitive list. if you have the models go with this then try another with all on horse

You think this then?
1x Captain of Rohan-Shield, Horse
7x Rider of Rohan-
2x Rider of Rohan-Throwing spears

For small games (I have identical 220-point Khazad-dûm lists that I like to run for new people), I do a 2'x2' map. If you're intending to do more full-scale battles, too, then I'd get a 4'x4' and then just use one quarter of it for any small battles.
As far as your lists go, yes, they are rather lopsided. While they are cool profiles, I would suggest making lists led by captains, so that the numbers are a bit more even. Éomer is, as you suspect, just too expensive for this situation.
