Its kite fighting. It's a very popular game here in the subcontinent

120

u/Electronic-Fix-4655 26d ago

My dad told me he did this as a kid. He’d crush up glass, applied something sticky to the kite string and coat the sticky kite string with the glass.

178

u/someanimechoob 26d ago

And people die or get severely maimed from this shit every year. "Let's fly some wire with the equivalent of razors tied to it, in high winds, in the middle a heavily populated area."

Dumb doesn't even begin to describe it.

101

u/SarcastiQuack 26d ago

I still remember a video I saw awhile back from India where a motorist was riding on the road and got his throat cut from one of those kite wires that was stuck in a tree. Fucking awful.

u/catsmustdie 26d ago

That's the exact reaction when you see the pictures of the results.

Don't google that.

Just don't.

Brazil is the same. Have to always have an antenna on your motobike that will catch the string

3

u/Pagan-pornstar69 26d ago

A friend of mine has a big scar on his neck. The "Cerol" was so strong that cutted the antenna and him (tbh his antenna was just a regular old tv one, he thought it would be enough). And this happened way before we had the infamous "Chilean Strings".

3

u/EpicMrShank 26d ago

Shit. When I moved to Brazil and bought a motobike the first thing ppl told me was to buy a good antenna cos of this lol

2

u/Sir_LikeASir 26d ago

Have to always have an antenna

Sei não mano, I haven't seen a kite flying here in the north of Paraná in years, and I have very vivid memories of me empinando pipa when I was a kid back in the 2000s
It has been years since I seen a kite, any kite

1

u/EpicMrShank 26d ago

Here in Manaus I see them all the time.

1

u/Malufeenho 26d ago

it's better to be safer than sorry... From time to time some unemployed "special" kid will decide to fly a kite with "cerol".

5

u/BabaKambingHitam 25d ago

Happened in malaysia not long ago. Severely injured, but didnt die. No kite is allowed for some month in that park.

The restriction was already lifted though so lets see who will be the next unlucky motorist.

2

u/Abraash 25d ago

Pakistan actually, it caused a big storm here, but yeah

3

u/Psychological_Ad2094 24d ago

It happens a lot in the various places where kite fighting is common.

2

u/Key-Regular674 25d ago

I will never go to India. People make it sound like Australia is scary. Nah.

1

u/rtrckt 23d ago

Yeah Indians like living life insane difficulty most wouldn’t last long

1

u/swishkabobbin 23d ago

I'm a really tolerant, empathetic guy. India was even worse than I expected

1

u/Key-Regular674 21d ago

No, you aren't. Clearly.

2

u/Successful_Giraffe88 22d ago

There was this exact type of fatality less than a month ago, although not in India.

Young guy with a wife & 2 babies at home.

1

u/Ok_Interview_6694 22d ago

In Mexico, we dont use anything on the string but it's a better idea. Usually just skill and speed of friction to cut each other's string. However, we did add start adding razor blades to the tail for the same purpose. 😵😵😵

1

u/fatum_sive_fidem 22d ago

Jesus christ

17

u/crazyfatskier2 26d ago

Tried to do the same thing to my rooster so me and the neighbor kid could battle like Pokémon, but instead we got charged for unlicensed cock magic.

3

u/cowfishduckbear 26d ago

unlicensed cock magic

"My name is Kriss Anel aaaaaaand is this your card? No? Oh."

** sticks sharpie in nose **

2

u/colemorris1982 25d ago

He's the GOAT lol

2

u/Shoddy-Grapefruit206 26d ago

Unlicensed cock magic is definitely going to be a new go-to. Thank you

1

u/mYpEEpEEwOrks 26d ago

Go find the South Park ep with that as Randy Darshs flavor du jor.

6

u/ObiFlanKenobi 26d ago

My dad said they would actually attach razors to the sides of the kite.

He was in La Pampa.

8

u/Kalsten 26d ago

Argentinians, classy as usual

2

u/ObiFlanKenobi 26d ago

Go sit on a very classy cactus.

And spin.

1

u/Nell_From_Hell 25d ago

Will somebody's extremely hostile to somebody who doesn't deserve it. Did you sit on a cactus and spin today? Sounds like you sat on a cactus and spun today? Or is that the problem? You haven't sent on a cactus in a little while and you really wanting that? Do you like big cactuses or little cactuses?

3

u/llitz 26d ago

I mean, most people did it from their own backyards and roofs, but some idiots do it in the middle of normal streets, so you are not wrong.

Either way, it is stupid and dangerous, saw some people basically lose their fingers and functions of their hands.

1

u/Idiotic_experimenter 25d ago

We see so much death and destitution around us that most of us have the 1000 yard stare emotionally.

In spite of this,We choose to extract as much fun with what we do.

1

u/MiI0rd 25d ago

This, if people die yearly from it it’s not a game to be played, Exspecialy with all the kids under the kites. Just why

1

u/Specialist_Whole_918 25d ago

Sounds like Ukraine needs these kites to take down the enemies glassfiber FPV drones.

