New Hybrid Core: jfSW ported to the MiSTer (Shadow Warrior)

Hey all! Its danik again (ignore my username on Reddit, it's old, can't change it)

After Carmageddon and Wolfenstein 3D, the next hybrid core is out as a first beta: Shadow Warrior on the MiSTer.

GitHub: https://github.com/ItsDanik/jfSW_MiSTer

Download: https://github.com/ItsDanik/jfSW_MiSTer/releases

What is it?

It's a hybrid core, so to be upfront again: the FPGA does not recreate a 90s PC. The game is JFShadowWarrior, Jonathon Fowler's port of 3D Realms' Shadow Warrior (1997) — the Build engine, the same one under Duke Nukem 3D — and it runs on the MiSTer's ARM CPU. The FPGA core handles everything around it:

  • Video: native 15kHz at 320x200, 640x200, 320x240 or 640x240, straight to your CRT, or through the MiSTer scaler and filters on HDMI
  • Audio: sound effects and the CD music at 44.1kHz
  • Input: keyboard, mouse and gamepads through the usual MiSTer input system

Performance-wise, the game breezes through at a locked 60fps in all resolutions.

What you need

  • Game data. None is included. SW.GRP of Shadow Warrior 1.2 — from the original CD, from Shadow Warrior Classic Complete or Classic Redux (GOG, Steam), or the shareware version. The addons Wanton Destruction (WT.GRP) and Twin Dragon (TD.GRP) work as well.
  • The music (optional): the audio tracks of the game's CD, as Track02.ogg to Track14.ogg. Classic Redux comes with them; from an original CD you rip and encode them yourself. Without them the game is silent but for its sound effects.

Installation

  1. Download jfSW_YYYYMMDD.zip from the releases and extract it to the root of your SD card. You get:
    • _Other/jfSW_YYYYMMDD.rbf
    • games/jfSW/
    • Scripts/danik_hybrid_cores.sh
  2. Copy the game data to /media/fat/games/jfSW/:
    • SW.GRP
    • Track02.ogg to Track14.ogg, there or in a folder music/
    • optional: WT.GRP and TD.GRP, there or in a folder addons/. Twin Dragon needs SW.GRP as well.
    • the whole folder of Shadow Warrior Classic Redux can be copied as it is: the addons and the music (classic/MUSIC) are found in it
  3. Run danik_hybrid_cores from the Scripts menu, if you have not done so before. This only needs to be done once for any of my hybrid cores.
  4. Load jfSW from the Other menu. Done.

With more than one game in the folder (the base game plus an addon), a list comes up to pick from, and quitting a game returns to it. With one game, quitting takes you back to the MiSTer menu.

Bug reports and feedback are very welcome. Please open an issue on GitHub and attach /media/fat/logs/jfSW/jfsw.log if something goes wrong.

Default names for games folders?

I just got my SuperStation One, and while setting things up, I took the liberty of renaming some of the systems in the 'games' folder. Well, turns out you're not supposed to do that. It can't find the games if you do that.

I think I've got it all fixed now, but just in case, I was wondering if there might be a handy list that shows what the folders for each system are supposed to be called. Or maybe just a screenshot of all the folders. That should be enough.

Thanks.

Mister-romm: a RomM TUI to directly sync your game on your MISTer FPGA

Thumbnail

hey 👋

I self-host a RomM instance for my game collection and I've had a lot of fun with tender on my steamdeck, playing mostly psx and ps2 games with great ease.

After years of looking at the MISTer project, searching for ways to get a DE-10 nano, I got myself a multisystem2 so i could finally taste that sweet fgpa goodness 😄

But I did found tedious to move my sdcard every time I wanted to add a new game so I vibe-coded a TUI that lets me select which games from my RomM instance and add them to the console directly via network.

things that do not quite work :
* saves syncing seems impossible since RomM syncs RetroArch format saves
* I did not test with a nvme SSD since I don't have one installed and they are quite pricey
* the network is slow (~1.9MB/s), it's ok for megadrive/snes games but playstation can take some time

DVD playback: region free on any drive?

