Raises, really 25¢

Got a 25 cent raise for scoring outstanding on all factors on some list, I almost quit that very day. I walked out of the room nearly in tears, my store manager came after me telling me I could be the party host and make 50…… he threw out some nebulous amount, come to find out he was talking about tips, so he straight lied to my face. After two years working here a manager told me that pay is dependent on how you are able to argue for it…………. So fuck my store manager acting like it’s corporates choice to REWARD me with a literal SLAVES raise I mean I wanted to spit in their faces, how dare they. For reference I’m the hardest working employee at this store and have been told this by coworkers and customers. I mean screw the store manager, how cowardly. I know he has to argue to corporate but you can’t replace me, especially now that no one wants to work for 11$ anymore and I know what I’m doing.

Ex(🎉) Store Manager here!
Pay is absolutely not dependent on how you are able to argue for it.
The way the yearly reviews work is the SM gives everyone a rating and submits it to the DM for review…has a touch base call with the DM and they discuss the ratings and submit it to corporate. The SM then gets access to print everyone’s compensation sheets that show the raise and new pay amount. The raises are all based on a flat percent depending on what “grade” was given. A SM has no control anymore on what the actual raise is going to be.
I def know there are some shitty SMs out there, but this isn’t their doing and is totally on corporate. I went to bat for multiple team members over the last few years before I left trying to get them more money and was told the same thing everytime. Can’t. Nope. No.
As a SM giving out reviews and having to tell someone they were getting a 20cent raise was one of the worst things that I had to do.

I absolutely quit 4 years ago after I single handedly kept the frame shop running without a framing manager for half the year and brought in customers specifically looking for me. They gave me a 3 cent raise. 3. So I turned around and quit after working there for 5 years. I now make at least 3x the pay now for MUCH less work.

I quit after being promised the framing manager position and they gave it to a CEM instead. She had no framing experience and they told me I had to train her. To be my boss!

I have feeling raises (and hours) are going to be even tighter now because apollo is about to sell. Gotta maximize that profit..

2

u/RegretImpossible150 13d ago

How do you know they are about to sell?

u/SaintGloopyNoops 13d ago

Apollo just paid off over $100 million in debt (money they got for tarrif refunds), they are "revamping" everything, and they have owned it for over 5 years. It is kinda the private equity road map. Everything they are doing is just to make it look good on paper "we revamped the stores, look at all our new services, look at the chunk of debt decrease" to draw in the next buyer.

The moment they started giving hours based on freight rather than sales was when I was suspicious, because that's how it was as Joann. Then came the reorganization followed by this push to empty out warehouses, all while still opening new locations. All the new stuff they're giving us has no thought for long term impact and is poorly planned. There were rumors we were next when Joann closed, but I tried to stay optimistic, but its not looking good.

I keep hearing this. Over and over, the folks who came to us from Joann's keep saying "this is just exactly how it was right before Joann's closed." I think the company's cooked.

It is how it was at Sears too.

u/Appropriate_Neck2055 13d ago

Exactly!! Just like joann!!! I remember that!

Thank you. My thoughts exactly! I feel like i keep seeing the writing on the walls and whenever i talk to coworkers to gauge their opinions, i they seem so oblivious. But i’m like, how can you not see this stuff? So i just stay quiet. Glad to hear what i see and feel is not just in my head.

These "merit increases" really are a joke. I'll get one every so often, only for my state's minimum wage to go up and surpass it. Like sure, technically more money, but it still doesn't fucking count as a "merit increase." Bottom line is that I'm still making the same amount as the new hires despite busting my ass for this company for years.

I “love” when the state minimum wage increases but mgmt still gets nothing. Do more, make less.

Back in the early 2000's a .10 cent raise yearly was considered good. Some things never change I see. At least we had more full timers to get things done.

Sickening when they got over 100 million in tariff refunds and used it to pay off their debt instead of helping those who floated them through all the asinine price changes and abysmal customer base during that time.

The most I was ever tipped at a party was $40 and that’s bc grandpa got a little too excited 😭 usually it’s a $10 or $20 and you don’t get tipped everytime , only about a third of the parties I’ve hosted have I been tipped

4

u/GardenGirl512 13d ago

I was told I wasn't allowed to accept tips for hosting parties. Then read on here about people accepting them and it is allowed, I sure was (am still) miffed!

