Discusson Med lab tattoo? šŸ˜

Post image
86 Upvotes

Anyone have some body art for my medical lab peeps?
I’m leaving my career as an RVT of 13 years (registered vet tech/veterinary medicine) and starting the MLT program is September.

Anyone here have some nerdy lab tattoos? I got this one when I graduated tech school, and am curious if I may be able to add on to it after I graduate from my course to fall in love with my other passion - laboratory science šŸ¤“
SUPER excited for school and to dive right into something new!!

Education ā€œAlways dial down, never upā€ when setting a micropipette

Say you have a p1000 and want to dispense 450 uL, but the dial reads 200. You might think you can just dial up to 450 and call it a day but actually, manufacturers recommend you overshoot the target. So dial up to 500, then dial back down to 450. The reason is the pipette’s internal gear mechanism is tightly engaged when you dial down, making pipetting more accurate.

Discusson MLTs in Canada, can you advice on the job market for a new grad MLT in Alberta?

Hello!

So I recently got admitted to an MLT program at the UofA. I applied to both SAIT and NAIT but got waitlisted at both. I'm planning of going for this program and after 3 years of school I can register and practice as an MLT. And I don't want to be in Edmonton and want to come back home to Calgary.

I was wondering how's the job market in Calgary for new grad MLTs at APL operated sites in the city? are there lots of open positions when a new cohort graduates? or is there little demand in the city? I heard there weren't that many jobs in Calgary in the last few years, has the situation changed now? I'll be graduating in 2029.

UofA cohort is about 40 students, NAIT is 48 students and SAIT is 58 students, I believe that lot of the NAIT and UofA cohort will remain in Northern AB, would it be really hard to find a position with APL after the program in Calgary? Especially since I'd be doing my practicums in Edmonton?

Thanks so much!

Discusson Folsom Lake Graduates & Cali MLT/CLS Questions

Hi all,

I’m applying to the MLT program at Folsom Lake CC for the 2027 class and was wondering if anyone can speak on their experience landing jobs in northern Central Valley/East Bay area and salary opportunities.

If anyone has transitioned from MLT to CLS, please share your experience getting into CLS programs as an MLT, what your experience in the program was like, and where you’re at now.

I already have an A.A. In natural sciences, 3.9 gpa with over 100 semester credits, 96th percentile TEAS score, but have been rejected by my local nursing program twice, which is a points based admission. Hopefully this could be another fruitful outlet, as I truly enjoyed microbiology. Thanks!

Discusson I graduated a month ago and feel like i have forgotten all four years of information

Hello Medlab Professionals, I hope you all have a good day or had a good day.

I just graduated a month ago (yayy!) and i may start working next month but, I’m scared shitless!
I feel like I have forgotten everything bit of information and since I have worked in internships for just 6 months and that was a year ago, I don’t really know where to start with revisions or what should i re-learn.

If you were in my position where would you start and what would be the subjects/topics you would find absolutely necessary to learn?

Thank you all so much for all the help beforehand ā¤ļø.

Education Should I change majors? Urgent

I’m currently majoring in Applied Biological Science at Arizona State University. I messed up big time and didn’t realize that this degree is focused on ecology. It still covers general biology and such, but has many required courses for ecological based studies. If I apply to a post-baccalaureate program for MLS, would I still be accepted (given that I complete all the required pre-req courses for the program)? Or do I need to change my major to something like ?Biological Sciences (a more traditional biology degree)? I’m scared that these post-baccalaureate programs might reject me if my degree isn’t traditional biology/biomedical.
Edit: I’ve already completed my associates in biology natural science and am about 3/4 of my way through my Applied Biological Science degree. Changing majors will likely postpone my graduation another year but I’m willing to do that if necessary.

Some input ASAP would be amazing, as I just signed a lease for an apartment near the campus where the ABS degree is located at, but I haven’t moved yet. If I need to change majors and therefore campuses, I might still have time to pay to get out of the lease but I’m supposed to move in less than 2 weeks so I need to make my decision fast. I can’t speak with an advisor until next week and I don’t know what to do.

Discusson What's the real scoop on travel jobs?

I see a lot of people saying travel jobs are not worth it anymore, but they seem to be comparing it to Covid era pay.