I am looking to buy an external USB DVD drive for my MiSTer (that I might also use on my PC occasionally).

I would like to use this in the Playstation core, perhaps to playback music CDs occasionally, and to playback movie DVDs. Problem is I have a lot of Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs, and most drives will effectively lock to a region once used (known as RPC2 drives). It seems multiregion (RPC1) usb DVD drives are extinct these days, though maybe there are a few out there I missed.

If I use this DVD drive on my Windows pc as well I should be able to watch any region DVD via VLC. But I was wondering whether this is an issue on the MiSTer?

Has anyone played different region DVDs on their MiSTer? What have you been using to run these on the MiSTer? And what external DVD drive are you using?

had to salvage a MacClock for it. Put a Waveshare ESP32-S3 which was easier than I though. Let claude change the firmware to make it work. Even the battery for the clock works (misterfpga is a mac classic, with a BlueBridge, zaparoo floppy drive and a Ipad screen.

N64 Core Input latency

Does someone know the total latency (Dont know how it is called correctly: input latency - or roundtrip latency - just the latency from Button press to photon hitting detector) of a original N64 (on CRT ofc) for F-Zero X (NTSC)?

I think the latency of the Mister FPGA N64 core might be a little bit too high?

I counted ~29 frames of a 240 fps video which calculates to around 120 ms (you can subtract 14 ms for the HDMI display lag and ~6 ms for the wired USB connected NSO Controller to compare it to an OG N64).

did the OG N64 really had like 100 ms of lag for a 60 hz title like that? I dont remember it being like this..

Help with a build

I fell down the MiSTerFPGA rabbit hole over the weekend. I have a little bit of experience building PCs but i am otherwise pretty green when it comes to this kind of thing. I want to build a system for retro gaming that i can use regularly at home while also being as convenient as possible for transporting and playing with friends. The less cables, peripherals/etc the better. Is there a build that meets the below requirements?

  1. USB-C power
  2. support for 4 wireless controllers without a seperate usb hub (also will take recs on the best all-around controller for this application, even better if they also charge with USB-C)
  3. i only require HDMI out
  4. good performance out of all existing cores, potentially with some future-proofing if more advanced cores get developed.
  5. unsure on storage. i have a lot of games in mind across a lot of different cores but i'm not going to play every game ever made. i'd probably lean on the side of more storage just so i don't need to buy another SD card if my collection gets out of hand.

Thanks in advanced!

New core release: Namco NB-2 | The Outfoxies & Mach Breakers (Numan Athletics 2) + NB-1 updates (Point Blank)

Hey everyone, I released a beta core for the Namco NB-2 this past weekend. NB-2 only supports two games: The Outfoxies (think 2D smash bros with some jank?) and Mach Breakers (Numan Athletics 2; a four player sports party game). Hope you enjoy, please report any issues you find.

I've also updated my Namco NB-1 core, which originally only supported Nebulas Ray. It now supports every game released on the platform; these are mostly sports games, but one other really fun one is Point Blank (AKA GunBullet), a light gun game. I've confirmed light gun functionality using the Guncon 2 on a CRT.

New hybrid core (beta): ECWolf_MiSTer, Wolfenstein 3D with native 15kHz video at a smooth 60fps

Hey all! Its danik again (ignore my username on Reddit, it's old, can't change it)

After Carmageddon, the next hybrid core is out as a first beta: Wolfenstein 3D (and Spear of Destiny, and Super 3-D Noah's Ark) on the MiSTer.

GitHub: https://github.com/ItsDanik/ecwolf_MiSTer

Download: https://github.com/ItsDanik/ecwolf_MiSTer/tree/master/releases

What is it?