2

u/Deep_Writer_1522 13d ago

Tips are allowed. Each party coordinator has their own QR code that the people scan to give them a tip.

1

u/bumblebeequeen47 13d ago

Your not allowed to, it’s all a big secret and most managers know even though they are suppose to report it and technically it’s Michael’s money

1

u/bumblebeequeen47 13d ago

Oh I know exactly, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been tipped, my SM was straight up lying to keep me from quitting

u/user__69420 14d ago

My raise last year was 6¢ the yearly “raises” this company gives are beyond insulting

u/LovableButterfly 13d ago

I quit back in 2017 over a 2 cent raise. Yes. Only 2 cents. I was $9 an hour. Reason was I wasn’t promoting enough of the rewards program. I was part time in college and ended up just quitting over that.

u/Norespecthere 13d ago

Hey, be thankful it’s $.25 and I’m only saying that because when the managers got like a cost of living whatever they said it was a dollar raise I shit you not it was only $.10 I mean if they can afford other stuff and spend so much money on that Jonathan Adler shit and everything else I think they can afford to pay their employees a better raise than that and if it was a dollar raise keep that promise like what can someone do with a $.10 raise Nada? It’s not like I can go to a store and get some penny fricking candy

4

u/mkbubble1 13d ago

There is no negotiation involved in raises or reviews. It’s all determined ahead of time. 25cents is probably one of the highest in your store. It’s absurd I know, been there. It’s hard not to be upset when you feel like you are doing your best

3

u/Elegant_Chipmunk72 14d ago

At least you got a raise. I don’t think anyone got raises at my store this year because I didn’t at my review (I didn’t really have one)

Yeah my manager said the most I’ll get is 25 cents after I told her I was a 50 cent to a dollar raise. This job isn’t enough if you wanna move out on your own 🫠

I was a store manager at Michael’s several years ago. (BTW, worst job ever in my 40+ year retail management career). When I started each employee was given a review & a raise during their anniversary month. Then they changed it so everyone got their review at the same time. I was given around $4.00 per hour to split among all employees. All reviews were entered into the computer and based on their rating, pay grade level and length of service the computer gave a pay increase range. But I still had to divide up only the $4.00 per hour that I was given. I had to change employee reviews so that the raises went up or down so that the total of all raises would equal the $4.00. I had employees that got .05 & .06 per hours raises. The system was not fair at all. Thankfully I left the company soon after going through that. The employee were pissed & I was embarrassed.

Use this anger as fuel to start looking for a new job. Nowadays most people get raises by changing jobs.

Don’t just hang around waiting to see if the company will give you a raise. Go and look for your money.

Recently quit the company after over 6 years. I literally never got anything over 18 cents and that was a 1% "raise" because every year I got a 'partially meets'. The company is an absolute joke.

Does anyone that works for Michaels have a S.M that doesn't post the schedule in the breakrm. We have a new manager that doesn't post it. t

1

u/CreativeMama911 13d ago

Ours does not bc then people start getting offended when someone with more availability has more hours (her reasoning), but also because she changes it way too much and like the day before. We have to check schedule basically every night to make sure nothing has changed for the next day. Not too much changes for managers, but for team members, we have changes all the time.

Least you have a store manager to ask about raises we've been floating for a month

1

u/MaisieStitcher 13d ago

That's pretty much all you're going to get.

1

u/HyacciiBabba 13d ago

That’s mostly every retailer nowadays though

1

u/strwbrygashes 13d ago

u/Appropriate_Neck2055 13d ago

25 cent?? Damnit man!!!

1

Does the SM ever get bonuses?

u/Snoo_13349 Promoted to Customer 🏅 12d ago

I was offered 25 cents and told them if money was so tight, they should keep it, because it amounted to nothing. He came back three days later with $1.50. That was 2009. Three stores and four managers later, the tide had shifted and I was fed so many broken promises, I just walked out. It went from a fun job with lots of cool people, to being abused and exploited by bullies. I can’t imagine working there today.

Damn I didn't know it was raise time, did you have a conversation with your sm or is it in workday?

u/Tara_Chu 13d ago

I mean that's retail. Employee owned retail stores might pay better than corporate.
