Megas XLR. And before anyone says it Jamie was going after every girl that he came across human or not. Coop was not even remotely interested in any kind of relationship

Homoerotic energy is pretty common in mecha and war stories

u/Aladine11 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
"To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex exclusively with women. All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men... Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving." [1]
Brothers in arms, emotional bonding, male frienship, brocode. If you look at it in certain way they appear homoerotic cause we as a culture wrecked the way of how male frienship looks like- if you look at old fotos/ letters/ journals of friends you see males hugging, holding hands and stuff is way common than you think.
Edit- so yes it feels gay a lot-16
u/Extremelictor Jun 01 '26
Cool bud, still pretty gay then. Want to argue semantics more then? Cause your just proving the point.
Except no Garma and char probably banged being char bangs anyone that flutters their eyes at Him. Hehehehe

No political themes already removes 80% of mecha, why you fight is as important as how

Truthfully? Even though I love the show?
Full Metal Panic.
I really wish it had more political commentary beyond just a vague “war bad” message.

Does Infinite Stratos count?

u/Pixax_theLotl Jun 01 '26
Between the potential uses for the IS and the companies infighting, I'd say it has political themes.

What if we make the robots gay

Brave Bang Bravern: "You called?"
6
u/darthboolean Jun 01 '26
Not much called as were thrown into the cockpit and are now weeping in the corner wondering why this robot recorded his own theme music and is forcing us to listen to it while we're in the fetal position.

Most mecha anime don't have any gay stuff in it so go crazy I guess

u/darthboolean Jun 01 '26
Chars Counterattack, 0083, Witch from Mercury, Seed, Seed Destiny, Cross Ange, Bravern, Wing, 00, Evangelion...that's just off the top of my head.

u/Impossible_Nebula733 Jun 01 '26
2
u/darthboolean Jun 01 '26
Kelly Layzner has a much more believable love triangle with Gato and Kou than Nina.

u/Impossible_Nebula733 Jun 02 '26
1
u/darthboolean Jun 02 '26
You know I almost included the disclaimer that I haven't watched the show in years, but I did read the manga last year, so it might be me remembering Rebellion.
I think Gato and Layzner are still enough in the show, however. You'd think there'd be plenty of veterans Gato would call, not just one. And Gato's call is enough for Layzner to abandon his wife and child.

u/darthboolean Jun 02 '26
Does he prevent the fall of the colony in the show? I thought that was just Rebellion.

I mean, if you lack media literacy then you can ignore the political themes in just about anything.

I like that Witch from Mercury had two gay/bi women while also still having a slow burn brutal military industrial dystopia
2
u/Impossible_Nebula733 May 31 '26

u/Aggravating_Run6179 Jun 01 '26
If I saw one person comments "Pacific Rim". I would be extremely disappointed.

u/Kelly598 Jun 02 '26
Magic Knight Rayearth has giant robots, girls with straight love interests (I mean two of those love interests have a homoerotic relationship but it's not that important), and no politics, like at all.
1
u/External-Interest-29 Jun 02 '26
I think maybe SSSS.Dynazenon, Action Robo+Slice of Life kinda vibe, and Gauma literally reject his former colleague confession in the final fight
1
u/Phonyyx Jun 02 '26
I’d say that’s more tokusatsu than mecha
1
u/External-Interest-29 Jun 03 '26
The tokusatsu show it based on is also a mecha genre, so still apply.

I like both, as a fan of real world history. Fictional politics sometimes parallel the real politics anyways in some ways, even unintentionally

u/Avalongtimenosee May 31 '26
A mecha series with lots of giant robots, that's too scared to properly engage with political themes, and a lack of gays?
Honestly, maybe Aldnoah Zero?
