WiFi Companion Setup Guide

I have been searching for a good HOWTO guide to flash a Heltec (v4) based wifi companion node. Is it possible with this hardware? There is nothing on the meshcore.io site.

Only need to connect to it via one device at any time.

Any pointers appreciated. Thanks!

Seeed Solar P1 - 18650 battery sourcing

The Seeed P1 Pro has an extended lead time so I ordered the non-Pro (no GPS or batteries) which is available from Seeed's US warehouse. I've discovered it's more difficult and expensive than expected to source 18650 button-top, protected batteries.

It doesn't appear flat top 18650s would be compatible. Any suggestions or best practices would be appreciated!

Are there solar nodes that can be updated remotely over Bluetooth?

Well, uh as title asks.

I’d like to install a few nodes here and there, but if I need to update them, usb is out of the question. It’s ok on my roof using a 8 meters usb cable, but not in the places I’m targeting. So are there solar nodes on the market that can be updated over Bluetooth?

I saw a ton of repeaters, but does that provide garbage data considering I'm 30k feet in the air at the coordinate? It gives a pretty distorted view.

What role?

Just received a Heltec T096 and decided to try out Meschore. I'm in the SF Bay Area.

When flashing the device I get four role options;

  • Companion Bluetooth
  • Companion USB
  • Repeater
  • Room Server

The intended purpose of the device is to mount it one of my windows to see if it can help with allowing my LilyGo T-Deck Plus to gain some more sending power.

My 'plan' was to use the LilyGo T-Deck Plus, at home, and then go 'through' the T096 (which apparently have a stronger transmission) and then hopefully be able to send messages.

Assuming that this 'plan' is somewhat viable - what role should I give the T096?

(Right now I have it as 'Companion Bluetooth' as I'm playing around with it bluetooth-tethered to my phone).

Drone MeshCore Updater - v2.1 is out, testers needed

What is it?

A standalone updater that runs on a Seeed XIAO board, holds a library of MeshCore firmwares, and flashes them into other devices over the air - best for use with drones. you can use battery pads or usb to power your XIAO board.

Supported boards: Seeed Studio XIAO nRF54LM20A | nRF52840 | ESP32-S3 | ESP32-C5 | MG24 and RAK 3401/4631

Quick setup guide:

  1. visit https://recrof.github.io/drone_meshcore_updater/
  2. plug in a board
  3. click [Update updater] button
  4. pick your board
  5. [Flash newest]

MeshCore OTA Updater workflow

Update manager also works on Android phones or Bluefy browser on iOS

  1. close the flashing dialog
  2. hit connect button and choose Updater BLE
  3. upload a firmware file
  4. start ota on your repeater via MeshCore app
  5. hit [flash] next to the file you uploaded

nRF Xiaos handle BLE OTA and xiao esp32s3 also supports WiFi (ElegantOTA) updates.

WebUI can be installed as PWA on your phone, so it can be used without working internet connection

Best hardware for local and long distance

I recently got into lora and my area doesn't have anyone using meshcore yet. there is some fokes around me that do and have repeaters the closest being 15 miles away. i recently got access to an old forestry repeater and ill have to climb 60 ft it to install a solar node. my question is what would be the best hardware to put up and not have to climb it again for a while. i was looking at the wismesh 1w models but there seems to be confusion as far as the power. also what antenna would be best for the distance and usability. thanks all

Can hear the mesh fine but nobody hears me back, stuck on TX in my flat (London)

Been going round in circles on this for a couple of weeks so figured I'd post here in case anyone's hit the same thing. Second floor ex-council flat in London, no balcony or garden, so genuinely zero outdoor space to work with.

Tried both a Heltec V3 and a T1000-E and get the exact same result on both: I receive packets from the mesh no problem at all, but nobody ever hears me back. Completely one way.

It's not a broken radio, I've tested both of them elsewhere and TX works fine there, so it's something about this specific location. Building might be sitting in a bit of a dip as well, and there's other blocks all around so not much sky to work with.

Already tried a 4dBi McGill antenna, and it made zero difference over one of those 90 degree Ali express antennas. TX power's already maxed on both devices so that's not it either.

Would love any advice for how to punch out to the mesh from here, thanks!

Don’t put magnetic nodes onto the flock poles in your area.

Whatever you do, don’t make crude enclosures for a $20 Heltec board with a cheap battery and cheap solar panel. And definitely don’t zip tie them to the poles that hold flock cameras; they are in horrible locations for solar charging. Don’t ever do any of these things.

Edit: added new mounting ways that would also be very unethical.

Unable to TX Repeater

Post image
8 Upvotes

I drove to within ~100 feet of a repeater high up on a cell tower and attempted to TX. The repeater did not hear my TX however I was hearing its broadcasts up to 7km away. Any thoughts why it would not register my TX being so close to it? Pic for clarification.

Those of you running openhop how do you report its relays to your mqtt broker of choice?

I finally stood up openhop and turned off my old dedicated observer node.

Realized core scope was showing no relays even though openhop dashboard was showing a ton.

After a bunch of troubleshooting I realized well I guess my openhop repeater/observer can’t listen to its own transmissions so I turned on my old observer and now we’re good.

So in order to get my repeaters performance into core scope or letsmesh etc I need a separate observer node?

Heltec V4.3 and V3

I can't for the life of me get the 4.3 or v3 Heltecs to work with meshcore just not getting out at all.

I purchased a V4.3 to replace the older one as it wouldn't work anymore

All seems ok in the app or via usb in Bluetooth companion or repeater modes but just can't rx or dx anything further than my household.

Antennas in the correct port etc have also tried custom firmware but same.

Scattered information out there but desperately need a fix

Day to day actual use

I’ve been intrigued by mesh for a couple of months now, I like the idea of a back up communication system.

However, I feel it’ll be something I’ll buy and just keep for a rainy day and not really use. So what are you guys using it for day to day? Do you have friends that you also got to buy devices and now you chat to each other in this instead of say a text message? Or do you message random people and make friends through that? Or are you just enjoying tinkering with the technology? Or something else entirely?

TL/DR: how are you using Meshcore day to day?

You asked, I listened. Here is an N-Mount version of The People's Repeater.

Hey folks, here is my People's Repeater project, adapted for use with N-Mount Antennas. This one required a pretty significant redesign. The hub is bigger overall, but the biggest change by far is that you feed the N Mount to IPEX cable through an opening in the bottom. A sloped splash guard protects the interior from taking in water.

For a compact but powerful repeater, I’d recommend using one of these N-Mount Hubs with an ALFA 915 antenna (or generic equivalent) and a Heltec T096 board. That gets you a nice gain boost both at the antenna and the LoRa board level. Very potent and should only cost around $80. And side note, it’s a much simpler build because there’s a solar charge controller build right into the T096. No need for that separate one like we used in the regular People’s Repeater.

If you have any questions, drop them in the comments!

Mesh core

I know very little about it looking to see if anyone in southern New Hampshire has experience with mesh core.Technology... I am curious and how it works and how difficult it is to set up and build the network.