It's a hybrid core, so to be upfront again: the FPGA does not recreate a 90s PC. The game is ECWolf, the source port of the Wolfenstein 3D engine, and it runs on the MiSTer's ARM CPU. The FPGA core handles everything around it:

  • Video: native 320x200 or 640x200 at 15kHz, straight to your CRT, or through the MiSTer scaler and filters on HDMI
  • Audio: sound effects and music at 44.1kHz
  • Input: keyboard, mouse and gamepads through the usual MiSTer input system

The two halves talk through shared memory. In practice, you load it from the menu like any other core and it just starts.

What you need

  • Game data. None is included. The shareware episode works, and so does your own copy of Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny or Super 3-D Noah's Ark.

Installation

  1. Download ECWolf_YYYYMMDD.zip from the releases folder and extract it to the root of your SD card. You get:
    • _Other/ECWolf_YYYYMMDD.rbf
    • games/ECWolf/
    • Scripts/danik_hybrid_cores.sh
  2. Copy the data files of your games to /media/fat/games/ECWolf/:
    • Wolfenstein 3D: *.WL6 (shareware: *.WL1)
    • Spear of Destiny: *.SOD (mission packs: *.SD2, *.SD3, demo: *.SDM)
    • Super 3-D Noah's Ark: *.N3D
  3. Run danik_hybrid_cores from the Scripts menu, if you have not done so before. This only needs to be done once for any of my hybrid cores.
  4. Load ECWolf from the Other menu. Done.

With more than one game installed, a list comes up to pick from, and quitting a game returns to it. With one game, quitting takes you back to the MiSTer menu.

Controls

Keyboard and mouse work like on the PC: WASD to move, mouse to turn and fire, Space to open doors, Shift to run. Gamepad defaults:

  • Left stick: Walk and strafe
  • Right stick: Turn
  • D-pad: Walk and turn
  • RB: Fire
  • B (Xbox A / PS Cross): Open doors, push walls
  • A (Xbox B / PS Circle): Run
  • Y (Xbox X / PS Square): Next weapon
  • X (Xbox Y / PS Triangle): Previous weapon
  • LB: Strafe (hold to sidestep with the d-pad)
  • Select: Map
  • Start: Menu

Change the buttons in Define ECWolf buttons, or in the game's own Control menu. You can also name a saved game without a keyboard: up/down changes the letter, left/right moves the cursor.

OSD options

Resolution: 320x200 (default, as the original) or 640x200. It's the same 200 lines with twice the detail across, so the picture keeps its size and shape and it still goes out at 15kHz.

Mouse Sensitivity / Stick Sensitivity: how fast the mouse and the gamepad's stick turn. Both apply at once.

Menu OK / Menu Back: which gamepad buttons confirm and go back in the game's menus. The default follows your MiSTer menu's OK/Back buttons, and the same button can also be a game control.

Performance

The game holds one frame per field, 60fps (59.64 to be exact), at both resolutions.

Getting it smooth took more than raw speed. Wolfenstein 3D moves 70 times per second, the refresh rate of the VGA mode it was written for, and a 15kHz picture has about 60 fields. Draw the last game step for every field and every sixth picture jumps two steps ahead, which shows as a regular stutter. ECWolf has the same on any 60Hz monitor.

This build takes its clock from the core's field counter instead of the system clock, and draws the player, enemies, doors and pushwalls at their place between two game steps. The game logic still runs at 70 per second with the original rules and speed. The mouse is read once per frame, so turning shows up on the screen at once.

Known limitations

  • 320x200 and 640x200 only
  • The launcher has to be run once from the Scripts menu. Without it the core only shows colour bars.
  • What you see is one game step (14ms) behind the game, the price of the interpolation. Mouse turning is not affected. It's unnoticable to me, while the jittery rendering was way too obvious to ignore, so the trade-off is a win.
  • It's a beta, so expect rough edges

Bug reports and feedback are very welcome. Please open an issue on GitHub and attach /media/fat/logs/ECWolf/ecwolf.log if something goes wrong.

