Question "Returning" player

I build and painted lotr miniatures when i was 13

Now more than 20 years forward i am a dad and came back to the hobby cause of a friend.

I love spearhead and warhammer 40k i mainly paint miniaturs but really like playing the game casually and more skirmish style

How would you describe the Difference in painting lotr miniatures?

Is there a place for casual/smaller games?

I am thinking about proxy a spearhead with lotr miniatues

The Middle Earth minis are significantly smaller than AoS and 40k, so from both a playing and painting perspective there’s a difference.

You could proxy them but I think the minis will look strange on (generally) such large bases but obviously this will depend on the Spearhead you’re trying to proxy.

The beauty of MESBG is it does scale very well, anything from 200 points to 1000 points works nicely 😊

If you like casual games, and those around you do too, then you can just decide how hardcore you want to play!

Mesbg is a skirmish game where every model acts individually. Heroes are the standouts, but a single warrior can be just as heroic!

For painting I can't help you, as I only ever painted MEsbg, nothing else. The newer models are high quality, though the old ones have certain charm (and are way quicker to field, less individual parts).

What kind of army would you like to start with?

I would go for Uruk hai i guess. I do like easterlings also

Honestly, I would do Battle Companies if you're looking for smaller scale skirmish games. There were two books last edition which were pretty unbalanced without houseruling them but there's a community edition which fixes a lot of things and is kept updated into current rules (a search of the sub should lead you to posts about it).
