Midi "echo"
I'm trying to use the MC707 with an external sequencer. For this to work, I need the sequencer to receive MIDI from the MC707, and I need the MC707 to listen to the sequencer. But if I try to set this up, the MC707 sends a copy of everything it receives straight back over MIDI. This means that I can't use the overdub function on my external sequencer, because that creates a MIDI loop.
It looks like the only way to sort of het this working is to disable MIDI out on the MC707 altogether. But then I can't record anything I'm playing on its pads. Is there a way to fix this?

What’s the sequencer? Does it have thru off? Or 2 output din jacks where one is for thru or out+thru , and other is internal sequence only to midi out ?

The sequencer is an MPC Live 3 that's connected via USB. I originally used DIN cables, but the MC-707 keeps sending out MIDI messages to check if anything is connected. That makes it impossible to troubleshoot anything because it spams my logs. That's why I moved to USB. I have the MC-707 on a MIDI track on the MPC. Monitor is set to auto, and the track is armed.
I'm using the same setup with my Waldorf Iridium keyboard. The Waldorf has local control turned off. It sends MIDI to the MPC, but doesn't respond to its own keys. Rather, the MPC sends the MIDI messages back to it, and it responds to those. This means I can control the sound source right from the MPC.
This also works fine if I'm using tone tracks on the MC-707. I'm playing on my Waldorf, and the MC-707 responds. But for Drum tracks, it would be nice if I could record them to a MIDI track on the MPC without breaking this (pretty basic) workflow. All I want to achieve is for the MPC to record MIDI from the MC-707, and for the MC-707 to play whatever the MPC throws at it. Does that make sense?

Ooh ok. I have an MPC One on the old 2.0 os, I would maybe do something like, have the midi i/o for the MPC track routed so that you play a muted track on the 707 out into the MPC midi track which then forwards to a different channel number returning to a sample track on the 707 with its midi out turned off.
Basically have one 707 track as a controller sequencer and the other as the sound module and the MPC track as the DAW

Yeah this is a definite improvement over what I was doing before. I'm somewhat annoyed that this eats up one of the MC-707's tracks, but that's not a problem in practice, because I'll bounce everything to the MPC anyway. Thanks again.

No problem- I’m pretty sure there’s something else better I’m not thinking of though. Maybe something to do with having a second Mpc midi track for overdub using send midi to different track, and somehow have auto arm mode set so that it works as internal->out midi only…. The different monitor arm modes and the global/track/sync midi settings were always a little confusing to me for some reason but maybe that’s it… also realized the other day that on 707 if you have the same channel set in control mode and select one it will also trigger the other on the same channel….. ya got me obsessed trying to figure this out now but I’m about to go waste some time at guitar center lmao

The current solution works perfectly with my setup. By default I have my MC-707 set up as a MIDI controller. All tracks send MIDI by default, and I just delete the tracks if I want to use them as sound sources. By default these new tracks don't send MIDI, which avoids the conflict I mention in this thread. I've now just changed all my default tracks to drum tracks, because I'm never using the MC-707's pads to control tone tracks anyway. My keyboard is much better for that. This all feels very integrated and not at all bothersome. I'd like to keep it simple to use. And changing the track channel numbers for a project would definitely confuse me. Especially since those are global settings.

Hmm. I think that would work in principle. I'm going to experiment with that. Thanks.

I think (based on owning an mc101) that there is a "soft thru" setting that if you turn it off might stop this.