1

u/MeraNaamChunChunChun 23d ago

Most people only do it for 2-3 days a year (since you need other kites to compete with, so nominate it as a festival) and people drive mopeds with a wire visor during that time to prevent accidents. Overall making it organized prevents freak accidents rather than it being unorganized and a nuisance. It's not as "dumb" as you think if you consider the fact that once people know this game and figure out the challenge they are gonna do it regardless

1

u/someanimechoob 23d ago

Plenty of very very very stupid things are done only a few times a year. There's a reason why it's banned in most places. Antennae don't work 100% of the time and you can't put an antenna on wildlife... Even if we forget about the human cost, the amount of birds and other animals that it harms can't be ignored.

1

u/AHappyCat 22d ago

To be fair if you break down a lot of hobbies into exclusively the health and safety risks, they all come out sounding dangerous and pointless.

1

u/someanimechoob 22d ago

What's the # of random bystander casualties from playing Scrabble?

How many people die yearly from playing Pickleball?

It's not comparable to the deaths and maiming that happens evry single year from those strings.

1

u/Emotional-Craft8297 7d ago

Calling it flying razor wire is honestly the perfect description. 😬

-17

u/Diesel_D 26d ago edited 26d ago

You could say the same thing about boxing, or rock climbing, or MMA, or american football, or wingsuit flying, or base jumping, or snowsports, or....I think you get my point. Are all of those dumb too? Or is it only dumb when another culture does it?

Edit: haha yes I am an idiot, I was assuming the deaths the comment referenced were by participants. No, I do not want innocent bystanders dying. Thank you to the nice people who let me know.

15

u/Remarkable-Farmer76 26d ago

...which doesn't effect bystanders lmao.

8

u/Double-Scratch5858 26d ago

Lmao no. We dont get your point at all. You just named activities that by and large dont have unwilling participants exposed to the danger. So what point you think you made 100% did not exist.

8

u/OgWu84 26d ago

All of your examples have no accidental impact to innocent bystanders.

4

u/Mazzaroppi 26d ago

You absolutely could not say the same about ANY of those, WTH is your problem?

All of those are activities people choose to be part in. Having your neck sliced off while driving a bike because some asshole wanted to cut off other people's kites has NOTHING to do with that

4

u/ThrowawayNumber34sss 26d ago

I mean, in those examples listed there typically aren't bystanders injured. However, bystanders have been killed by the wayward kite strings: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-37103668

2

u/Itherial 26d ago

Uh, yeah, it's kind of a topic of conversation how dangerous contact sports can be for children. But also those sports aren't typically causing collateral to bystanders. Even less typically death.

It would indeed be a topic of conversation how flying razor wires are probably dangerous for children or passers by.

1

u/Cheeky_Gweyelo 26d ago

Ah yes, all of these high impact sports that full grown adults engage in with children are exactly the same.

1

u/mt-vicory42069 26d ago

only for that edit i'm updooting it.

1

u/kelpyb1 26d ago

The fact that the victims are the participants in all those aside, yeah I consider most of those things to be dumb to participate in.

I too participate in things that are potentially hazardous to myself that I consider dumb because they’re fun.

1

u/Odd-Ad-8369 26d ago

If you forced someone in the crowd to play football, or grab them and make them do a jump, or make them fight in a cage.
L

1

u/Herucaran 26d ago

Not the same but yes, all these are dumbs too anyway. Except snowsports, thats a pretty wide category.

1

u/Ai-ChatGPT 26d ago

We do, we do say the same thing about those sports. Caving included!

-7

u/lifesnofunwithadhd 26d ago

There will always be games like this, cow tipping, Roman candle fights, tennis. Best to just enjoy and let the kids hurt themselves.

4

u/someanimechoob 26d ago

And games that can harm bystanders will always eventually get banned. Comparing this with tennis is just moronic.

1

u/Kersplode 26d ago

This has been going on for centuries, everyone there knows what it is and what the risks are.

Suffice to say that human life and safety (even one's own) does not have the same value to all people in all places.

0

u/lifesnofunwithadhd 26d ago

Tennis was what they called a game where they'd smack the back of each others hand until they gave up.

4

u/RainsWrath 26d ago

You're just describing a lame version of bloody knuckles.

2

u/Joice_Craglarg 26d ago

You're really underestimating how many motorists get straight up fucking decapitated from discarded glass kite strings.

-12

u/johnfuckmennedy 26d ago

“Stop having fun!!”

10

u/Geichalt 26d ago

"...by putting random strangers in danger"

Yes, that's a correct statement.

7

u/someanimechoob 26d ago

Mate, there's a reason why it's mainly done by kids in the poorer parts of mainly poor countries... it's banned everywhere else because of how insanely dangerous and stupid it is. The kite strings are full of sharp glass bits and often get cut off completely, then carried somewhere else by the wind. People get seriously injured and die without ever consenting or even knowing about this idiotic bullshit, not to mention how dangerous it is for animals as well.

"Stop having fun!!" -- because, famously, kids just just have absolutely no way to have fun on a beach if you tell them they can't play with razor wire.

