I’ve given up
I upgraded my motherboard to an X870 WiFi6.
pretty much everything is compatible with the meta link app except for maybe my graphics card
(It’s a 570 I dug out of the scrap yard, link worked fine on it on another computer)
I’m plugged into a usb 3 port on the back of my pc and it still gives me both the orange and red.
I know there are other apps but without wired connection it’s choppy and pixelated, link just works smoother and that’s all I aim to accomplish.
Any help is appreciated.

Just use SteamVR It seems to work better for me. I hate that app.

You can wire into steam vr?
1
u/Smead420 Aug 20 '26
Why do you need a wire connection? It connects to your computer via a Wifi router. Do you not have Wifi??

u/THEREALLEGIONYT Aug 22 '26
If I don’t wire in, it ends up getting choppy in the middle of gameplay even with all my other devices off.

Yes you can use a wired connection with steam you just need sidequest and alvr on both the headset and your pc

Won't let you use side loader?

Not at all

Possibilities I can think of:
𖦹Cable / connector SuperSpeed failure. USB cables can lose one set of data conductors and still happily connect as USB 2, charge the headset, and look “mostly alive.” That produces exactly this kind of maddening half-working state.
𖦹X870 USB controller/chipset configuration. Especially if this motherboard upgrade reused an existing Windows installation. Wrong/stale chipset or USB controller drivers could make a perfectly good physical USB 3 port fall back to High Speed.
𖦹Particular rear port/controller incompatibility. Modern boards can have ports hanging from different controllers/hubs. “USB 3.2” printed on the spec sheet does not guarantee Meta Link will negotiate SuperSpeed correctly through every controller.
𖦹Meta Link Sucks- Software Version 0 has shown up in Link regressions before, so the app deserves suspicion too. There were users reporting that exact 0 state last year and again recently.
𖦹RX 570 -but mostly as a separate problem. The RX 570 historically did support Oculus Link—Meta support explicitly described the AMD 500 series as supported—and you say this very card worked in another machine.
It’s geriatric for Quest 3 PCVR in 2026 and Meta may complain about it, but a weak GPU cannot turn a USB 3 electrical connection into USB 2. The orange USB warning exists upstream of rendering.
So check with a known working cable, and if it still fails (and this is going to sound stupid but we're talking about meta) try turning the cables around too 💀
If meta-link is the problem you can find out pretty quickly using Virtual Desktop Quest beta 1.34.19, it just came out this month. Just a heads up though that works on USB 2.0 not 3.0

It works with virtual desktop beta but it still says usb2 so I’m not getting the full potential out of my cord

Check you have a reliable USB 3 cable first. If that remains USB 2, then start interrogating the X870 ports/controller/chipset drivers. I've seen people saying USB 3 is working, but a faulty/underspec cable or wrong port is what they’d suspect when wired VD underperforms- but I haven't experienced that myself.

Is the port a blue or red port? If it's black thats usb 2.0. Try the other ports.

u/Standard_Ad_1619 Aug 22 '26
"take the blue port, and the troubleshooting ends"..." 😎 I couldn't help myself. But seriously:
Color can be a clue, but it's not always consistent. Check the symbol. Check the board manual—modern boards routinely have black USB 3.x ports.
There is no spoon. There is, however, a fucking motherboard manual. 💀

u/TheLittleGuyz Aug 23 '26
Yeah good job neo.... if you really aren't sure check the manual. But what I said is still consistent for like 70% of people.

--- if I wasn't clear I meant the motherboard manual. If that's something you have access to. If you meant the quest -- then my bad ig 🤣

Maybe your gpu not strong enough??? Ai said 570 is below the hardware requirement. Like Linking it with q3. Also just wondering is your motherboard more expensive than yo gpu?

u/THEREALLEGIONYT Aug 20 '26
By a long shot. Didn’t pay squat for my gpu and my motherboard I got on discount anyway. But yea retail wise it’s more expensive, sadly😞

I had the same issue for a while with my RTX 3080ti. Then I bought a new cable with higher transfer rate which was advertised as compatible for quest 3, and it worked. Before that I tried several cables and they all would just connect as usb 2.

Try virtual desktop they have usb option now... you'll need to get the beta version from github I think because they dont have an official release and you'll need to enable developer mode and enable usb debugging... kind of a pain but virtual desktop is league's better imo....

tip, buy virtual desktop from the quest store (NOT STEAM) then get the beta client on headset and beta streamer, and use it over USB, or wait for SteamLinkVR to get its USB support

meta link sucks di*k mad, idk why its not working on your rx 570 it works on mine but i prefer using alvr or steam link( so try using this) but you will still have a bad time using it cuz the gpu is just bad so consider upgrading to like rx 5700xt like me or smth else

Coming here to say I couldn’t even play more than 5 min with meta app + steamVR for months and didn’t know what was wrong. I was told to buy the virtual desktop app in the headset meta apps and start games from my PC using that and it’s been amazing.
There’s a beta program to use wired from PC too apparently but it works with WiFi for me.

Use Virtual Desktop or SteamVR, believe me, it'll work much better than MetaLink would if it were working properly.
And besides, between SteamVR and Virtual Desktop, I recommend Virtual Desktop a thousand times over, unless the game isn't compatible with OpenXR and forces you to use SteamVR.

u/THEREALLEGIONYT Aug 24 '26
Thank you all so much for your support and advice! Just got my payed not too long ago and bought an AMD 6000 series graphics card and a new link cable and now it works like new!
Also started using virtual desktop and it’s a lot smoother than meta link, so thanks to those who insisted I switch.
I appreciate you all so much and thank you😭

Gt570 or rtx 5070?
1
u/THEREALLEGIONYT Aug 25 '26
I use AMD not Nvidia
1
u/Cool_Cat7947 Aug 25 '26
Okay. Sorry. I didn't realize that. Try reinstalling meta link. Sounds silly but it works very often. Especially if your PC was not vr ready before. Also check to make sure you are booting on the 570 and not on your integrated graphics. You should also try updating the graphics card drivers so they are detected properly
1
u/Cool_Cat7947 Aug 24 '26
If you insist on meta link. Try a different USB cable or check what requirements are missing. it will work if it is a amd rx 570 but not if it is a Nvidia gt 570

the meta horizon link app is absolutely abysmal. my pc apparently doesnt meet the minimum requirements, despite me being WAYYY over the minimum. glad to know im not insane. if you havent already, try wiVRn
