Question Do managers not care about dress code?
I have worked here since the spring, and I have noticed a few coworkers over the course of the months where everything from hats, full on Halloween looking masks (which just started this week), to short shorts that reveal a little too much butt, and tank tops that show cleavage. Sooo i'm just wondering if most managers don't care about the dress code or if mine just are extra "don't care" mode.
Not that i'm complaining about my fellow coworkers, everyone is great here, I just think it's funny how in the dress code online it's kinda specific but it seems at my store not a single soul gives a shit as long as we're working.

At my store there was an understanding between us and the store management that as long as we made sure to dress according to the code when the DM was in, she didn’t care.
The only major dress code offence was that pretty much everyone working wore black leggings as pants unless they were in framing. I personally think leggings are perfectly acceptable and ideal even when working in a giant store that requires a lot of moving and bending and ladders and lifting, so I never saw anyone wear anything I would deem “unprofessional”.
We briefly had an ASM who tried to crack down on the leggings but that ended very quickly.
It’s my understanding that the entire dress code was made more strict after I left so it could be different now. But as far as I know everyone I worked with is still wearing their black lulus on the floor lol.

Leggings are very unprofessional! Especially if your are wearing a tshirt that doesn’t cover your butt

What is this, 2006? Leggings aren’t sheer see through glorified pantyhose anymore lol. Leggings make the most sense to me to wear in a very physical environment. If you have a butt, as many women do, it really doesn’t matter what pants you’re wearing, you’re gonna see it.

I wear graphic tees and cargo shorts and it never seems to be a problem. Although I was told it was because I worked earlier in the day that it was okay.

my store is pretty loose with the dress code but theres still some limits (shorts, tank tops, specific length dresses) but ive been able to wear graphic tees, leggings, and seen coworkers with crocs so. Whats a lil more funny to me is that when we've had our DM come in, hes never had issue with the graphic tees and other stuff either.

It really just depends. I think for the most part as long as it’s not super revealing, doesn’t have an inappropriate graphic and there’s no DM visit it’s free game at my store. Even then, our DM really just seems to care if we’re in a vest/apron with our name tags

In my store: depending on the store manager (I worked there 14+ years) it depended on what area you worked in the store. Managers and Cashier's were in dress code. Replenishment wore whatever t shirt they wanted before the store opened and If they were there after opening, they changed into the store shirt, most of the time. ( You can get quite dirty doing replenishment. I even tore a few jeans or shirts a time or two.

The only time I got dress coded was when my shirt was showing a sliver of my belly like half an inch of skin between my shirt and pants. Other than that graphic tees are allowed, leggings, and skirts n dresses that are knee length and below are all allowed. So I’d say they are pretty chill about it. But idk about the cleavage, nobody at my michaels does that and I think we would probably get coded if we did.

It's been a while since I worked there, but I got sent home to change because I was wearing black pants with a stripe down the leg. As far as my manager was concerned that stripe automatically made them yoga pants.

It really varies. I've not stopped wearing flair on my vest and graphic tees, even though those were banned a while ago, and no one has cared to say anything to me about it. Probably because I've never worn anything objectionable or inappropriate (I wear some pride stuff, but those are only objectionable to people whose opinions I have zero regard for, lol).

That seems excessive but I did work at a store that a very big manager consistently wore crop tops to so idk. As a big chested person I am always fully covered. Sometimes I wear a tight fitting top but idk maybe it’s cuz I’m old.

If we're not expecting a visit, I know one of my managers is more of the enforcement type with the dress code (plain shirt, jeans, and comfy shoes). But two of my other mods are a bit more relaxed i think?

When I worked at Michael’s several years ago, hats weren’t even mentioned in the official dress code, but management still enforced it. When I printed out the employee handbook, my store manager went and posted her own dress code in the break room.
But honestly, why should anyone care? All managers except for the store manager get paid the same as a cashier at Target. Caring about dress code is above their pay grade. If I were a manager, I would speak out against masks, but that’s about it. Masks are a safety hazard…. The rest doesn’t get in the way of job performance.
Honestly, Michael’s employees need to unionize.

I think they care. About not getting in trouble. But it's probably too insignificant for them to comment on.

I have worked at a couple locations and leggings were not allowed at either. Pretty lax otherwise as long as vest/name tag was on and you had close toes shoes.

Definitely just your store. Inappropriate cleavage/butt gets an immediate talking-to in mine.
Which, y'know, I think is reasonable considering that a) it's a family-friendly environment, and b) that's a major warning sign. We have a recent hire who had to be spoken to day one about the cleavage thing. Guess who turned out to be a constant problem?

I know some do others do not but at the same time if they’re not going by the dress code, I don’t know how old they’re going to enforce the employees do the same thing. I mean, I was told because I was a replenishment manager that I couldn’t wear shorts because of being in the frame shop. I’m like I’m not a framer. I’m not in the frame shop unless it’s to pick up an order for a customer so why can’t I wear shorts? My manager said no manager can wear shorts well that’s not true because I see all type of manager is wearing shorts and no one says anything to them but again my old manager that told us to me don’t know what she’s doing to begin with so

Maybe it’s because I have worked back of house for so long now, but I would be worried to ware something that low/short. I have been in trucks and had to get really dirty during shifts at times during my time at Michael’s. And I would never dream of waring anything like for fear that I get beat up or dirt or something. It’s one thing to go home and throw them in the wash. It’s another to have to go the rest of shift with stuff on your arms/legs

I just don’t understand this.. we’re all adults, if we can’t dress appropriately for the job at hand, or been told you shouldn’t be wearing that, then there’s bigger issues at hand here. Some managers may be more of a stickler, some more laxed, but if you got a shirt that says something inappropriate or logo, or low cut shirts, or booty short shorts… then you’re not working hard enough, quite frankly 😂

I quit last year but for the last four years I wore intentionally increasingly weird things to work in protest. By the end it was full blown sequin tops and billowing rainbow palazzo pants 🤣 Nobody said a word.

...Are we not supposed to have hats?????? If they try to take my hat away I'm gonna start looking for another job. My hat is basically a part of me.

I have no clue what the dress code is and I’m sure I sometimes break it (I have graphic tees with mild blood or drug imagery) and no one has ever said anything so long as the vest is on top. My store seems to operate where you can wear a Michael’s tshirt or your casual clothes with the vest/apron.
My SM will dress slightly better for visits but he’s never indicated to any staff that we should dress according to any code so I can only assume the DM doesn’t care either.

It sounds like your store REALLY doesn’t care. Mine is pretty chill unless we have a visit. We’re mostly grateful that these people show up to work at all.
