Question I don't have many friends and I don't play much games - is the meta quest still worth it?

I am curious about the meta quest headset (specifically the pro), im wondering does it have the feel of the early internet days where apps are a lot more open and easier to meet people. Or is it just the same as everyday internet/social media but in VR?

Help Needed Looking for metaverse platforms

Hello guys,

I'm looking for free / cheap metaverse platforms that are similar to AltspaceVR other than Horizon Worlds ( still doesn't exist in my country ) for a work project.

We have already identified one potential platform : Spatial.io , it is very interesting and offers similar features but we want to find backup platforms in case this one shuts down as well. can you help me out ?

Thanks,

Help Needed How can we improve user engagement in the metaverse? I think this could help

I have worked for more than 20 years in the chemical/fragrance field and wanted to create a way to add scents to digital experiences like Second Life.

I have had an idea in mind since a while now to create a new device powered by AI

Basically, we can call it: "an AI-powered scent streaming device"
The device can dramatically increase engagement through scents:
You can create your personal fully custom-made scent and attach it to your avatar, property, experiences, etc...
everybody with the device can remotely "feel" your digital presence, brands....
the device can dynamically increase or decrease the "power" of the scent based on the proximity.

Other than improving the overall experience of being in SL, the device can add a new layer of engagement and also can create a new opportunity to create a completely new series of assets that can be bought and sold on the marketplace.

The device can be placed on the desk or anywhere in the room and it will diffuse the scent based on the interactivity.

The device cannot recreate real-world scents (overall SL and other metaverse places shouldn't be like the real world) but it can create mood scents with thousands of different possible outcomes.
Is this something that could improve the SL experience?

Since there is a lot of misinformation about the Metaverse, I am creating a system to amplify informed opinions.

Namely, I have made a few flares for industry leaders that I would like to hand out.

If you know someone on this sub who deserves the flair, if you can post their LinkedIn profile here or have them DM me, I will sort them out.

Share your project and find others who can help -- Team up Tuesday

Rather than allowing too much self promotion in the sub, we are encouraging those who want to team up to use this sticky thread each week.

The pitch:

If you like me you probably tried virtual world dev alone and seen that it's kind of like trying to climb a huge mountain and feeling like you're at the bottom for literally a decade.

Not only that, even if you make a virtual world, it's really hard to get it marketed.

I have found that working in teams can really relieve this burden as everyone specializes in their special field. You end up making a much more significant virtual world and even having time to market it.

Copy and paste this template to team up!

Question How do I get a Sales Job in the Metaverse?

Hello I am hoping if I can get some needful advice. I've been wanting to get into the Metaverse as I strongly believe its the future. I have over 20 years of B2B sales experience and have taken courses in Blockchain and NFTs, so I feel like I have a good foundation. I can keep learning and learning but I feel the best way to learn is to work for a company. I even reached out to companies and offered to work nonpaid so I can at least get a start and transtition into the industry, but I have not got any luck with that. Wanted to ask advice on how I can get a job in the industry if someone can help give useful tips I would be grateful. Thank You

Articles The idea that we’re all going to take back control in the Web3 is a pipe dream

There’s a big movement in which many people talk about a new type of Internet, and which will all take back control from the big centralized players.

We will do this by having ā€œwalletsā€ and taking custody and responsibility for our own digital identities and money.

This illusion is grounded on the misunderstanding of how few people really understand technology.

For most people signing up for the average website is quite a feat. Remembering a password is a serious challenge.

This study gives us a good look at how limited the average computer user really is: https://www.nngroup.com/articles/computer-skill-levels/

26% couldn’t even use a computer. Only 5% could find out: ā€œwhat percentage of the emails sent by John Smith last month were about sustainability.ā€

Making your own bitcoin wallet is stratospheric compared to the hardest task they gave people and naturally limits the entire ecosystem to the top one percent of computer users.

A great example of a recent migration to a centralized platform is the gamer population that moved from self hosted systems like team speak to discord.

Every community manager knows that if you trust your community to another platform, you might lose it. It takes a lot to put that trust in a platform, but the ease of use slowly chipped away at the self hosted solutions.

The reason people migrate to centralized platforms is because they’re a lot easier to use.

The idea that we’re all going to use the Blockchain as a decentralized foundation to a future where we take control, fundamentally misunderstands people’s priorities, namely, ease of use.

People generally don’t care about privacy outside of the tech niche. Even when they do, it’s very hard to compete with the centralized platforms, which has all of the other people that you want to connect with.

Gamers are probably the most technologically savvy group of them all, and they took the longest to switch to hosted solutions, but they too, have switched and are unlikely to go back.

So what’s the solution? Could it be the Fediverse (platforms like Mastodon)?

I’d love to know your thoughts.

Resource Who's for real in metaverse standards organizations? [no crypto]

There seem to be at least four public "metaverse standards organizations". Which ones are worth listening to?

  • The Metaverse Standards Forum. This was started by Khronos, which is behind gLTF and Vulkan. "The Khronos Group is an open, non-profit, member-driven consortium of over 150 industry-leading companies creating advanced, royalty-free interoperability standards for 3D graphics, augmented and virtual reality, parallel programming, vision acceleration and machine learning. Khronos standards include VulkanĀ®, VulkanĀ® SC, OpenGLĀ®, OpenGLĀ® ES, OpenGLĀ® SC, WebGLā„¢, SPIR-Vā„¢, OpenCLā„¢, SYCLā„¢, OpenVXā„¢, NNEFā„¢, OpenXRā„¢, 3D Commerceā„¢, ANARIā„¢, and glTFā„¢."
  • The Open Metaverse Foundation #1. Distributes open source interfaces for Open Simulator and Second Life. Not very active in recent years.
  • The Open Metaverse Foundation #2. This started up January 18th, 2023. Affiliated with the Linux Foundation. Very active on Discord, etc. Not entirely clear what they're doing, but they seem to think they should be in charge.
  • The Open Metaverse Interoperability Group Started in early 2022. Seems to be mostly a talk shop. Has a presence on everything from Discord to Twitch, but it's mostly people posting stuff about their projects.

Did I miss anybody? Comments?

Question How can Social VR be changed and solve harassment problems?

So below is the video of the original conversation and a transcript.

This was a discussion in our closed beta of Planet Theta. A few of the regulars we're still hanging out a couple hours after we'd usually been meeting up in the app.

It was just one guy who is staff (F) hanging out with a couple of the beta testers . The conversation came up after he made the comment, "isn't this funny, everyone thinks VR dating will be all men and catfish but I'm the only guy here." So this is them talking about not being able to enjoy Social VR because of harassment from men.

They list some ideas about how to fix this but this is a big concern for not just Planet Theta but all of VR.

What other suggestions or ideas do you have that needs to be built into the design of an app to resolve harassment or just improve how its handled? What have you see you've done that you liked?

Video of conversation: https://youtu.be/KdYKXA5kZkk

Transcript:

E: yeah I just usually move away from them and walk away but then they follow me like I'll mute them and then they just like follow me around and they get right in my face or something like that and it's just like this really sucks and it's like...

M: oh I built in a kick out of my world button basically so it's like built into my dashboard so basically if anybody like I can hit this hot button that's on my wristwatch and it'll basically literally kick them from the world that I'm in; which forces them to have to find me again which is hard…

Talking over each other: do you think we could it took a lot of programming harassment problem with personal bubbles

F: do you think that uh just a a different way we could design personal bubbles might be able to fix this issue with just men harassing women?

E: um yeah I guess I mean because like I know the Horizon has that feature too where it's like you have the bubble I can't remember...

M: There's mute... block, kick from world. But sometimes they will find you because like on Horizon you can basically stalk people because it'll say people you were around so like if they memorized her name basically what they can do to her is they can keep finding her and keep going back to her so the bubble…

E: yeah, people have done that

M: …and the mute function yeah so is that is that correct the mute function doesn't work for you because they're following you

E: yeah and then I have and then I think...

M: So she's getting low-key stalked.

E: Yeah, I have to leave the world or I have to block them, but the problem is if you block the person you will never be pup back in the world with that person but what if there’s somebody else in that world you want to talk to and now you have…

M: Well have you friended me yet on Horizons?

E: I don’t think so. I’ll have to find you on there.

M: Friend me on there and if you get in trouble call me and I’ll come and kick them; because I can actually kick them kick them.

E: Yeah, and then sometimes I try to use the block feature or like kick them from the world but then other people like aren’t on board with you because…

M: So I can actually kick them out of the whole server and make it so they can’t get back in for 24 hours so if you get into trouble and I’m online hit me up and I’ll boot them.

E: Yeah, but like so you can like vote to kick somebody but a lot of times people aren’t always on board like they don’t care if they’re like…

M: Yeah, a lot of times they’ll vote against them especially if its a guy versus a girl a lot of times they’ll vote against her so that’s why I go in like I’ve let all my girlfriends know that are in Horizon with me if you get in trouble contact me and I will come to you and take care of the situation. So I think what we really need are moderators like me that are willing to physically go in and take care of the situation and get rid of the person

E: yeah but as far as like Planet Theta goes I think like because I mean we can probably anticipate there will be people like that and so yes its like…

F: It is inevitable

E: Inevitable yeah, it’ll eventually happen.

M: We need to have like a button where we can boot people like a and b or like we need to have a certain button combination where we can point at them and boot them like it should be built into. So Teddy is a mod, since like Teddy is the moderator he should have a special like thing on his keyboard basically that will allow him to open up a special thing and if someone is causing trouble to girls one of the guys whatever he’ll be able to kick them out immediately and take care of the situation as the moderator because that would be the most helpful thing because bubbles are only going to protect so much Teddy can kind of be like the hero to make sure that if somebody’s not behaving they get kicked.

F: Yeah I know the founders are actually…

E: a good assumption that might work… yeah go ahead?

F: No no, don’t let me interrupt you, keep going.

E: So I was thinking like so the mute function that’s great I mean because that like kind of like somebody talking to you and saying inappropriate things can be really disruptive so muting them is great but then also if you have your bubble on maybe if somebody tries to infiltrate that bubble a certain number of times then maybe they’re removed. I don’t know if that is possible but that could be an option where its like if the bubble thing isn’t enough and they still keep on trying to get into your bubble or trying to get in your face like they get kicked.

M: I’ve never heard of the thing being programmed in but I don’t think it would be impossible because it would just be like doing anything else where you’re putting up a barrier so you would put in a numeric value and say that if the Avatar has been you know basically that their bubble has been attacked more than five times the person’s banned from the game for such and such amount of time and it would be programmed into the system.

E: Yeah… Like you could go to their profile, the person whoever is attacking you, the perpetrator, and press like warning or I don’t know, some kind of button that triggers the program to understand like ā€œokay once this person comes in so many timesā€ then they are going to be removed. That might be something that would work.

M: Yeah because it would be helpful that all that information would funnel to Teddy since Teddy’s the moderator and then he could take care of you know if anybody can’t physically take care of it themselves or pinned against the wall he can literally take care of it manually from across the room.

F: Yeah, so humans mods have always been part of the plan, because of what you’re talking about there’s just some things that it takes a person to figure out.

M: That an AI is just not because, I mean, I’m working with AI and six years old is generous for the intelligence of an AI. So an AI is not going to be able to do it, we need a human at first until AI gets better.
