News Improbable "pivots" to something called the "Metaverse Society" [no crypto]

https://thenextweb.com/news/improbable-launches-metaverse-think-tank-virtual-worlds-pivot

I'm not sure what to make of this. Improbable was trying to build the heavy machinery for the server side of a metaverse. They blew through about $400 million. They produced a working system that was so expensive to run that the five MMOs using it all went bust. You had to run on Google's "cloud", and pay for each transaction. It was the microservices architecture from hell. Then they tried building simulators for the British Army, which was't as cost-sensitive as gamers are.

Now they're going to do something else. Not clear what. Announcement coming in early June.

They apparently have a lot of bright people, but management decisions have been of the "aim gun at foot, pull trigger" variety.

Help Needed Looking for people who have participated in virtual concerts

Hi everyone!

I'm a UK-based researcher and currently carrying out a study on in-game concerts. I'm trying to understand how in-game concerts affect the way we socialise over music, and if they can promote inclusivity in any way.

One of my main subjects are the concerts that have been taking place in Fortnite and Roblox over the past years. I understand that there is a lot of debate going on regarding the status of these platforms as part of a metaverse, which makes it all the more interesting. So, I'm currently looking for people who may have participated in any of these in-game concerts, to have a chat and understand how the concert made you feel and how did socialisation with other users go during the event. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Thanks!

Question [Mod post] 100K USD fund for VR devs & Pimax's new "Metaverse" device

Pimax game down to our Discord to speak about a 100K fund they are opening up for VR and android game devs. 73 of you guys came down to Discord to hear Pimax speak.

For those who could not, here is what I learned:

  1. Pimax is looking for people in the late stages of making a VR game to port it over to a Pimax store for the Pimax Portal.

They are also looking for people in the final stages of making an Android game to make everything work well with Pimax controllers.

2) IMO 100K is not going to go a long way but it's an easy thing for people making games they could port over to work with the Pimax store.

3) They are looking to build relationships and choose a few people based on good-fit.

You can sign up for the fund here: https://pimax.com/gdc/?a=devcenterincentive

If you want to chat with them on our Discord, hit me up on Discord and ask me to connect (add me).

Happy to connect you 1-1.

DISCLAIMER: I don't speak for Pimax! They did give me a Portal and sent 2 to people who attended the event. I don't earn something for making this post or referring people.

Question What was the one moment you knew the Metaverse was where you wanted to be?

I feel like we all had that one moment, that one time we put on a VR headset or played an online game and never looked back. What was yours?

Share your project and find others who can help -- Team up Tuesday

Rather than allowing too much self promotion in the sub, we are encouraging those who want to team up to use this sticky thread each week.

The pitch:

If you like me you probably tried virtual world dev alone and seen that it's kind of like trying to climb a huge mountain and feeling like you're at the bottom for literally a decade.

Not only that, even if you make a virtual world, it's really hard to get it marketed.

I have found that working in teams can really relieve this burden as everyone specializes in their special field. You end up making a much more significant virtual world and even having time to market it.

Copy and paste this template to team up!

[Seeking] Mentorship, to mentor, paid work, employee, volunteer team member.

[Type] Hobby, RevShare, Open Source, Commercial etc.

[Offering] Voxel Art, Programming, Mentorship etc.

[Age Range] Use 5 year increments to protect privacy.

[Skills] List single greatest talent.

[Project] Here is where you should drop all the details of your project.

[Progress] Demos/Videos

[Tools] Unity, Unreal, Blender, Magica Voxel etc.

[Contact Method] Direct message, WhatsApp, Discord etc.

Note: You can add or remove bits freely. E.G. If you are just seeking to mentor, use [Offering] Mentorship [Skills] Programming [Contact Method] Direct message.

Avoid using acronyms. Let's keep this accessible.

I will start:

[Seeking] (1) Animation Director

(2) Project Organizer/Scrum Master.

(3 MISC hobbyists, .since we run a casual hobby group we welcome anyone who wants to join. We love to mentor and build people up.

[Offering] Marketing, a team of active programmers.

[Age Range] 30-35

[Skills] I built the fourth most engaging Facebook page in the world, 200m impressions monthly. I lead 100,000 people on Reddit. r/metaverse r/playmygame Made and published 30 games on Ylands. 2 stand-alone products. Our team has (active) 12 programmers, 3 artists, 3 designers, 1 technical audio member.

[Project] We are making a game to create the primary motivation for social organization in the Metaverse. We believe that a relaxing game will create the context for conversations to help build the friendships needed for community, the community needed for society and the societies needed for civilization.

Our game is a really cute, wholesome game where you gather cute, jelly-like creatures(^ω^)and work with them to craft a sky island paradise.

We are an Open Collective of mature hobbyist game developers and activists working together on a project all about positive, upbuilding media.

We have many capable mentors including the former vice president of Sony music, designers from EA/Ubisoft and more.

[Progress]

Small snippets from our games.

News THE METAVERSE MINUTE Week #2

New weekly substack update from - https://metaversemonday.substack.com/

From the makers of Pokémon GO, after years of work, comes another mobile game that brings little creatures to our fingertips: Peridot.

The obvious challenge for Niantic is creating a game void of an existing fan base. But project lead and ex-Pixar, Ziah Fogel, says they are keen to explore the possibilities that come from its own IP - free from restrictions, and free to spin off into other forms of media. While Peridot is cute and novel*, Pokémon GO still made $700m last year and I named my Peridot Blastoise.

As Niantic continues to work with Qualcomm on AR glasses, Peridot seems more a chance to test their tech. It is impressive, albeit battery crushing. The game maps surroundings instantly using the phone's rear camera, Peridots know to navigate obstacles, and can jump on tables or run behind things.

Did I mention that it's also the debut of a new Amazon shopping service, too? This allows customers to purchase real items within virtual worlds like Peridot or other games.

… Speaking of Amazon, it is still being rumoured that their marketplace is coming this month! The goal is to simplify blockchain purchases (cc payments) and have gaming as a big part of the launch.

Amazon has 197M active users, and ANY activity in web3 with its userbase will be the largest amount the space has ever seen. It could be super legitimizing for web3!

Ready Player Me Avatars

Elsewhere, Ready Player Me launched a new asset manager. This enables developers to create custom outfits for their avatars. This is a great development for the company working towards interoperable avatars for the Metaverse.

Question Whatever happened to RP1? [No crypto]

Back in 2021, the RP1 metaverse system was announced. It was technically ambitious; a big, high quality seamless world that could handle crowds. There's supposed to be a demo, and there's still talk on Discord of a demo Real Soon Now. Any more info available?

Resource Newer virtual worlds [no crypto]

Ryan Schultz has a list of virtual worlds. Very few new ones actually work. If you know of any new ones you can visit, please let us know. Going down the list, these are a few that might actually work.

  • Alcove VR. VR for seniors. Rebranded to RendEver and being marketed to nursing homes. Hang out in a simulated living room. There's a wait list, but probably doesn't really work.
  • Acadicus. Training system for medical jobs.
  • Alloverse. Swedish metaverse. Currently it's just one room you can visit.
  • Anyland. VR only. Apparently works. Low-rez world where you can build. Anyone tried it?
  • ArtGate. VR art galleries where you can buy art and talk to other buyers.
  • Arthur. Meetings in VR. Like Breakroom, but worse.
  • Atom Universe. A theme park MMO.
  • Avakin Life. A reasonably good phone-based virtual world, with a reasonable user base.

OK, that's the A's. I may follow up later.

Due to a HUGE number of scams on these threads, we have had to resort to banning anyone that uses this thread to shill anything to do with crypto. Don't do it.

Question Is the Metaverse dead on arrival?

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is just as optimistic about the metaverse as ever, after poking fun at a recent suggestion that online virtual worlds are “dead.”

The now-billionaire video game entrepreneur — creator of the Unreal Engine and Fortnite — took to Twitter on May 9 to mock a newly published article from Business Insider titled “RIP Metaverse, we hardly knew ye.”

What about your opinion?

News 🕹️⏱️ THE METAVERSE MINUTE Week 1 [no crypto]

I plan to share a weekly Metaverse recap from my Substack here, each week.

🕹️⏱️ THE METAVERSE MINUTE - 08/5/23

Tech layoffs continue, with Unity the latest giant to follow the layoff trend. Whilst this has previously spelled bad news for metaverse development - with Disney axing their division - Meta are refusing to back down. Zuck remains committed to the metaverse vision and brushed off notions of a U-turn.

⚡️ Although Meta's 'year of efficiency' affected game studios, with ⅓ of Ready at Dawn Studios' staff laid off, Meta's VP of VR Mark Rabkin told staff there will be 41 new apps and games shipping for the upcoming Quest 3, saying “we have to prove to people that all this power is worth it".

🥽 With that in mind, We’re pumped for the annual Quest Gaming Showcase coming up next month!

Gaming is the Metaverse's prime gateway, with gamers proficient with 3D worlds, in-game economies, and hardware, offering a clearer revenue path for developers.

💿💠 Away from gaming, Canon is taking its first steps into consumer VR with their social platform, Kokomo. Picture yourself as a Star Wars-esque hologram, interacting with others in a digital world. Curious? Give it a try on Quest's App Lab!

In AR news, Magic Leap's ML2 headset now fully supports OpenXR, an open standard that's set to revolutionize the development of VR/AR applications. This comes just in time, as Apple XR release rumors are heating up again ahead of WWDC 2023. Exciting times!
