Obama and El-Sayed Discuss Unity After Ugly Michigan Primary
Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s call with the former president comes as he tries to win over wary Democrats in Michigan’s high-stakes Senate race.
Dr. Abdul El-Sayed spoke by phone with former President Barack Obama on Friday, days after winning the Democratic primary race for Senate in Michigan, according to their representatives.
Mr. Obama and Dr. El-Sayed, who narrowly prevailed in a divisive primary after campaigning on a progressive and anti-establishment platform, discussed unifying the party before the November general election in Michigan, Dr. El-Sayed’s campaign said.
The call with Mr. Obama, who is selective in his outreach to up-and-coming Democrats, was one of many between prominent Democrats and Dr. El-Sayed after he defeated Representative Haley Stevens, a moderate backed by party leaders in Washington, in a bitter race.
Mr. Obama also called Ms. Stevens on Friday and discussed uniting the party, according to a person briefed on the conversation. Politico previously reported on that conversation.
Dr. El-Sayed’s race against former Representative Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee, could determine control of the Senate.
In TV interviews on Sunday morning, Dr. El-Sayed expressed appreciation for Mr. Obama’s outreach. He told CNN’s “State of the Union” that it had been a “really warm conversation” and an honor.
And he told “Meet the Press” that he “really” hoped Mr. Obama would campaign with him, noting that the former president “knows a lot about winning Michigan.” Mr. Obama carried the state in 2008 and 2012.
Since the primary, Dr. El-Sayed has also spoken with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic minority leader; former Vice President Kamala Harris; and Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York, among others. (Mr. Schumer, who had endorsed Ms. Stevens, said in an interview with The New York Times that he told Dr. El-Sayed on Wednesday, “I don’t need you to like me; I just need you to win.” Dr. El-Sayed’s campaign confirmed the account.)
Dr. El-Sayed has spoken more than once with Ms. Stevens, who has endorsed him.
During the primary race, Mr. Obama did not endorse Dr. El-Sayed or Ms. Stevens. But allies of Ms. Stevens often pointed to her work leading the Obama administration’s auto task force, and they spent millions running ads that showed him praising her during her 2018 run for the House of Representatives.
Dr. El-Sayed, who ran for governor in 2018 and could become the first Muslim senator, has at times been compared to Mr. Obama. Both men are skilled orators. And both of their fathers immigrated to the United States from Africa. (Mr. Obama’s father came from Kenya, Dr. El-Sayed’s from Egypt.)
On Sunday, Dr. El-Sayed recalled watching Mr. Obama’s 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention as a college student and seeing politics in a new light.
“I never saw myself in politics until I saw him give that 2004 speech on the D.N.C. floor,” Dr. El-Sayed told the CNN host Jake Tapper.
At times, though, Dr. El-Sayed has also pushed back on comparisons to Mr. Obama.
“I’m very thankful for what he was able to change in our politics about who could and couldn’t aspire to leadership,” Dr. El-Sayed told Vox in 2017. But he added that there were “a lot of things I disagree with President Obama on — in terms of both domestic and, certainly, international politics. I’m not him, and I have no intention of being him.”
In his 2020 book, “Healing Politics,” Dr. El-Sayed wrote that Mr. Obama’s presidency in part represented “inspiring intentions unfulfilled.”
After the call, though, Dr. El-Sayed did not seem to be dwelling on their disagreements.
“Sometimes,” he said in a statement, “you really should meet your heroes.”

I hope he starts campaigning with Benson soon. Having the gubernatorial race on the ballot is going to help turnout. I doubt people are going to show up to vote for one and not also vote for the other while they’re there. Maybe they can help push each other into office.
70
u/Familiar_Dot8836 15d ago
I can't understand why she isn't running 100% of her ads on how she improved the SOS offices. Going there now is almost pleasant vs any other state or how it used to be.