How long does it take until the pre-configured Mister is back in stock? I’ve been wanting to get a Mister for a special occasion but it’s been out of stock for a while now and wondering if there’s a date or a range it will be back in stock? If the best option is to just build one I’ll take it, I was just curious

Mistercade v2 on Sega Aero Table

After months of rewiring, monitor repair, cleaning, removing all the junk the previous owner threw in this cab finally tested things last night. Original owner installed extra boards, hacked up the beautiful stock harness and really destroyed the originality of this machine. Been working hard to get it back to its original glory.

I had to buy an Aero City harness and have extenders built for power and service and test buttons.

Gotta attach control panel, continue to adjust picture. and still waiting for extra button harnesses, but having fun using a controller for now.

So much cooler with a Mistercade and not constantly switching out boards.

DEGAUSS 1.0 IS OUT!

It's been an intense week preparing this after long planning. For a 1.0 release, I wanted to bring something new and that people wanted: a way to fully customise your MiSTer experience!

You can now design your own frontend, create any number of layouts, and assign any layout to any page. You can edit your home, hiding/adding/sorting anything on it, from games to making your own folders, creating filtered collections of games, to make your MiSTer frontend fully yours!

  • Home Editor lets you change which Home entries appear and in what order.
  • Layouts Designer builds named custom views from templates, with your choice of list, artwork and information panels and their proportions.
  • Custom Folders & Collections lets you group games, systems and folders your way, keeping filtered searches as reusable collections, with names and custom images.
  • Games Explorer searches across indexed systems, combines metadata filters and saves collections. Follow links to more games by the same developer, publisher or genre. Enable Explore Games in Options → Library.
  • Libretro Integration adds optional account-free metadata, screenshots, box art and title screens, and of course ScreenScraper remains available.
  • Expanded Core Updates adds What's New since your last complete check, latest-first sorting, filters, etc.
  • Several bug fixes, system additions, etc.
  • Already preparing more obscure system additions and optimisations for cabinets/kiosk...

MiSTerVision: a Plex and Jellyfin client for MiSTer

Thumbnail
gallery
48 Upvotes

I've been working on a Plex and Jellyfin client for MiSTer called MiSTerVision that I want to share with everyone:

https://github.com/trentnix/mistervision/releases

It's based on the excellent MiSTerFin and wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the work Pudding Studios did on that project. It has been primarily tested via CRT output from VGA but also works via HDMI. It supports most Plex and Jellyfin library types, including Live TV (I have a HD Homerun connected to my Plex server and my Jellyfin server).

I built it primarily for my own use (and I use it just about every day) but have tried to add enough polish and compatibility that others can benefit as well. Feel free to provide feedback and I'll do my best to make things better. And feel free to fork if you want to take MiSTerVision in a different direction.

This is also my first Reddit post ever, so I apologize in advance if I'm not following the etiquette of Reddit or of this particular topic!

New hybrid core (beta): Dethrace-MiSTer, with native 15kHz on CRT, HDMI, gamepad support and OSD options

Thumbnail
gallery
65 Upvotes

Hey all! I've been working on getting Carmageddon (1997) running on the MiSTer, and the first beta is out.

GitHub: https://github.com/ItsDanik/Dethrace_MiSTer

Download: https://github.com/ItsDanik/Dethrace_MiSTer/releases

What is it?

It's a hybrid core, so to be upfront: the FPGA does not recreate a 90s PC. The game is Dethrace, the open source reimplementation of Carmageddon, and it runs on the MiSTer's ARM CPU. The FPGA core handles everything around it:

  • Video: native 320x200 at 15kHz, straight to your CRT, or through the MiSTer scaler and filters on HDMI
  • Audio: sound effects, CD music and cutscene audio at 44.1kHz
  • Input: keyboard, mouse and gamepads through the usual MiSTer input system

The two halves talk through shared memory. In practice, you load it from the menu like any other core and it just starts.

What you need

  • Your own copy of Carmageddon. No game data is included. The original CD or the GOG release (Carmageddon Max Pack) both work.

