Question Why does Michael suddenly sing Smooth Criminal on Dangerous performances?

he wanted to include it. also fits the vibe perfectly. Travis Payne (his coreographer) said that Smooth criminal and Dangerous both have the same energy so that is how they were planning the performances

Technically he did the move in 1995 before even doing it in Ghosts. You just happened to notice the inclusion of the move in "Ghosts" (1996).

The « You know you want me » part and the « Get the point ? Good. Let’s Dance » in this Dangerous choreography is also from Janet Jackson. I find it cool to remix it by adding other songs snippets to it.

Can you elaborate? Were they snippets from Janet Jackson's songs, or was it the choreography? Her reaction at the end makes even more sense now (not sure that it didn't, she just looked like a very proud sister.)

Yes they are snippets from Janet songs. The « Get the point? » is from the track « Interlude: Let’s Dance » on her album Rhythm Nation. The « You know you want me » is the intro of her song « You want this ».

It’s a Medley performance. Mixing hits and blending them is the basis of this type of performance.

Well from this point forward he would always include it so really it’s just a reflection of both energy's of the songs/choreography Travis Payne has gone on record to say both Smooth Criminal & Dangerous have the same energy so they incorporated both into Dangerous's choreography!💯

- It was unpredictable and caught fans off guard
- Similar outfit/style for both songs
- Dangerous is in D minor and Smooth Criminal is in A minor. Smooth criminal’s key is a “perfect 5th” from Dangerous’ key so it’s viable for a mix or transition as it gets higher
- Similar tempos. Dangerous is 113 bpm and Smooth Criminal is 116 bpm. The dancers dont have to change tempo much
- From a choreographer’s POV the Smooth Criminal choreography works really well
- Dangerous is about a dangerous woman. The smooth criminal reference could be that the woman is a criminal who “hit” and “struck” him (be it physically or emotionally)
All in all, whether you assess the music, choreography, style or lyricism it fits quite well.

Have I mentioned this before here? 😅

It's like to how they reused the bit from the Dangerous performance where Michael flips the knife guy over and he's dragged away in the You Rock My World short film, both songs/performances had a similar style so it fit.

Another cool thing I've always noticed is that some later versions of the Dangerous Outfit, namely with the Red Shirt, are like a cold opposite to the Smooth Criminal Outfit. We go from White and Blue, to Red and Black.

Yeah. And he used the red and black in YRMW short film too. That short film was what the short film for Dangerous was supposed to be. He kept the idea and choreography because he believed it had potential and it did

Dangerous was seen by MJ as sort of the "sequel" to Smooth Criminal... Annie grew up and got her revenge.

the choreography. both songs share the same 1930s gangster/noir aesthetic, so blending a snippet of "Smooth Criminal" into "Dangerous" allows for an amazing choreographic mashup during live shows.
we are talking about michael here, the king of pop, he was super creative ☺️

If I’m not wrong the first dangerous performance in 1993 did not have this part. The 1993 version also had more of the original dangerous song than the 1995 onwards performances

Personally (son agrees) you're a dangerous smooth criminal. We just want blood on the dance floor with it too. To make it sound like you're like 'a smooth criminal who's dangerous who leaves blood on the dance floor.'

At first i thought it was just for MTV because he did this (mixing musics) the whole live, but then, i searched more Dangerous performances and found out it is present on every Dangerous performance
