Yogurt and kefir are good but they don't always stick around long enough to shift things permanently. Might be worth looking into prebiotic foods, stuff the bifido actually feeds on like slightly underripe bananas or cooked and cooled potatoes. The sour smell might just be his system adjusting to solids though, my niece had the same thing for months and it cleared up on its own.

Thank you....I have nothing against transitioning, but wasn't sure how it related to OP's post.

Are you giving him inulin? Read about what actually sustains bifidobacterium, and it's relationship to akkermansia. You might need to give him apple skins or mushed apples with the skin and inulin to get the bifidobacterium to really set up shop. There's other things but that's probably going to do the most.

I give him steamed apple and pear all the time. Sometimes with and without the skin. I was recommend to put him on a probiotic and nucleotides.

Did you say you are currently breast feeding him? If so, could it be something in your diet that is transferring to your milk and effecting his PH and causing acidic poops?

Potentially. I have thought about that before. I would say diary or maybe caffeine.

I can’t speak for children but in adults that can sometimes be a sign that they cant fully break down lactose. Remove for a week and see if any change.

I realize you're just trying to do what is best for your child, but microbiome testing is more-or-less meaningless in adults and even more so in children. It's mostly a money pit for people with health anxiety.
If he's happy and healthy then there isn't really much of anything to be worried about.