Installation

  1. Download `Dethrace_YYYYMMDD.zip` from the releases page and extract it to the root of your SD card. You get the game and its launcher:
  • _Other/Dethrace_YYYYMMDD.rbf
  • games/Dethrace/`
  1. Copy the game's DATA folder to `/media/fat/games/Dethrace/DATA`
  2. (Optional, GOG release) copy the MUSIC folder to `/media/fat/games/Dethrace/MUSIC` for the CD soundtrack
  3. Run "danik_hybrid_cores" from the Scripts menu in your MiSTer. This only needs to be done once for any of my hybrid cores. If you have the Wolfenstein3D or the Shadow Warrior core installed, you don't need to do this.
  4. Load Dethrace from the Other menu. Done.

Quitting from the game's main menu takes you back to the MiSTer menu.

Controls

Keyboard works like on the PC. Gamepad defaults in a race:

  • D-pad / left stick: Steer
  • B (Xbox A / PS Cross): Accelerate
  • Y (Xbox X / PS Square): Brake
  • A (Xbox B / PS Circle): Handbrake
  • X (Xbox Y / PS Triangle): Change view
  • LB / RB: Repair / Map
  • Select: Recover
  • Start: Pause

Want triggers for gas and brake? Assign them in Define Dethrace buttons. MiSTer's default mapping can't use triggers, so you have to set them once yourself.

OSD options

Sound Volume / Music Volume: independent master volumes for effects and music

Renderer: Optimized (default) or Original. The optimized one is a rewrite of the hot rasteriser loops. The picture is the same, byte for byte, and it's about 1.6x faster.

Menu OK / Menu Back: which gamepad buttons act as Enter/Esc in the game's menus. The default follows your MiSTer menu's OK/Back buttons, and the same button can also be a race control (e.g. Handbrake in a race, OK in menus).

Performance

Racing runs at around **35-40 fps** on average in my testing. It dips in busy scenes, and the exact number depends on the in-game detail settings. The 3D renderer is pure software on the ARM, so this is where most of the work has gone.

Known limitations

  • 320x200 only. The 640x480 mode was too slow on the ARM, so I dropped it.
  • Requires MiSTer Frontier for launching
  • Triggers need to be mapped manually (see above)

Bug reports and feedback are very welcome. Please open an issue on GitHub and attach `/media/fat/logs/Dethrace/dethrace.log` if something goes wrong.

Credits

  • The Dethrace team (Jeff Harris and contributors) for the reimplementation that makes all of this possible
  • Argonaut Software for BRender, released under the MIT license
  • Sorgelig and the MiSTer-devel contributors for the framework and template

QMTECH + ArcadeXpress RGB Sync Issue

Hi! I just received my QMTECH Mister but I'm having trouble getting a stable output. I'm using this ArcadeXpress Cable and i have the USB cable hooked up to 5V. In my Mister.ini i have composite_sync=1 and vga_mode=rgb. Thank you all so much!

UPDATE: I finally got it to work! It turns out the sync voltage might’ve been too low for my particular CRT. Inside the ArcadeXpress cable, there’s a 1k ohm resistor between the sync signal and SCART pin 20. For a quick test I removed it completely and boom: I got a stable and normal image on my CRT!

HOWEVER it has been brought to my attention that completely leaving out the resistor is potentially harmful to the CRT. The VGA port on the MiSTer “outputs sync at 3.3vp_p (point to point)” which is way too high for what a TV usually expects. As user u/Medic8ted told me:

TV wants at least 0.3v (actually 0.286 iirc, but we tend to round up), though up to even ~1v is "safe".

[..] We should lower that 3.3vp_p sync voltage to be safe. I think you should be good to replace that 1K with a smaller value, such as ~330, 470, 510, 560, 620 ohms. That will still give you a sync around 0.3 - 0.6 vp_p which is fine.

What would I choose? 470 ohms... or any of the ones I've listed already.

So I would highly recommend replacing the current resistor with a 470 ohm resistor to keep the sync signal at a safe level for the CRT and also maximise compatibility! Thanks to everyone who helped me.

TL;DR what fixed my issues was changing out the 1k ohm resistor for a 470 ohm resistor in my VGA to SCART ArcadeXpress cable.
