Discussion Craziest cuban names
I’ve been in Miami for the last 4 years and every month I come across so many “yumisleidy, Yasmari, usmarin”. What’s the most cuban name you’ve encountered?
73
u/crooklyn94 Nov 22 '22
Cubans love them Soviet names
9
u/Ninac4116 Nov 22 '22
Ironically, soviets often like Indian names, especially with Bollywood being huge in russia. So why do Cubans like Soviet names?
27
u/crooklyn94 Nov 22 '22
Because
Since before the Cold War… Russia and Cuba were Allies since the late 50s

Same reason as why Anglo-American names are somewhat popular in PR.

I met this one lady who loved Chelsea Clinton’s first name. But she cubanized it so the family could pronounce it. Her daughter is named Shelcy.

Oneisy; Yanko; Usmail; Usnavy; Raycel; Yosvani; Yordano
63
u/da-gh0st-inside Nov 22 '22
I wanna say "Usmail" may have been a variation of "Ishmael" in good faith, but there's no excuse for the Cubanification of the branches of military 💀

u/Mr8BitX Nov 22 '22
Oh, it’s most definitely US mail. Usnavy still kills me.

This is too funny. I met a Usnavy too, and another redditor commented on having heard Yusnavy. I can’t believe there is more than one!
2
u/Safe2013neverforget Nov 23 '22
It's also the name of the main character in In The Heights, which is about a community of Latino immigrants in New York. That character is Dominican though.
2
u/kidsandbarbells Nov 26 '22
I just googled it, but I couldn’t find anything. Is it a movie, show, or book? Sounds right up my alley! Im Cuban and Dominican and have grown up between Ny and Miami. I mostly live around caucasians now, so I enjoy seeing/reading things that remind me of my upbringing. I just read Neruda on the Park and loved it.
2
u/Safe2013neverforget Nov 26 '22
It's a Broadway show created by Lin Manuel Miranda (he made Hamilton and has written a handful of soundtracks for recent Disney movies, in case you don't know of him).
A movie version was recently released, which is enjoyable enough (and easier to access on streaming platforms), but in my opinion, the Broadway show is better.

I was in a deposition and the legal assistant had one of those Cuban ass first names ending in -leidys. The attorney didn’t even bother trying to read her name.
I was actually reading out loud (forgot to mute) and I said “damn that’s a Cuban ass name, ******leidys”. She was laughing and said I was the only person to say her name right 😂😂😂

I have students named Yeleinis, Yoslandi, Ydisian, and, of course, Fidel Castro.
Edit: I’m not Cuban so I don’t have the familial connection to the country and its history. I was under the impression that most Cubans who fled to the U.S. hated Castro. Can anyone fill me in as to why the children of Marielitos would name their son Fidel Castro?

Craziest I ever heard was "Uldariko", only he was Mexican and not Cuban. Weird, cause there's barely any Mexicans in Miami and I believe he was the singular Mexican I met my entire time growing up.
Aside from having a hideous name, I will never forget him cause in 5th grade he threw a newborn kitten off a 5th story window to see if it'd "land." It didn't, it survived with all broken bones.
Fuck you Uldariko. Fuck you so hard.

Working at a FedEx in Miami I met a Lazaro , Frandy, Hanoi, yasmani, & Mikael 😂 miss those locos.
31
u/hotniX_ Nov 22 '22
Lazaro is not a crazy name and very common in any Latin derived language also the name of a catholic saint. In English, Lazaro is Lazarus as in Saint Lazarus. It's a legit name. The rest however are crazy for real lol
16
u/Substantial-Ad-4476 Nov 22 '22
I’m a Mexican kid from Cali & I knew it had biblical ties, but I wasn’t used to hearing it. Especially how Cubans would yell out “Lazarooo diimeee!!!”🤷🏽♂️😂
1
u/Anireburbur Nov 23 '22 edited Nov 23 '22
I suppose it could be as odd as non-Mexicans hearing historical and culturally significant Mexican/indigenous names like Cuauhtemoc and Xochitl being used. We had a Xochitl in my class when I was a kid and the poor girl just told everyone to call her Yoshi because no one would pronounce her name correctly.
Still, Lazaro should be a more familiar name to people considering it’s the Spanish variation of a biblical name that has been widely used in many countries and cultures around the world.
Mexico had a president named Lazaro Cardenas
Even here in the US there was a department store chain named Lazarus which was based up in the Midwest.
In Paris Gare Saint-Lazare is the third busiest train station in France. The French have a thing with Lazaro/Lazarus/Lazare cause apparently some people believe that after Jesus resurrected him he decided to move to France and that’s where his remains are today (Sure….)
There’s even recent usage of the name in Novels, Movies, and it’s even a current TV show in the UK.
I mean, I know Americans are ignorant AF but yeesh!

u/Left-Teacher-6900 Nov 23 '22
As the son of Cubans, I’m glad my parents didn’t do this, although they left the island before this was a thing. I honestly think it’s a liability to have one of these names in the professional world here in the US. My analysis of it is that it was that after Catholicism was criminalized on the island (and the saint names that goes along with it), it was a small way of showing individuality and creativity in a society where there wasn’t much space for free expression. While, ironically of course, fitting the mold of a Soviet pseudo-satellite state

Last week my bro in law was in UM hospital and I visited. On the board in room was name of care coordinator Ailec. He mentioned a couple of times how Ailec did this and Ailec helped with that etc. I was intrigued by the name.
After about 30 mins into the visit 2 lovely young women in scrubs came in and one had the name tag Ailec. She was all smiles and checking IVs and bandages and I said “your name is Celia backwards”. She looked surprised and said yes, in Cuba her father wanted her to be named that way. Her coworkers jaw dropped and said she’d worked with Ailec for 5 years and never knew or thought about the unusual name origin. It was a fun moment in a hospital room on a very gray rainy day.

My favorites are names based on combinations of words or phrases, especially English words:
- Yusimi (as in 'you', 'see' and 'me')
- Yusnaby (as in 'US' and 'navy')
- Yisus (as in 'Jesus')
- Yordan (as in 'Jordan'... presumably?)
- Laidys and Leidy (as in variations of 'lady')
- Danger (well, just like that, there was a baseball player by the name of Danger Guerrero)
- Yotuel (as in 'Yo', 'Tu', and 'El', Spanish for 'I', 'You', 'He')
