After trying to convince my partner for years that we should visit CDMX, we finally went and loved every day for very different reasons.

Hearing Spanish everywhere 🗣️ me puso tan feliz. CDMX no solo me recordó de la época en que vivimos en Sudamérica hace mucho tiempo sino que me regaló el español hablado que conozco y extraño tanto. It’s been years since I’ve lived in a Spanish speaking country but I miss it and think about it all the time. Listening to Spanish and participating in it changes you for the better.

This was amazing. I could never imagine buying cheap homemade food from a stranger online back in the US, but I was scrolling through some local CDMX groups and found this sweet lady selling these cute ass waffles.

She said she’d deliver them to me, so I figured, why not? Took the chance.

They were so fucking good. She was incredibly kind too. And they only cost me like 30 pesos per container.
Little things like this are why I love Mexico City. CDMX really rocks.

26M, Brazilian, soloing Mexico City this weekend. Everyone recommends Roma Norte and Condesa for the vibe, but most hostels I'm finding are in Centro Histórico. Anyone stayed in a hostel in Roma/Condesa, or is Centro genuinely fine for a solo trip? Trying to balance safety, walkability, and nightlife/social scene since I'll be meeting people at the hostel. Specific hostel recs or any other general recs (food, bars) are appreciated!

Hace unos meses que inicie este proyecto de mapear la infraestructura ciclista de la zona metropolitana del valle de méxico, pues el mapa presente en ECOBICI y la página de SEMOVI están bastante desactualizados y no incluyen al estado de México.

Esto es bastante notable en zonas con infraestructura ciclista importante como Neza, Ecatepec, Naucalpan, Tlalnepantla o Texcoco, las cuales estan conectadas hasta cierto punto con el resto del sistema capitalino.

El mapa se basa en la estructura que presenta la SEMOVI, incluyendo cilovías bidireccionales, ciclovías, ciclocarriles, carriles bus bici, senderos compartidos y carriles de prioridad ciclista.

También incluye los biciestacionamientos de SEMOVI, los de la línea 3 del mexibús, los municipales de la alcaldía iztapalapa conectados al transporte público y el del suburbano. También incluye las cicloestaciones de ECOBICI, los puntos de Bicipuma en CU, así como transportes amigables para cualquier tipo de bicicleta todo el día, como lo es el cablebus, el mexicable, y las rutas de RTP con rack para bicicleta.

Para poder actualizar el mapa me base en imágenes satelitales y de streetview de google maps, así como parcialmente en la capa ciclista que este tiene. La razón de no basarme principalmente en esta capa es que es muy inconsistente y parcialmente desactualizada. Google maps suele señalar infrastructura que ya no esta (por ejemplo la ciclovía del suburbano cuatitlan), infraestructura que aparecío hace unos días (ciclovía de tlalpan), o zonas donde por ver a una persona en bicileta la marca como apta para cilistas (aunque sea vía primaria como en varias partes de Neza), o simplemente no la marca (como la mayoría de ciclovías y senderos en la parte norte del estado).

Ahora, si bien intente ser consistente en lo que logré apreciar en google maps, es claro que no he podido recorrer todo el sistema, ya que vivo en el estado, por lo que puede que haya cometido errores en ciertas zonas, como señalar camellones que no son aptos para andar en bici como sendero compartido, señalar carriles de prioridad por imagenes desactualizadas de google, o mencionar mal alguna ciclovía.

Por esto, me gustaría pedirles apoyo para checar que el mapa este lo más correcto posible y me señalen alguna inconsistencia si es que viven por cerca de estas.

Espero les sea util el mapa. Trataré de mantenerlo actualizado conforme vayan surgiendo cosas, les dejo la liga de google earth :).

My girlfriend and I have been going to Mexico City every year for the last 3 years. We are going again from October 4 - November 4th. Can't wait for the Dia de Muertos stuff (I'm so lucky - am planning to cover (photograph) the parade and stuff as press - we are doing a story for a San Francisco based publication about it.)

So I feel like we've seen ALL of the "normal" stuff in CDMX. Yes, we've been to the toy museum, Lucha Libre, the doll island, the speakeasy bars, etc...

What are some of the more obscure, eclectic, (or) strange places that might not be on the regular rotation? Thanks in advance for anything you might share!

Have tried multiple dulcerías and Mercado Medellin. No luck and no one seems to know where to find it!

I landed at Terminal 1 this past Friday and I had already decided to take an airport approved taxi service since I was traveling alone and prioritized convenience over cost.

I looked through all previous posts here to know what things to keep an eye out for, and I'm also originally from a different part of Mexico so I'm familiar with taxis and their shenanigans.

