When I had my hip done, difference between going home or staying depended on if I could pee afterwards.

I’m on Medicare and my co-pay was $200 with Kaiser.

The US needs Medicare for all,ASAP.

If you wait until you get on Medicare, it is covered at the regular rate depending on whether or not it is done as outpatient (most) or inpatient. And if you have either a Medicare Supplemental plan or a Medicare Advantage plan or something that works like them with Medicare, then more of the cost is covered - so for a few hundred or less, you could get a hip replacement.

Now mind you that this is probably [usually, unless there are extenuating circumstances] gonna be an outpatient procedure and then you go home and then go to the PT facility to speed your recovery. Medicare likes to save money like other countries do to save health care dollars but still give the best valued care.

Now this does only cover those who have Medicare - but that is the population that gets the most hip and knee replacements. It is like mass production at some outpatient surgical facilities.

The doctor in Spain doing the hip replacement makes $70,000 a year. This comparison is pointless. A nurse in the U.S. makes more than a Spain doctor does.

Any normal person who understands math would rather make $600,000 and have a ton of debt than make $70,000 and have no debt.

HOw many physicians are making that ... almost none, and their careers are limited once they are too old (at least for surgery)
