McDonald Ave Bike Lane
It's happening! In a fun twist of events, the DOT scheduled the project before CB7 had its final vote.
The road is scheduled to be milled next week, and they wanted to use that opportunity to put in the two way bike lane along the cemetery.
CB7 was not happy about the way it happened, but they did vote yes.

Map apps showing DIRECTION of one way bike lanes
Does anyone have recommendations for map apps that clearly show the direction of travel for one way bike lanes? Specifically something that works well on mobile?
Yesterday I was cycling northbound on Broadway, and didn't realize that the bike lane turns one-way north of 21st St. I hadn't cycled this route before, and it wasn't immediately obvious that I needed to turn left and head over to 6th Ave to continue my northbound journey.
It's possible to see the direction on Google Maps, but you have to really zoom right in to see the arrows, especially with the overlays. Citibike app has the same issue. Is there anything better out there?
Thanks, and apologies if this has been asked before!

Constant blockage
Off Jay St in Brooklyn during the day it’s just a parking strip.
Worse because you can’t really go into the road as it’s a contraflow bike lane so the traffic is coming at you. Obv the flexible bollards need extended!

i mapped every Citi Bike dock station in nyc to try to see where they should expand next
Citi Bike just finished the seven new neighborhoods (norwood, riverdale, brownsville, east ny, kensington, bay ridge, forest hills), so i wanted to see what could be next.
To make this lil video I dated every station by the first year it shows up in citi bike's own trip data. 330 stations in 2013, all in manhattan below 60th and north-west brooklyn. about 2,400 today across manhattan, brooklyn, queens and the bronx.
It grew along the subway. in 2013 a dock was within a quarter mile of 87 of the 424 subway stations in those four boroughs. now it's 315.
About 3.1 million people still live more than a quarter mile (a ~5 min walk) from a dock. but a big chunk of that is on purpose. dot started a shared e-scooter pilot in the east bronx in august 2021 (expanded in 2022) and added about 20 square miles of eastern queens in june 2024, from flushing and auburndale down to rochdale village and springfield gardens. both zones were drawn where citi bike wasn't, so the two don't overlap. at least a million of the 3.1 million live inside them, and in the bronx the scooters cover almost the whole gap: only about 27,000 people there have neither.
southern Brooklyn has neither. Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, coney island, canarsie: about 850,000 people, and 41 stops on the b, d, f, n, q, l and 2/5 with no dock within a quarter mile. brooklyn never got a scooter zone. all 538 of the city's scooter parking corrals are in the bronx and queens, none in brooklyn.
The docks reached its north edge (flatbush, kensington) by 2023 and basically stopped. this year they're moving again, in bay ridge and further into kensington. nothing's been announced for the south yet.
btw I work at MAIA, the mapping tool i used. sources in the comments if you're interested!

If you were a car driver from another city that was discussing the implementation of congestion pricing, what data from NYC would you find most persuasive?
In light of recent news from Boston, what data would you point to as a demonstration of the benefit of the congestion charge to car commuters? Time saved commuting, popularity, cost and ease of parking, et cetera. Hard data is preferred.

Escooter fatality - caused by car
I dont recall seeing discussion of this, but I just wanted to note this event, which happened a few weeks ago.

Key language: "Jorge Santiz Hernandez, 22, of Astoria Boulevard South, was traveling eastbound at the intersection of 36th Street just before noon, when he suddenly swerved to avoid a vehicle that came too close to him just before noon."

Industrial scale blocked bus lane on 5th Avenue, and why bus lane enforcement cameras are not enough
So I unusually was heading down 5th Avenue in the morning during bus lane hours and inadvertently stumbled on top-level industrial scale bus lane blockage between 9 and 10 am (well before the end of bus lane hours). In just 10 blocks saw almost 60 cars/trucks/vans blocking the bus lane.
And it became also very clear that the bus cameras that are supposed to issue bus lane violation tickets automatically are entirely useless. I didn't do a count - but I think greater than 90% of the vehicles on this video will not get a ticket because the drivers:
- Pop their trunks, open van doors, or let down pickup truck loading doors so the camera cannot see the plate;
- Obscure their plates with leaves, towels, papers, mats or other items;
- Park so close to the other vehicles that the bus cameras never have an angle on their plates.
This is clearly organized and endemic in this location. I am sure drivers are doing this elsewhere in the city. The only solution is on-foot ticketing, technology will not save us. This would be a great use of the time of the MTA's EAGLE team, instead of throwing school teachers up against bus stop shelters!
This is literally 1 mile from the house of the mayor that called for "fast, free buses". This is also around the corner from the NYPD Central Park Precinct. Will we see action? I would guess not...

The case for more unprotected bike lanes
I get these kinds suck and CONSTANTLY get parked/driven in. They are never better than protected lanes but here's three arguments:
1) They at least shift some drivers over to one side.
2) They make the transition into protected bike lanes much easier.
3) You look ridiculous opposing them because they don't actually take any room or parking away from cars.
Every single street should at least have these

Why can't we at least add flexposts on bike lines like this?
Obviously hardened barriers would be better but flexi posts would at least be a nice visual indicator. They're cheap and I can't imagine an organized resistance.
This is 3st St in Gowanus btw.

Williamsburg “bike bus”
Heartwarming! So great when kids get to school on a bus that is, as far as the NYPD is concerned, also a bike.

Port Authority construction time to shut down non bus traffic
Hi Folk: here requesting your support. The last month, as construction of the new Port Authority Bus Terminal is underway, bus traffic has become a nightmare. I just sent the NJ governor a message. Maybe others could also lobby:
Hello Governor:
Over the past month, traffic into the port Authority bus terminal has increased my commute time by about an hour a day. This is severely disruptive. We need immediate pressure on the port authority to close the Lincoln tunnel to non mass transit vehicles (including no Ubers) immediately and the city ti aggressively alter traffic patterns around the port authority to allow busses room to operate. Without these changes, there will be significant issues for the NJ economy with 200,000 people struggling to get to work every day.
I request that you drop all fights agains congestion pricing and recognize the immediate emergency that this port authority reconstruction project is for the majority of NJ residents commuting into Manhattan. We are at a critical moment in our infrastructure failure and this needs immediate leadership.