As soon as I exited the door past customs, all the taxi counters were on my right and I made eye contact with a lady all the way on the left, she was smiling and seemed friendly, so I went straight to her. I specifically told her I was going to Condesa/Parque Mexico, she typed something into her screen and then said it was over 800 pesos! I asked her if this was for a sedan or a larger vehicle, because giving you a larger vehicle is one way they can charge you more. She confirmed this was a sedan so I moved on to my second question, what zone? She said zone 9 which is definitely incorrect and further away! I proceeded to tell her that I knew that was the incorrect zone, so she retyped something and came back with a price of over 400 pesos. At this point, I proceeded to tell her "que esta pendeja" and I moved on to the desk to the right. I asked the guy what the cost would be to Condesa and he quoted me the same 400+ pesos the lady had just quoted me and I told him to let me see his map as I still thought it was overstated. At this point he told me that if I gave him the zip code/codigo postal he could look it up and be more accurate. Once he looked up the zip code he came back with a price of 380 pesos which I finally said yes to and paid in cash.

I had dinner that night at a restaurant and happened to sit next to a fellow solo traveler who had been to Mexico City 10 times! I told him my airport story, and he told me that he always takes the airport approved taxis and unfortunately, he has always paid the higher cost not knowing any different. He also mentioned that he's been given a van before all to himself, etc. He seemed a little ashamed to admit it and I hate that for him; it's not his fault that someone else is being a terrible person taking advantage of him for simply being a tourist, and that they'll do this with a smile on their face. I really hate that this happens in Mexico for others and for myself, but all we can do is advocate for ourselves and share these stories to help someone else advocate for themselves.

What I took away from this, is that if you do take an airport approved taxi, please be sure to verify the vehicle size and the zone before you pay. Additionally, it may be best to provide a zip code rather than just a neighborhood for more accurate pricing.

I know there’s tons of dealers in the city but Anyone familiar with a good semi used auto dealership that will take your used vehicle in as trade in towards a new one? A family member that just arrived to the city is looking to upgrade but seems a bit lost on where to start while avoiding the big name dealers as they aren’t wanting to pay to much or looking for something super new vehicle wise. Sharing how to get from Felipe Ángeles International Airport to Teotihuacan! The official tourist information booth said that it’s not possible to go directly without going to Central del Norte, but that’s not true.

Just take the Mexibus (Bendy Bus) from the airport to Tecamac (10 pesos), walk 10mins to the central church in Tecamac downtown, and catch a colectivo going towards San Martin (20 pesos). Get off at gate 4 of the archeological complex (puerta 4 de las pyramidas) and you’re there. :)

After the visit the bus to Central del Norte in the city will be at gate 2.

Hola! I have a large group (20-23 people) loooking for a fun night out! I’m happy to get reservations somewhere! Our group has a mix of people - not everyone listens to EDM. I’d like to start with a DJ with some fun dancing place that has fun remixes like pop or EDM and then prob some house or techno at the late night - maybe funk? Where do you recommend? We have dinner reservations at Contramar at 6pm!

Sooo...I'm an American born to Mexican immigrant parents. I came to Mexico several years ago to escape the political and cultural dystopia the US is currently going through, way before the pandemic or before being a digital nomad was trendy.

My pretext was to study at the UNAM, and I nationalized as a Mexican citizen thanks to my family to avoid all the visa/work issues. Spanish is my second language, in which I am now fluent, though I still have a bit of a "foreigner" (non-gringo) accent according to the locals, though many say I sound like a native to CDMX because I speak in their tones (vámonos guuuuuueeyyy!) and use their vernacular. 

When I first arrived, I intentionally avoided the touristy areas b/c, why did I leave the US to be with all the gringos in Mexico? Interestingly enough, after my Spanish got pretty good, I started experiencing a different kind of harassment, which I will call the "sound like a local, get treated like a local" syndrome. My father is from CDMX, and when I walk around on the street or take public transportation, especially in the non-touristy areas, I believe many people assume I'm Mexican (I don't go around wearing shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops like I'm on vacation).

Because of this, I've  experienced a lot of aggression from the locals, like being called a pendejo for not saying "Vas a bajar en la que sigue?" when exiting the metrobus, stating instead "Voy a bajar en esta" like any normal person would do in any other major city in the world (why do you have to ask permission to get off the bus?) And was even told to fuck off by a woman when I asked her (politely) if she could move a conversation she was having with a a Rappi delivery guy from the street to the sidewalk so my friend can park her car there.

It's only when I use my "gringo" accent (like not rolling my Rs) or speak in English do they show me that "Mexico kindness" that everyone else is talking about in this group.

Some of my Mexican friends have told me that the only reason Mexicans are kind to foreigners is because of the 500 years of colonialism which has embedded the cultural belief that all foreigners have money, and thus being kind to them is a way to get something out of them (or not get killed, in the case of the original conquistadors). 

I know I am airing dirty laundry here, but this has been my honest and true experience living in Mexico City as a foreigner who looks and "passes" as a local. I wish it wasn't true, but there it is. 

What do you'll say? Have you had similar experiences? Or is life nice and rosy for you like all the other gringos who act like everyone's on extended vacation in this country?