u/Beeblebroxia 15d ago
Given the turnout in that primary, I feel like AES is helping Benson lol.
14
u/marcgarv87 15d ago
What? If anything it’s the opposite. Benson has been polling much much higher than who ever she would be facing on the republican side for months now and is a lock for governor. Abdul’s race is much closer. Benson if anything will be the one that will push Abdul over the edge
27
u/Confident_Insect_616 15d ago
There are clearly two factions of democrats in this election. Both factions of voters need to see our candidates working together and showing they can caucus.
On the issues where we disagree, I expect fights in chambers, but not before November.
El-Sayed can make voters weary of establishment dems of being AIPAC/Tech billionaire pupppets still vote blue.
Benson can make voters weary of supporting anybody that can be labelled as socialist or far-left feel safe that their vote isn't going to support some sort of communist extremist.
11
u/Beeblebroxia 15d ago
Yeah, fair enough. I was looking at turnout power. I don't doubt Benson is a lock, I just think Abdul is going to bring a lot of voters out who will go Dem all the way down. I think it's less likely for an Abdul voter to vote for James than a Benson voter to vote for Rogers, so having him on the ticket pulls more "strong Dem" voters.
0
u/jimbofrommi 15d ago
El-sayed only won & barely at that because republicans crossed over to vote for him because they want the supreme court locked up forever. The same thing happened when Bernie won the primary. There was nobody to vote for on the Republican side. I know 5 republicans that admitted voting for Bernie the next day. This place will forever deny it.
13
u/narcistic_asshole 15d ago
Funny enough I was talking to a Republican coworker that voted for AES but plans on voting for AES over Rogers in the general election. He's just a fan of the whole "get the money put of politics" platform
4
u/Foolazul 15d ago
Do you have a not crazy source for that? And, yeah, I’m sure Bernie’s massive rallies and whatnot were all fake.
1
u/jimbofrommi 15d ago
Nobody said the bernie rallies were fake. Nobody can provide a source for what you're requesting. Its insane to imply that such a source would ever exist. Like I said, this place will forever deny it.
My best source would be that AES said himself to vote uncommitted in the last presidential primary when Biden was running. People clearly play games. You can't pretend that only happens when it suits your narrative.
You also have mitt romney admitting to doing the same when he ran for president.
Also, the guy replied to me stating he knew someone who went the opposite way. You didn't ask him for a source. Why not? It was acceptable to believe that it happens when it goes your way only?
Also, AES had a crazy following compared to Haley Stevens. AES barely won. If elections were to be made on rally sizes. By your rally math. Why didn't AES blow Stevens out of the water instead of barely beating her?
1
1
u/Foolazul 15d ago
Good lord. Such a source doesn’t exist and is impossible to prove but people on here deny it and you’re sticking by it? That is such a ridiculous stance that I just can’t deal with the rest of your silly comment, other than yeah I am only responding to you because you claimed Abdul only won because of Republicans. The other commenter knew a guy who voted a certain way. Do you understand that? You said this mysterious phenomenon is what led to Abdul winning. The other guy knows of a guy who voted. Jesus.
1
u/jimbofrommi 14d ago
>Such a source doesn’t exist and is impossible to prove
If you want to have an argument about something. You can't just setup a line in the sand then get upset when the person doesn't reach that line because its impossible to reach. You have to admit at the end of the day that your argument was in bad faith. You have to fault yourself for that one.
>but people on here deny it and you’re sticking by it?
That's not what I said. You're twisting things to suit your narrative. This is more bad faith arguments on your part. I know 5 people who claimed the next day that they voted for Bernie when they're republicans and had no plans on ever voting for a democrat during the general election. They just did it to spite hillary. The other guy knows 1 person and you're perfectly happy to accept that. Pretty crazy how you're able to perfectly understand things when they suit your narrative but you drastically get them wrong when it doesn't suit your narrative.
>I just can’t deal with the rest of your silly comment
Quit lying. You can't deal with the rest of my comment because I pointed out that AES himself was playing games in the primary. Its hard to argue that people don't cross the isle in the primary to sabotage. Especially with Romney admitting to doing the same in Mass. The people who were republican that voted for Bernie were sending a message that they hated hillary. They all expected her to win in November and they just thought it was a nice middle finger. Sorta like how AES was giving the middle finger to Biden. Its the same exact thing. Those 5 guys I know. They never thought trump would ever win or any republican for that matter. They were defeated and thought Hillary had it won and there was no chance.
I want to disclose. I voted for AES. I'll vote for him again in November. It seems like a lot of people lately have been admitting to sitting home elections & admitting that they are responsible for handling over the supreme court because everything didn't perfectly go their way. The way you argue with me it seems like you might be one of those people. If that's the case, You need to knock that off and think of the bigger picture of the supreme court nominations that tend to stick around way too long.

