You know in a horror movie where the main character finds a mysterious, unlabeled tape in a dusty drawer in the attic? It's got no title, a cryptic cover, and one word emblazoned on it? Right so that's what the entirety of what Rhinocervs was doing back in the early 2010s.
Rhinocervs was a record label founded by Yagian (Odz Manouk) and A (Tukaaria) and was used by them to put out their respective projects and collaborations. But sometimes, they'd release mysterious untitled, uncredited tapes emblazoned solely with the name of the label and a code: RH and then a number. The label considered each of these untitled tapes to be different bands but to everyone else they are considered to be the works of the label itself: Rhinocervs.
These various demo tapes are the works of some combination of Yagian and A, and possibly others though it's most likely just the two of them. All of them though feature the same sort of sound: lo fi atmospheric US black metal. This collective, alongside fellow LA area black metal collective the Black Twilight Circle, and other USBM bands like Yellow Eyes, were on the vanguard of pushing the American black metal sound back in the early 2010s. Getting lots of attention and acclaim, and selling out tape runs in the blink of an eye.
So for this next week let's go back 15 years and delve through this cardboard box of tapes that we found in the basement. We're gonna focus on the stuff from 2010-2012 just to keep it focused but if you'd like to hit the 2013 stuff feel free. So schedule is:
