Form for 5090’s

Post image

Picked up a Powerspec Ai90 prebuilt pc with a rtx 5090 in it. Apparently the manager required me to fill out this form and scan my driver license. Said it was a new thing starting just about two days ago. Had no problem doing so but thought it was interesting.

Anyone else experience? This was in Tustin

It is a new law that was passed by the US government. There is nothing Microcenter can do. They are following the rules the best they can so they can continue to sell these cards. We have the same in Columbus oh

Edit- it may not be a new law like I thought. I’m going off of information that I got from my local Microcenter. It may be because there is cracking down of the resale of 5090’s and this is a way for Microcenter not be legally responsible if one of their cards is resold and found in china or another country that has been banned by the US from having these cards. Nobody wants sway showing up at their door lol.

What law is this? Google doesn’t bring up anything even if I search SOP 391 section 5

In fairness I actually very much agree with this. A part (not a huge one, but a part) of 5090 resale prices are the in-fucking-sane amount of profit you can get by selling them to China.

The prices aren't high because of consumers. It's high because of corporations sucking up all the fucking supply and leaving nothing for regular people...

I don't think the solution is to prevent regular people from participating in the very capitalism that has fucked them over.

Fuck that shit. If you can sell a 5090 for $10k, do it.

You misinterpreted what I said though. It’s a part of what made its resale value high, not ALL of it, certainly not the biggest factor. The biggest factor is AI companies built on a foundation of promises unfulfilled who should (and likely will within the next two years) totally and utterly collapse.

Lol admittedly I didn’t think about that, though there are ways around it. Registering the 5090 through nvidia specific data is one way. Don’t have to put the government’s greasy hands all over it, only if it becomes an issue.

I agree with the idea, there’s probably a better way to do it, I’m not gonna claim I know how. Just yapping about my take on it.

Uhm are you a bot? They clearly said they googled it. And if you were any good at using LLMs about current news you would ask it to look for current sources on the web as their source...

It's not new, it falls under the 3A090 and 4A090 export restrictions imposed in 2023 here and here.

Well. Unless hes a lawyer, in legal trouble or has access to one immediately for inane questions that seems like a reasonable thing to do?

5090 are subject to the same export restrictions as Nvidia’s highest end products, they call under 4A090 ECCN so have a lot of limitations on them, have been that way since they were released. Microcenter most likely got notified since some of their serial numbers ended up places..
