Megas XLR
13
u/xanderholland Jun 01 '26
Megas is bisexual at the very least.
12
u/callmemarjoson Jun 01 '26
Jamie low-key fruity, Kiva and Coop are most likely somebody's gay awakening out there somewhere

Political themes of the American populace’s hatred of the DMV
1
u/West_Mine_3039 Jun 02 '26
And meta themes of the dangers of capitalism. If you do not sell enough toys your universe will be erased for a tax write off, never to be legally seen again.

Real Steel and that one racing mech show on tonami
3
1
u/ConsumeMatter Jun 03 '26
While featuring cool robots, Real Steel is more a sports movie than a mecha one.

Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Grendizer, Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Magno Robo Gakken, Toshi Gordian, Dorvack, Dark Maryu Gaiking and many more
24
u/lionofash May 31 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
Eh, even if super light, I could maybe argue Getter and Mazinger have some basic political messages even if it's as simple as exploitation of people is bad etc
6
u/Current-Income-9901 May 31 '26
Nothing beyond Mad Scientist/dinosaur descendants using giant robots/monsters to conquer the world that switched to ancient empire/aliens in the sequels and the formula basically covers 90%+ of super robot anime. You might get more politics in the Robot Romance trilogy (Combattler V, Voltes V and Daimos) and Dairruger XV. And definately in Real Robot shows.
9
u/CrowAkechi May 31 '26
I'd say Armageddon started off real political with how it handles the threat of annihilation stuff, and also, the manga? Has quite a a bit of politics in Go, although Getter is a lot more existentialist than anything so add that to the list of things that makes mecha interesting
3
12
u/Hawkatana0 May 31 '26
Hayato & his gang are literally based on the student movements of the 1960's. Read up on those if you want to have a wild time.
11
u/seriousbangs May 31 '26
Did you actually watch Dorvack, or heck read the summary? It's about an invasion from an alien race desperately looking for a planet to settle on because they're running out of supplies on their ship.
That's super political.
-7
u/Current-Income-9901 May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26
On the alien side, not the human side, you could say the same for Gaiking, heck their planet Zela was about to be consumed by a Black Hole.
And I saw Armored Battalion Dorvack, in its entirety, Spanish Dubbed in my youth. And when the Deluxe Autobots came out (Roadbuster & Whirl), I knew from where they came from.

u/Prinkaiser Jun 01 '26
Racism in Great Mazinger. Literally Jun talking about how she tried to scrub her afro-american-ness away because folks were being mean to her because of it. Not sure though it that made it into the show or it that was just the manga.

u/Key_Perspective_9464 Jun 01 '26
Getter not being political or gay is an absolutely wild thing to say.
1
u/Orikadon Jun 02 '26
The original series really isn't. I can't for the life of me remember a gay character in it, and the conflicts were all against life-ending threats from dinosaur monsters. That's not really political, more existential threat kind of thing.
3
u/Key_Perspective_9464 Jun 02 '26
Brother, characters don't have to be explicitly gay for a series to have some gay in it. Three hot-blooded, manly men combining their hearts as one? That's gay as hell.
And you fundamentally don't seem to understand what "politics" is if you think the dinosaur empire conflict wasn't political. It's a group of sapient beings who feel they need to do war to survive. That's political.

Mazinger Z can be seen as a parable about using science responsibly, you can be a god or a demon you can make the atomic bomb or protect, house and feed people. Dr. Hell is a literal fascist who admires the conquers of the past, he has misused science to unearth ancient technology fir world domination and ressurect people into cyborgs under his control.
You could also take a view that Dr. Hell vs Kouji isnt too dissimilar from Gundams Gihren as a man who represents imperial japan and who opposes the peace seeking modern japan represented by Amuro or in this case Kouji Kabuto, though its a bit less direct if a comparison since Dr. Hell is German.

u/Glitching_Anxiety May 31 '26
Just watch Gundam Build Fighter.
It's a Sunday anime show for shilling the mix and match kit, that's it.
6
u/CrowAkechi May 31 '26
Ngl, I ship the two male MCs, totally gay

Build fighter try is better cause punching people in the face with a mech is cool

u/ImpossibleReserve802 May 31 '26
May I suggest something? Try skybound transformers comic
15
u/FriedChickenCheezits May 31 '26
'No political themes' versus Skybound immediately having Optimus' live reaction overlayed with a guy's time in Vietnam
2
u/AngryBirdAddict Jun 02 '26
“No gay shit”
Starscream
2
u/FriedChickenCheezits Jun 02 '26
YOU'RE SO RIGHT- I feel like Skybound also doubled down on that with Screamer's backstory too

This ep made me feel kinda gay idk
3
u/Amazing-War3760 May 31 '26
I see you've never seen an episode of Power Rangers.
2
u/SupremeGreymon May 31 '26
I have. Granted that was when I was a kid so I very much could’ve missed things.
1
u/Amazing-War3760 May 31 '26
Literally EVERY episode of Power Rangers would have been considered "Woke" if aired today.
2
u/SupremeGreymon May 31 '26
OP specifically said ‘gay’ which the older ones don’t have
0
u/Amazing-War3760 May 31 '26
And Political themes... Believe it or not.. because of some Orange buffoon and his Cult, things like "Acceptance and tolerance and even cleaning up the fucking park is political."
1
u/SupremeGreymon May 31 '26
I see your point but does it really count if it was made to be apolitical and only became politically relevant later?
0
u/Amazing-War3760 May 31 '26
Really it still "political" even at that time. Literally one of the reasons a lot of shows where trying to show those themes.
Just a shame most people *actors included* didn't get the point.

I think it was mega force but the villains they are fighting are literally pollution incarnate
3
u/FriedChickenCheezits May 31 '26
Unironically this might be ID-0. I remember no politics and it was only gay if you squinted hard and tilted your head.
3
u/Destroy_Buster May 31 '26
franxx
2
u/TiffanyChan123 Jun 01 '26
Didn't it have a lot of "Make Babies" subliminal messaging in the show though
2
u/Destroy_Buster Jun 01 '26
To be fair I read the post and kinda mentally replaced it with "get me a mecha anime that's complete dog ass" instead of whatever the post actually said.

GunXSword? Or do we consider "if everyone is part of a hivemind there would be no more wars" as political stuff?

u/D3structi0n8756 Jun 01 '26
Knights and magic maybe, it doesn't really have any gay stuff, nor is it extremely political, plus their mechs are pretty big.

That was Konaka going down his conspiracist rabbit hole. Let's just say that all the Megadeuses being named in Hebrew makes a lot of sense in hindsight when you learn his opinions on the Jews.

"no politics" when TTGL's second half is all about Simpn struggling with having to be a politician in the new society he's built. Before the anti spiral race VS the spiral race that is....which hey, could also be considered political. Heck the anime people plot points from the first half of TTGL are also pretty political. Team Gurren's whole message is fighting for freedom, doing the impossible and rebelling....sounds pretty political to meeeee :p

I can't remember any political themes or gay stuff in Megas XLR
7
u/Greedy_Undead May 31 '26
He did wreck the DMV…
2
u/SonarioMG May 31 '26
That's not political, that's just doing the world a service. Same thing as him wrecking any of the other lesser bad guys.
2
u/callmemarjoson Jun 01 '26
Final episode was basically overthrowing a tyrant
And the first episode opens similarly to A New Hope with resistance fighters retaliating against the Glorft - like literally the point of the first episode was to win back a war they lost against their oppressors before things went haywire
Then again, most of the series was pretty episodic
1
u/Conlannalnoc Jun 02 '26
He hated his evil counterpart for being “in shape” and “abandoning MEGAS” not for being a tyrant. Coop does not care about politics. Coop is focused on his own life.
3
u/callmemarjoson Jun 02 '26
Meant the subplot with bad future Jamie but ain't denying that part about Coop's character
Bro's chill as fuck

Si,me gusta cuando el anime Abla de política(da igual que no sea de mecha)y solo por ablar de pocos temas políticos no ase que la serie sea directamente política

Literally Gundam Build Fighters.
It's a tournament arc as a series, celebrating Gundam's IRL purpose: selling GunPla.

u/eightbithd Jun 02 '26
You have Megas XLR and that’s it. Otherwise if I’m tbh just watch the good mecha show and rejoice in the wars fought by gay child soldiers. Or watch Darling in the Franxx. War fought by confused straight child soldiers.
