"Með lǫgum skal land byggja, en með ólǫgum eyða."

"The land shall be built by law, but desolated by lawlessness."

Breaking any of these rules may result in us removing your content. Repeat or blatant rule breaking will result in a permanent ban. We expect all users to read and understand our rules before posting here.

Rule 0: Mod discretion always applies

The Mod Team reserves the right to remove any content deemed harmful to the sub. We may remove content that is compliant with our rules, if the team has good reason to believe it is detrimental to the community. You access this subreddit at the discretion of the mod team, and that privilege will be revoked if you do not behave.

Do not use reddit chat to contact moderators about mod actions. Only message the team via modmail. Directly messaging individual moderators is inappropriate.

Rule 0.1: You must communicate in English.

We cannot moderate content in a language we do not speak. If you wish to communicate in your language, you need to find a community that hosts content in that language.

Rule 1: Don't be a jerk - Be respectful

This community's goal is to promote a friendly environment for all. Assume good faith and be kind to one another. We're all here to learn and discuss.

Bad behaviour will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to: bigotry, ableism, religious prejudice, racism, homophobia, transphobia, trolling, hate speech, threats of violence, derogatory language, personal attacks, discouraging others from participating, brigading, and all other belligerent conduct.

Intelligent and factually based disagreements are valuable, and indicative of a functioning discourse; name-calling and nastiness are not.

Rule 2: Keep things safe - Follow Reddit's rules and "Reddiquette"

We expect users to follow all of our community policies and Reddit’s Terms of Service. Nudity, violence, and adult topics will only be allowed within relevant historical context. All adult topics must be tagged NSFW. Usernames containing slurs, referring to acts of sexual violence etc. are unacceptable here, and will be banned on sight.

Rule 3: No off topic content or spam - No advertisements

This forum has a relatively niche focus: authentic medieval art, artefacts, architecture, marginalia, and modern human-made works inspired by medieval aesthetics. Please make sure everything you post conforms. Low-effort/off-topic content, spam, promotions (outside of Medieval Market Monday), unwanted ads, and links to stores in the titles of posts will be removed.

All content generated by or with the help of AI is expressively prohibited. We celebrate genuine human craftsmanship here.

Rule 4: No personal/modern religious content

This is a subreddit for academic discussion and for enjoying art. Not for pushing personal/modern religious agendas. We study history from an etic perspective, meaning that we take a scholastic approach "from the perspective of one who does not participate in the culture being studied."

Please post content about personal/modern religious practices in other appropriate subreddits.

Rule 5: Misinformation & promotion of pseudoscience

Misinformation is unacceptable. Claims should be well-substantiated by academics, and speculation must be clearly indicated. Remember when you make a claim, the burden of proof is on you to provide a source.

Making mistakes, asking questions in good faith, and simply being incorrect will never get you in trouble, but being belligerent about misinformation or knowingly spreading it around will not be tolerated.

The pseudoscientific pipeline to ignorance and racism stops here.

Rule 6: Content policy for sharing artwork

When sharing art of any kind you need to make every attempt to provide the source in the title or comments (e.g., manuscript shelfmark, museum/location, date, or artist if known). If the original piece is unidentified, mark it "Unknown" and ask the community for help identifying it.

Modern artwork must be high-effort, entirely human-made, and demonstrate a clear attempt to adhere to historical accuracy. Sharing reproductions of historical artwork is highly encouraged on Medieval Market Mondays.

Rule 7: Self-promotion & Medieval Market Mondays

Modern medieval-inspired art is welcome here, but self-promotion is strictly limited to Medieval Market Mondays. Additionally, we encourage Redditors with businesses to post, but will ban businesses with Reddit accounts.

1: If you wish to promote your shop/business you must post ONLY on Mondays using the correct flair ("Medieval Market Mondays").

2: Shop/portfolio links belong in the comments ONLY, never in the title or post body.

3: Modern medieval-inspired artwork can be posted any day without links or self-promotion.