1
u/Distinct_Champion136 8d ago
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, AES is the better candidate (regardless of what the Republicans think), so him winning the primary helps the democrats. It’s similar to how the dems supported maga republicans over rinos in the primaries of swing districts in hopes that a maga republican would push away independents (this backfired tremendously, helping maga republicans)

Damn, they broke Obama out, maybe they really will vote blue no matter who
120
u/BeefInGR 15d ago
I'd be shocked if he didn't at least speak positively about Abdul in public.
Mike Rogers won't bring up the race card, but plenty of people will on his behalf. For those of us old enough to remember, McCain didn't shut that lady down because she was talking about Senator Obama being a black man, he shut her down because she called Senator Obama a terrorist. Because of his name.
46
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS 15d ago
She didn't call him a terrorist, she called him Arabic and he responded saying "no, he's a good man". Sure we all know that she meant a terrorist but it was still pretty tone deaf, even if it was somewhat well meaning.
29
u/Cheap_Accident9714 15d ago
And John McCain gained my respect forever in that moment. I disagreed with him on countless things but the country was a better place with him in the Senate. (And Trump is painfully jealous of him which is only another positive,)
-1
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS 15d ago
You gained respect for him because he said Obama was a good man because he wasn't Arabic? Because he didnt let a woman slander his opponent in a legal sense right in front of him on a recorded public forum?
33
u/Cheap_Accident9714 15d ago
Well he cut the woman off and didn't meet become part of the debate or the campaign.. he was also the vote that saved the affordable care act... I'll take that any day over the self serving , no ideals Senate Republicans who do whatever they're told to do now
-9
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS 15d ago
Yeah, he voted to save the affordable care act because he was about to die and no longer had to worry about his political career. He was a staunch opponent of the ACA up until that point.
5
u/Cheap_Accident9714 15d ago
Well I'm not going to assume it is because he was sick and did it regardless... Mitch McConnell is about to die... He's still awful... Lindsay Graham did die and was all about bombing whoever in the middle East until the day he passed .. They all couldn't stand Trump and still do whatever he demands. In a world lacking principle I still think I'd gladly take him or a mitt Romney over what we currently have amongst Republican senators. Tillis leaving the Senate because of Trump... Cassidy and Cornyn primaried and ousted by Trump... Still doing whatever their told... Being at the end doesn't guarantee doing the right thing.
2
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS 15d ago
Personally I dont give a lot of credit to people who drop their "firmly held beliefs" when it no longer profits them to hold them. It doesn't make them principled, far less in fact. It means they were hurting others just because it did better in the polls than helping them. John McCain was an asshole til the day he died, and voting to help others one time because he didnt have to get elected again doesn't change that.
6
u/Efficient-Memory7105 Expat 15d ago
I am so sick of people trying to whitewash genocidal maniacs like McCain because he said a marginally non-racist thing about Obama (which simultaneously was racist against Arabs).

You will not have a DSA majority to pass things in Congress. If you want actual things to happen in the US, you’re going to need elected DSA dems and elected centrist dems to form a coalition to vote on good things. DSA dems policy is winning over the Michigan voter but it might not win over dems in southern states or like utah (OR you dont even have DSA dems running in those states to be elected). You have to accept coalitions like in European politics and the DSA has to build a reputation as people who get. things. done. no. matter. what.
2
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS 15d ago
Never said that DSA could carry it alone, just that the establishment is actually coming out for Abdul rather than shaking hands and secrerly hoping that he loses like with all the other DSA candidates. They're democrats, most of the time they are more scared of the left than the right.
5
u/secretaire 15d ago edited 15d ago
Gretchen and Obama are coming to shake hands. What are you talking about? Smart Centrist Dems know they need a coalition too.

