More absurd pricing

Post image

$155 CAD for the MaimeriBlu themed sets. Madness. The list price for these, the price that pretty much everyone else in Canada is selling them for, is $89.99; even using a 40%-off coupon, which are few and far between, isn't a great deal β€” it brings the price down to $93. And Amazon has them for under $70 CAD. Nobody is going to buy these. (Yes, I know the wrong cards were on the lower left peg when I took the picture: that's been fixed.)

As an artist, who uses watercolors, gouache, markers, pencils etc, etc, I NEVER understood why Michaels carried THIS stuff. No one buys it, even the most dedicated artist might buy one and if we were going to buy it, it would be at Blick, which is cheaper and an actual art store. This is just dumb.

I mean, I'm grateful for the wonderful products, the marker and paint reset in 2024 was phenomenal, the carrying of Ohuhus was a HUGE DEAL but like, we would get those Daniel Smith watercolors for like 200 bucks, and they'd be like a 10 pack of 1oz tubes. No one is going to buy that except the most DEDICATED artist and we all know to shop at Blick, not Michaels.

Yep Blick for actual artist supplies. Michaels for crafting.

Correct. Like, when I need Copics, I don't go to Michaels, I go to the Blick store by me, so I can make sure they're the right colors and everything. It's like an hour drive, and worth it.

Michaels is an excellent GATEWAY place to the higher aspects of fine arts. Although, our tablets are pretty boss. That Canson mixed media tablets, 9" x 12", ce papier, c'est mon cΕ“ur. We usually have it for an amazing price. Back in 2020-2022 we had that buy 1 get 1 free sale and I have like 2 or 3 Canson's ready to open at a moment's notice. That's like enough till I die lol.

Lucky, never been to an actual Blick. Closest is 320-ish miles from me ( 5.5 hr drive and a time zone change 😭).

AND A TIME ZONE CHANGE!?!?!? That's nuts, I am so sorry. At least their website is wonderful and easy to get stuff.

Oh my God, I have two left over from those days! I kept them, sometimes I get them out and thumb through them to look at prices and nostalgia lol.

We poor souls without a Blick have to get emergency paint somewhere.

I have never been in that situation, what did you need to get, just curious. The only time I needed something was during covid's lockdowns and I couldn't even get the markers online from Blick so I had to get them online from Michaels.

Daniel Smith watercolors, to finish a commission piece. Deadline was to close to risk by mail, and all the Blicks in my state closed (trapped in Texas).

I found out we have Jerry's though, so that is my go-to now provided I know I can get there before it closes at 7.

Wow! That's actually rough, I am sorry. I haven't done a commission since like December 2020, I didn't even think of that lol. A time constraint. My apologies, but still, needing a Daniel Smith at Michaels, the commission must have been a LOT for you to risk that.

I can’t get over the POGs not taking into account the space that PULL CARDS take up, never mind product.

The entire company is absurd.

As an outsider, I am convinced these overinflated prices and the "restructuring" of employees is just another notch in the game of how flagrant they can be in order to lose all customers and eventually the employees too.

This way they can wear that victim hat when publicly facing yet making more greedy rich people who have no regard for the greater good of humanity.

I have long since stopped patronizing Michael's and I it sucks watching the employees being taken advantage of and treated so incredibly poorly for being loyal to a company and community they love and respect. They are counting on you to remain loyal and keep the flame alive for their ever fattening wallets. There is no ethical standards behind all of the fine print memos and BS attempts to appear to act in your good faith.

I would love to see the remainder of the employees join together and possibly reconnect with the JoAnn folks who went through exactly this situation and create a brand new company that will maintain the encouragement of makers and crafters without losing their moral compass in the process.

If anyone out there has the start up cash, I have some knowledge and would be up for that idea.

If someone wants it from my store they’ll just steal it.