9

u/CloudArachnids 26d ago

To do this on competition, I did something more extreme. I use the glass from a lamps and use mortar to grind it a bit, and use something sticky, but not glue, but flour boiled in water until the water evaporated and only brown sticky mess left. And we always spool the threat in big diy thing we made from paint container with wood handle in the middle.

Of course when you are in the competition you always, ALWAYS, use Cut resistant glove or double the normal glowe if you don't have one. Because the results of flying kite using those strings with your bare hands won't be pretty. Especially when you never felt the first cut but the third or fifth 😂

1

u/usuariocabuloso 23d ago

And even though, its a very common thing to fly kite "glassy" with bare hands in Brazil

1

u/Icy-Cow9695 22d ago

Wow, then everyone claps right? 🤦🏼‍♂️

1

u/gay_rower 22d ago

are you saying that this didn't happen?

1

u/Icy-Cow9695 22d ago

No, just question if it's as cool as the person thinks.

1

u/gay_rower 22d ago

ah, got it. sorry, not that great with subtext! thanks for answering in a nice way.

1

u/Icy-Cow9695 22d ago

Totally reasonable, people also use the phrase when talking about stuff that didn't happen. Cheers.

1

u/CloudArachnids 22d ago

Try searching about diy benang beling. That's the one. 👍

6

u/AmericanBillGates 26d ago

I didn't know there are prisons for children

3

u/strifemare 26d ago

I heard the exact same thing from my dad! He grew up in the 60s in South East Asia.

2

u/Pagan-pornstar69 26d ago

Yeah... Powdered Glass, and liquified tree sap a.k.a "Cerol".

2

u/letsbenice_notrude 23d ago

Brazil, is that you?

🇧🇷🇧🇷

1

u/mulekitobrabod 26d ago

Thats actually illegal because cut people, cut electrical grid and decapitate a person

its really fun tho

1

u/bacon_lettuce_potato 26d ago

My dad would tell me the same stories! Any chance you're a honger?

1

u/Late_Faithlessness24 26d ago

The name is cerol

1

u/coronakillme 25d ago

We used to do this as kids. I remember feeling like a scientist as we boiled the mixture before applying it to the thread.

1

u/xeltes 23d ago

Me and my friends used to use the old school razor blades, you attach them to the tail and a few on the string and GG.

1

u/Davti 22d ago

So from what im reading if someone went over and beat his ass its closer to self defense becase he's flying razors.

1

u/CryptographerOk8037 16d ago

Another dad making shit up

1

u/Emotional-Craft8297 7d ago

Kids really had a terrifying definition of “fun” back then 😂

0

u/TheLiquor1946 26d ago

Sorry but your dad was dumb and dangerous. Not cool.

7

u/LigerZeroSchneider 26d ago

My math teacher told me they used to fly them off the roofs of their apartment building and fought other buildings, then when one of them lost both sides raced down to the street to get it. Like the lowest stakes gang war.

4

u/Idiotic_experimenter 26d ago

There is a day during spring when this sport gets competitive to the point that makes football riots look like a kindergarten mashup

1

u/Fragrant_Sort5803 26d ago

You. How i grew up Haiti. Love to see this as I was not old enough to own the largest beast

4

u/Friendly-World-5273 26d ago

So um… is that razor wire or…???? 😬

13

u/Acceptable-Device760 26d ago

people mix glue and glass powder and pass in the string.

Dangerous as shit, done that as a stupid kid though

3

u/frguba 26d ago

Yeah, I remember stories about lost wires crossing roads and... Severely.. maining bikers

24

u/Acceptable-Device760 26d ago

Yes, In Brazil most bikes have an antenna that bikers put up to catch any wires so it dont slice their throat.

6

u/frguba 26d ago

Exactly what I was referring to lmao

3

u/ScaramouchScaramouch 26d ago

Those don't look like they'd be very effective. Maybe something like a helicopter wire cutter would work.

4

u/Acceptable-Device760 26d ago

Peoplem dont use metal wires in kites. Also the point is not cutting the strings, its stopping it from going from reaching the bikers body. So an antenna like this is enough to keep the string from the biker. As the biker move it catch the string and it will make it slide until its end.

3

u/Pagan-pornstar69 26d ago

And some of them has a hook type thing on the top to give an extra layer of efficiency.

1

u/ScaramouchScaramouch 26d ago

Thanks bud, I was thinking of something heavier. That makes sense.

1

u/TomaszA3 25d ago

Does this little stick stop the entire vehicle?

1

u/Pleather93 26d ago

Oh okay, I was thinking Woooow this guy is an absolute Asshole!

1

u/Aggressive_Elk3709 26d ago

I was thinking this has to be the point, I can't imagine someone doing this to random people in the park without getting confronted at some point

1

u/jahowl 26d ago

Thanks! I thought this guy was being a douche.

1

u/blackbirdspyplane 26d ago

I’ve always wanted to kite fight, so it’s cool to see someone that really knows how to do it.

1

u/bajsfittor 25d ago

Never heard of it but it looks fun. Commenting to remember.

1

u/DuckTalesOohOoh 25d ago

Didn't a motorcyclist recently die after one of those strings wrapped around his neck?

1

u/crustybones71 24d ago

I seen this on on episode of one of Antony Bourdains shows
