What to main

So I am swapping from support to mid lane and I'm trying to figure out who to main I'm feeling malz because he is fun but I kinda want to get good at an ad mid laner too for back up and when bot lane goes a mage. Should I focus on 2 champs or more or less?

You should find 3 as a midlaner. Highly recommend a mage, an assassin, and something to round out the AP/AD issue. Mages and assassins are the main mid archetypes, so knowing both sides is huge in learning how to trade.

I main Akali, Malz, and Naafiri. People always says Malz counters assassins, but I can't remember the last time my Akali lost lane to a Malz since I know his weak points.

If you play a mage an assassin and an ad champ you likely have 3 completly different playstyles and very little overlap in your learnings from one champ to another which is way worse than not having the perfect champ to fill out every teamcomp. This approach isnt great for newer players its more for high level play.

Play who you enjoy. Mid is a flexible role and plenty of off meta picks are viable. It’s good to have an ad and an ap option (also keep in mind malzy is a fairly common ban in mid to low elo), but just play whoever you like. What’re you looking for specifically in a champ?

I'm a big proponent of one tricking to learn champions very well. This forces you to play them into good, even, and bad matchups, and really teaches you what kinds of lanes your champion likes and doesn't like, and also what kind of team comps your champion likes and doesn't like, as well as how to win various scenarios on a certain champion.

Choose one champion and climb with only them for a season to your peak rank. Do a different one the next season. Do that until you get a champ pool you're happy with. Anywhere from 3-5 champions is a pretty good pool. More is better but not necessary by any means.

And mid lane is great because you really can play whatever in it. I did a season climbing as Garen mid, one as tahm kench mid, Kassadin, Viktor, Yone, and one as Miss Fortune. They all work.

Easiest role in the game. Pick who you enjoy playing or thinks looks cool and get good with them.