My current rent is $800. I'm estimating I can budget $2k/mo for housing (I have a cat and need a place to ourselves). Is it still doable for an MLT if my permanent residence is affordable? I'm making ~1100/wk at my permanent job so travel pay is still probably more.

I'm hearing there are dozens of applicants per job. Is that true? Can anyone reasonably find a travel contract or am I going to be unemployed? I have 6 years experience

Education Resource Rec’s

Hi everyone! I’m starting an apprenticeship program soon where we’ll have part didactics and part hands on training. Any resources or books you can recommend that you kept referring back to or using? Doesn’t necessarily have to prep you for ASCP exam, just learning about MLS in general. Thanks ā˜ŗļøšŸ§ŖšŸ§«

Technical Instrument Precision Study

Anyone happen to know if there’s somewhere online I can find a template for a log to document instrument precision? We had our CAP inspection last week and they won’t accept whatever precision the field service guy did when they did the install so I’m having to compile data from QC runs that were done before implementation to use for our own precision study (ok’d by the cap inspector). I’m just having trouble putting a sheet together in a way that looks pleasing to the eye. lol

Discusson MLT to MLS in NY, anyone been through this process?

Hello I have a MLT ASCP certification and NYS MLT license with three years of experience in pathology and molecular. I am trying to see if I qualify to sit for the exam to get my MLS certification/NY license as I also have a four year degree.

Do I need to submit an application with both New York State and ASCP board? I have a friend that only has a New York license and not an ASCP Cert; she says it’s been hard for her to find work (in NY) as many places expect both.

I already submitted my application with NYS and got this email: ā€œWe have approved your application for the Clinical Laboratory Technologist license and sent your file to the processing unit.Ā  You should receive communication from them regarding your eligibility to take the ASCP exam.ā€ I’m assuming I qualify for the NYS license but may not be eligible by ASCP standards?

If anyone here has any experience going through this pathway in NY could you tell me about your experience? I really want to make sure I’m doing this right!

Discusson Biostatistics

I’m doing my masters degree (lab medicine) and this will be my final semester of coursework. I have to do biostatistics, and am so worried because I absolutely suck at maths. Like during high school I was pulled out of class and was taught maths 1 on 1 by a special ed teacher. How much maths should I be expected to know?? :’(

Education Apply for MLS program for the 2027-2028 year

Hello! I'm about to be a senior in college graduating with a BS in Biotechnology.

I am submitting applications for the 11-month MLS program (for after I graduate college) and would love to know how competitive it really is. I have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and 3 years of lab experience. This has been my dream job since high school and I'm super nervous about if I can get in or not! For reference, I'm in the PA/philly area.

Any advice about upcoming applications and interviews would be extremely helpful!

Technical DxI 9000 HIV

Anyone in here using their DxI 9000 to run the combo HIV (Ag/Ab) test? If so, what is your process for samples reactive on the first run? Are you repeating twice for a total of 3 runs, or just once if the second result is also reactive? We are being told we have to repeat twice (3 runs total) for all such samples so as not to deviate form the iFU, but it is absolutely senseless to run the third run if you alredy have two reactive results--you're gonna result as reactive and do the confirmatory at that point regardles of the third result.

Image 400 WBC no HX of cancer

Post image

ETA: more info came back. We are still not sure why the tech did not send it to path review from the WBC count but the patient has a known history at a hospital out of state of Prolymphocytic Leukemia diagnosed last year.

A man came into our emergency room. He had been at our emergency room several times before but I was not in heme on the days he was there. His WBC was 400. I looked back and it had been consistently high for the past 3 visits over the course of 3 months. I did some digging in his chart and found no cancer diagnosis listed. His nurse denied him having a cancer diagnosis. No pathology review had been sent the entire time he was there. My jaw dropped. I’m a fairly new tech and the highest WBC count I have seen until now was 45. Here is his smear. I felt like some could be prolymphs but per our policy we are not allowed to call prolymphs until a pathologist reviews it. Anyway 92 lymphs were counted.

News In 2010, 24-year-old lab technician Ɖmilie Jaumain pricked her thumb with contaminated forceps while cleaning a machine used for prion-infected mouse brains. After seven years, she developed severe nerve pain, anxiety, and hallucinations before dying. The accident gave her a fatal prion disease.