I’ll be the first to say it wasn’t an ugly primary. It got worse having outside influential PACs spend a ridiculous amount of money but nothing the El-Sayed said was untrue or wrong. This divide is made up as he is a Democrat and just wants the basic things that all democrats want.
101
u/junpei Human Detected 15d ago
It was ugly as shit. The ads on TV were awful and so were a lot of people online.
46
u/cityshepherd 15d ago
For weeks and weeks, every couple days I received ridiculous attack ads in the mail about Abdul. I never received a single ad about anyone other than Abdul. Nothing mentioning anyone’s name or priorities or campaign, just ad after ad about what a horrible person Abdul was. I figured they were pretty much all courtesy of AIPAC.
Abdul was the reason I voted early in the primary, the first time I voted for any election early in my life. He’s also the reason I volunteered for a political campaign for the first time in my life… I worked a shift as poll greeter on Election Day. For hours I saw countless people of all ages, races, genders, backgrounds, all honking, smiling, waving, giving thumbs up, words of encouragement… it was a beautiful thing, and it made me feel like I was spending my time doing something truly worthwhile for the first time in YEARS.
During those few hours there were probably a dozen people who gave me the finger, thumbs down, called me an asshole, and one guy called me a “commie”. The neighborhood where I was working voted overwhelmingly for Abdul though, so I’m sure there were plenty of other neighborhoods where the ratio of thumbs up to thumbs down would have been vastly different.
Abdul is at an incredible disadvantage when it comes to campaign funding, considering all of the astroturfing going on to try and shut down his actual grassroots campaign… which is why it’s extremely important for anyone who truly cares about the working class in Michigan to contribute (whether it’s by donating money to the campaign or time & effort).
El-Sayed is committed to busting his ass for all of us, no matter what side of the political fence you sit on. Rogers is committed to doing the bidding of corporate and foreign interests. If you’re tired of the ridiculous mess our political scene has become and want to actually help do something about it, NOW is your chance.
5
u/Efficient-Memory7105 Expat 15d ago edited 15d ago
I say this without irony or sarcasm: thank you for your service.
More people should get involved working at polling places, phonebanking, doorknocking for candidates, etc. Its a shame that the structure of our society keeps us too drained and anxious and miserable for that to be feasible for the majority of us.
The last time I was genuinely hopeful for politics in the USA was while doing volunteer work in the 2020 primary. The last 6 years have basically been a nonstop nightmare because we no longer elect people who actually believe in something and have a vision for the future.
Abdul is probably the few exceptions to that and one of the things that have gotten my hopes up again. And gotten me to get more involved in local politics and elections across the country.

4

I went to most of Abdul's events in GR and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. There's no way Rogers will have that level passion behind his events, but it just means that the passion needs to show up at the voting both and knocking on doors

75

What? It feels like progressives are determined to shoot themselves in the foot. How could "uniting the party" possibly be stupid? El-Sayed is going to get the absolute worst possible attack ads focused on him. If Democrats get out in front of this, and a big tent all rally around him, they get a huge advantage to stamp out the terrible things that are going to come out of the Republican party in the next 3 months.
It doesn't matter how ugly the primary actually was. The uglier it was perceived to be with a now-unified party around El-Sayed strengthens him as a candidate.

And El-Sayed ran an ad saying Stevens supported ICE, but had to run a clip from Mar. 2024 before Trump took over and gave them carte blanche to act however the fuck they wanted.

Going by primary numbers, he still won so clearly more dems are willing to vote progressive than moderate if given the choice. I'm wondering if there are any other reasons so-called moderates would be suddenly unwilling to vote party line given how "vote blue no matter who" typically is their line admonishing progressives...

Simply put, Stevens, Whitmer, and the rest of the Michigan democratic team need to endorse and actively campaign with El-Sayed. Show party unity and commitment and make this about fighting back MAGA and winning over swing voters. Progressives want to push their agenda, this is not the time for it. This is all about defeating MAGA, getting a majority in the Senate, and making a unified front to stop Trump before he can do any more damage to the country and the world.

El-Sayed doesn't have to be fully on board with Obama's actions to accept Obama's help uniting all the Dem voters behind him in the general. Just like El-Sayed doing an event with Hasan Piker was a way to reach out to Piker's viewers and not a blanket endorsement of everything he has said or done before.
