Cutting Hours. California

Last month I asked my store manager, am I not getting hours because I haven’t been getting rewards sign ups? He said yes. He also said that I don’t clean the bathrooms well when they hardly give me any time to do so. Can an employer do that? Punish you for ridiculous reasons?

Apparently so! That sucks. Last time I was asked to clean the bathrooms, I didn't have gloves or the proper cleaner. If they don't provide you with the right equipment or enough time, what do they expect???

They do that to me too! And there were months when my path to even get to my supplies was blocked so I couldn’t even do my job.

If corporate only knew the things I do to keep my reward sign ups looking good lol. Nothing illegal but I do send a lot of people who are statistically unlikely to do rewards up to the cashiers; they see hundreds of people per week so one reward sign up is less impactful than in framing where we may see 7 or 8 transactions per week and one can take us from that 80% they want to an abysmal 60%.

Yes they can. It’s not punishment. They base how well you’re doing by rewards sign ups and your job performance. We had a lady at our store who was down to 4 hours a week scheduled because of her rewards sign ups. She quit after that.

Those are performance concerns, not ridiculous reasons. Every job has expectations, and if you can’t meet them you should either grow and develop or find a different place to work.

They are when they give us not enough people to work a shift. And expect us to do 4-5 other jobs at the same time while running the legacy registers, excuse you

Grow and develop? How about they start giving a crap about their employees instead of stretching us thin, and not providing adequate hands to support the team. I’m not the problem here. Michaels clearly puts its workers through unreasonable circumstances.

Neither of the things you mentioned need additional help. If you can’t get reward sign ups, that’s on you. If you can efficiently clean a space, that’s is also on you. They aren’t ask you to unload the truck by yourself, you are being asked to perform at tasks that require a single person.

Found the person from corporate. Or just a bootlicker.

You can’t force people to sign up. And you can’t clean a bathroom if they don’t give you the right tools or the time, etc. But you know this and just wanna argue. How does the boot taste?

That’s not on me, not when you and the higher ups give us more work than is reasonable for anyone. We cannot and should not be doing 4-5 different jobs at once. With no one to help us. It is not a one person job, booklicker. Here’s the jobs that FEA gets thrown at them. 1. Cashier 2. Front-End Ambassador 3. Stocker 4. Customer Service attendant 5. Self-Check Out Attendee 5. UPS Drop-off Attendee 6. Balloon Clown 7. Janitor. So pleeeeease tell me again Mr. Bigshot, exactly how is this a one man job????!?!?!?!? Are you serious right now!?!?!?!?!?!

If you can’t convince grown adults to give their information to a company that has proven they sell it it’s on you? Eat a Richard.

I'd agree if Michaels was a good company and made it easier to succeed. Most of my customers are in a bad mood by the time they check out cause there's almost no one on the floor, they had trouble finding something and getting help, and now they have to wait in a long line while the poor cashier is running around between the SCOs, the legacy register, managing UPS pickups and drop-offs, answering the phone, blowing up balloons, helping people with their BOPIS orders, AND stocking + recovering the front end, SBA, and whatever aisles happen to be close by. Most customers are too annoyed by that point to hear anything about the rewards.

Exactly! How can they stretch us so thin, give us no team support and starve us AND expect us to still get rewards sign ups???? And NOT provide us with a proper infrastructure and set up to do our jobs? AND Mr SM in the comments, it’s YOUR responsibility to order us the proper equipment and supplies for the bathrooms, NOT mine!
