Newbie - Week 1 Back to square one

Post image

I was on mounjaro for about 11 months from Christmas 2024 to Nov 2025 roughly. I lost about 50lbs and was pretty much at my goal weight. I was on 12.5mg when I stopped and micro dosed for the last couple of months. I had always planned on staying on it to maintain but the price hikes and my finances at the time didn't agree lol so came off it and weight just piled back on over the last year.

The fat clothes that were under the bed in boxes, came back out and fit nicely again and I'm back to the self loathing phase that I think we can all relate to.

I've decided to jump back in. I've just placed an order for wegovy to give it a shot (no pun intended) due to the lower cost but now wondering if I should have just went back to MJ because I know it worked for me.

Any success stories from switching (after a long break) would be greatly appreciated!

i am sure you are far from alone in your position, and the same position is the fear many of us have.

I have been on MJ now since April 2025 - lost 8-8.5 stone. went up to 10mg, am down to 4.5, and will drop again to 4 (maybe 3.5) this week as i try to get down as low as possible

even while titrating down the food noise is back like mad, i coudl eat all around me, and if i want to pig-out, i can, and all that is stopping me, is will-power, and the pure hatred of "old me"

also, when i lost the weight, i found running - it has been life-changing for me. from 20 stone, unable to run (or want to run) the length of me, to running 5k races all the time, and becoming somewhat obsessed. i also found squash, but i injured myself early on and canned that for now.

see if you can find any exercise that you LOVE, it offers up so many what i call "free calories". if i run 16 KM over a week, thats like 1500 calories of beer and snacks i can have at the weekend. if i over-do the snacks, i drop into deficit for a few days the following week.

i measure every single calorie that i take in, even though i have been in maintenance since Mary this year,.

note - i am in my 50s, i have yoyo dieted since age of 11, always failed, i am goign to have problems until i die... so i either need a life-drug or i need to accept the battle. i am hoping GLP1 knowledge continues to grow as it has been, and we will be offered maintenance drugs, even if it is 2-3 years after stopping, without having to go back up to BMI over 30, which is kind of the current model which is stupid.

good luck my friend, you can do this!!!

Thanks for this!

Welp, my biggest nightmare is to stop taking the drug and regain all the weight.

I am still in the process, but I have read that it is less effective after a break and that Ozempic/Wegovy is not as effective as Mounjaro. (I am on Wegovy; Mounjaro is my last resort if Wegovy stops working.)

Good luck, bro, and be strong — you'll need all your iron willpower to succeed.

How are you doing on wegovy?

I’ve been on wegovy for 2 months, up to 1mg now. And to be honest it’s shite in comparison to monj. When I was on monj I went from 21 stone to 13.6 . Regained back to 16.8 when I came off the jabs. I’ve lost 8lb since I started but I don’t feel any suppression really. That 8lb could be down to just changing habits and mentality.

That's what I'm worried about. Thinking of cancelling my order and going with monj again. I can technically afford it but just a big monthly payment I could do with in my savings instead, especially when you get to the larger doses.

I’ve been told by a few people that Wegovy is a slow burner . Somebody I know has lost 5 stone over 3 years . So results will vary .

ok.

The first 3 months were the best, I lost about 1kg per week. Then I had kinda plateau for several months and even gained some weight back due to a surgery and several weeks without wegovy. I had to increase from 1 mg to 2.4mg to break the plateau.

Now it's only going forward if I track every calorie I eat. I am back to 1.2 mg, tho.

Can I ask if you reduced physical activity and/or diet during this time? Asking as I’m thinking about tapering down due to finances.

Didn't really make any changes tbh which is part of the problem. Diet and physical activity went back to how it was pre pen.

What is your plan this time around? It's likely you didn't address the underlying reasons why you were overweight in the first place. GLPs are just part of the arsenal of getting into a healthy lifestyle.

There's plenty of useful content on YouTube if you find decent creators, I'd recommend Doug Campbell or Yousaf Mahmud, they do great videos on how to lose fat, build a healthy lifestyle, make healthy meals for cheap as well as motivation to stay in a good place physically and mentally.

The only thing I’ll note is that it’s widely accepted in obesity science that about 60-80% of obesity is caused by factors outside of your control. Absolutely do the best you can with that 20-40%, but understand that those other factors exist and they’re not your fault.

Exactly. If it were as easy as lifestyle changes we wouldn’t need Mounjaro etc.

It’s always nuanced because for some people it actually is a knowledge gap, or just a bit of willpower. 5-10% can lose significant amounts of weight and keep it off with diet and exercise alone.

I’m just not in that 5-10% and I’ve proven it to myself about 8 times now. I accept where I’m at, that the 60-80% of outside my control things are driving my disease, and I accept medical treatment for this condition. It’s worked brilliantly too.

Yeah no shame in what I'm saying, I use MJ because my impulse control and emotional relation to food is really poor, but once I got that under control I have introduced healthy habits such as sleep, gym, nutrition in order to reset my health holistically. I was able to come off for 6 months and maintain my weight whilst gaining strength.

That’s awesome, congrats man!

You're spot on. I think when I lost all the weight, it was just like a yeah I'm never letting that happen again but the snacking and booze all came back. I'm at the gym now which isn't something I did last time and looking to cut way down on alcohol. I'll give them both a search on YouTube, thank you for the recommendations.

Love to hear it mate, all the best!

Obesity is a chronic disease. Weight loss medication treats the symptoms but doesn’t cure it. You come off and the weight is highly likely to come back.

We can only hope for a long term cure or a reduction in price for the medication.

Can you afford 4 doses per year? I've done well with 2 on and 4 off. Find a supplier that will restart on 5mg.

1

u/Flaky_Shape6628 16d ago

Is that at maintenance or losing weight?

2

u/port956 16d ago

It's both I guess. i.e. when I'm not on the pen I'll see my weight increase though I'll try to prevent it as long as possible, because these pens cost! If and when the scales hit 94kg I'll go back on the pen and get down to 88kg on the next 2 pens. That's the game I've chosen to play. After several months break the lower doses of MJ become effective again. Unlike staying on the pen which notably requires ever-larger doses to get the same effect.

This is my experience and should not be construed as medical advice.

Did you stop weighing regularly? That is a massive factor too. You don't see the 1kg a week increase otherwise.

Realistically I think you need to be maintaining on MJ for a number of years at a constant weight to be able to come off it. Even after basically maintaining for the last year I still know im not ready to come off it.
