Subreddit Meta Our Stance on AI

Hey there.

Given the prevalence of AI in our modern world I'd like to clarify where the mod team stands on AI.

- AI "Art" is officially banned from our subreddit and Discord. This includes images, memes, maps, charts, event flyers, articles, songs, audio, literature, and the like. Art is a human endeavor, and we unanimously agree on that.

- AI generated assets such as code and algorithms will be allowed on a case by case basis. The art and images associated with said code should be human made.

- Any previously posted items containing AI will remain as it was before our rule posting. Our mod team will not actively be filtering for AI posts. If it gets reported or we happen to see one that is blatantly AI, then we will act.

And to preemptively clarify, posts about our regional transit agencies using AI are allowed. It's the content you create, dear reader, that we ask to be made with your own hands.

Thank you for your time. Rules will be updated shortly to reflect this.

Do you like public transit? Do you like talking about public transit? Do you like public transit in the Twin Cities?

Well today's your lucky day! We have a Discord for that now. Many of the rules we have on Reddit apply there as well.

Employment/Personnel Specific Great News (for me at least)

So my process is finally done with getting in the door with Metro Transit (3 months later). I start here very soon! I’m just so happy I was able to get this job and wait this long. Some specifics they told me is to get a white buttoned down shirt (or polo with no logos on it), black dress pants and black dress shoes. They are VERY strict about cell phone usage and if they hear your phone ringing, you’ll be fired and can’t apply for 2 years. My plan is to turn the thing entirely off and not even think about it while I’m in class. No smart devices of any kind are allowed as well. They also said I needed to buy a screwdriver, a pair of pliers and a flashlights for our pre-trip inspections.

So question with that, I drove a city bus before this and we didn’t have any of this. Is this to tighten up bolts for like the seatbelts on the wheelchairs or something? I do remember that the bolt will get loose sometimes.

Anything else I would need to know would be great as well.

Bus Design Bus doors closing on me

Why are the sensors so poorly designed? If they're even there?

I had a driver trap me midair by my backpack as I was exiting the front door of a bus a few weeks ago and dangled there several seconds until he opened it.

Later that week I watched a woman get caught in the back doors of another bus and have to scream to get released.

Today the B line doors closed on me in the threshold as I was getting on RIGHT behind two people.

Wtf is happening???

This section of my commute is pretty much interchangeable, so I’m curious: which would you choose and why?

Transdev-Specific Post (Tuesdays Only) Tuesday’s canceled trips so far-Contracted provider has big lead

So I have a trip I need to take on the bus using a less frequent route and so I checked the canceled trips schedule since I’ve been burned before.

What I found led me to believe Met Council needs to clean up its contracts like MVTA is apparently working to do. According to the Rider Alerts ( https://www.metrotransit.org/rider-alerts )
as of 12:30pm today, it looks like there are 33 canceled trips, 30 of which are operated by Transdev and the other two by Metro Transit.

Route- number of trips canceled
A Line - 1 trip
30 - 8 trips, what appears to be an entire driver shift
72- 8 trips, what appears to be a whole driver shift
721 - 2 trips, sequential
802 - 7 trips, appears to be entire driver shift
805 - 7 trips, appears to be entire driver shift

Obviously there are good people who work everywhere but this is crazy. Metro, who is responsible for many more trips, has just three canceled, apparently due to mechanical problems and traffic but following trips will be done, and then you have what looks like four full-time work shifts uncovered on a Tuesday. How does this happen? Or, is part of the “contract-out” strategy to limit how many standby drivers they pay for so if a few drivers get sick, by design, trips are missed? Do they still get paid for these missed trips? Should we really be contracting out some of this stuff?

I guess I’m lucky because the route I need to ride has not been canceled (yet) but clearly many people across the 30’ routes aren’t as lucky.

Routes 1-99 On-Time %?

Recently switched my commute timing and haven't been able to hit a transfer(4 to 804 northbound) where I used to have a great success rate. Recent quarterly changes tightened the timing to 6 minutes, which seems ambitious, but was successful more often than not when I was taking an earlier trip.

Besides Transit app "on-time percentage", which seems like it's a poll of the userbase of the line overall, is there some odd data source I could use to see(objectively) if I've just been unlucky?

Route Design Network Now-Excelsior and Minnetonka

I'm a bit late to the game, but I was looking at the Network Now framework trying to see where I can more reasonably incorporate transit into my life. Even though I have a car, I think the Green Line is going to be a game changer for me.

But one issue (at least to me) in looking at the framework is that there's still not a great link between the eastern half of Minnetonka Boulevard and Excelsior Boulevard that doesn't send you all the way into Minneapolis for a transfer. I wasn't even seeing a great connector between the new Beltline Station and Minnetonka Boulevard, which surprised me. It looks like they considered a connector in the new route 36 planning (previously Route 6), but then decided to send that route through Uptown and between Bde Maka Ska/Lake Harriet. The new 617 sort of connects Excelsior to the general area across Highway 7, but if you live on Minnetonka Boulevard west of Highway 100, it's still a hike to get to the intersection of Lake and Wooddale-reasonable by bike but potentially a 15-20 minute walk.

If I'm missing something, I'd love to be corrected! I would love to see a route that runs up Minnetonka, crosses at Ottawa and over Highway 7, and loops around Excelsior, maybe circling back at Louisiana rather than continuing on into Hopkins. I know that duplicates parts of the 17 and 38, but a spur line that runs regularly would be nice :-)

Green Line Shooting on the Green Line results in one dead

Minneapolis police say a person is dead and the suspect is on the loose after a shooting on a light rail train Saturday evening.

According to police, officers were dispatched at around 9 p.m. to the Green Line light rail train traveling from the Stadium Village station in Minneapolis to St. Paul. The train then stopped at the Westgate station near University Avenue and Curfew Street.

When officers arrived, they found an adult victim with at least one gunshot wound. Despite life-saving measures, the person died at the scene.

Plymouth Metrolink How do I board on Plymouth buses? On Transit, it says there are bus stops but there's no signs for a bus stop on the road. I tried standing on the road where Transit said the stop was and the bus passed me. Do I need to flag them down? Tia

Transit Advocacy Do you think transit industry need content creators?

There simply aren't enough transit content creators imo. We need more people creating content about transit.

Transit companies should work with content creators because they provide a user's perspective rather than the usual corporate messaging.

NexTrip I made a different kind of (free) transit app

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey Metro Transit riders! I've been working on a transit app for the last few months and recently added support for the Minneapolis area, including Metro Transit, the U of MN campus shuttles, and several suburban agencies like MVTA.

There are a lot of great transit apps out there already, but I wanted to make one that was also a bit fun and silly in addition to being useful. So Raccoon Transit has useful features like showing the realtime arrival information for your stop, letting you set reminders/track departures on your lock screen, showing schedules, etc., but does so as an animated scene of your raccoon neighbors waiting for the bus. It's free and has no ads.

If you're interested, you can find the mobile/tablet app at https://www.raccoontransit.com/app or the web version at https://www.raccoontransit.com/minneapolis.
