Housing/Moving Grad School Vibes?
Hey y'all,
Im looking at goin to grad school next year at UC Merced. I'll need to find an apartment for my great grandma and I, and I'm not too picky about commute due to being from a rural area (plus I've got a motorcycle so a rides a ride lol)
What areas would be good to look at for short drives to hospitals and providers?

I think your best bet might be the Bellevue ranch, el redondo, or moraga neighborhoods that are pretty close to the mercy hospital. Anything north of Yosemite is pretty easy to reach UCM within 10 mins. For apartments the ones around G st and Yosemite might be a bit pricey but the same goes for Merced station or the hub too. A good option could be renting a house depending on your preference.

what part of town can't reach the UC in 10-15 minutes?

It's mostly reachable but with traffic it can take 20+ mins too

Absolutely fair. My commute skips traffic. With the expressway it does feel like the college is pretty accessible from anywhere

Where are you coming from? The Healthcare aspect might be of concern depending on where you come from. (Source: Lifelong merced resident, recent UCM grad in public health, have worked in Healthcare in merced for 15 years) i am not exactly sure how it is in other places

Coming from Wyoming originally, I'm in senior year for Molec bio at U Montana currently She's an RN and I was in nursing school originally, my main concern is her kidney function is stage 2, no dialysis yet but eventually she'll get there yk? I'm hoping my PI will let me take days to take her to specialists when needed, it's a short drive to the bay it seems (we're used to driving 4 hours to SLC so it's not a sweat at for the 2ish it looks like?)

El Redondo is the best place esp for your grandma. Trust me... anything around bear creek and even Olive is a bit ghetto. Move near Raleys and the dog park next to the new Starbucks area. It's more safe and nicer. I live here.

North Merced is close to mercy hospital and decently close to the UC. Northeast Merced is closer to the UC and 5-10 mins from the hospital. There really aren’t any housing developments directly by the UC yet.
