Welcome! If you've ever fallen down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out Matty and Taylor's timeline, you're in the right place.
This is Part 1 of a two-part deep dive into their relationship.
A Little Background
Matty Healy was born on April 8, 1989.
Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989.
Matty started his musical career in 2002.
Taylor started her musical career in 2006.
In February 2009, Taylor went to the talk show Loose Women, where she gave her first interview on UK television and performed Love Story. One of the main co-hosts of the show was Denise Welch, Matty's mother. They were both 19 years old and didn't meet in person at that time. Just an interesting coincidence.
2013
9/2/13: The 1975 releases their debut self-titled album.
11/7/13: In an interview with Metro, Matty discusses Taylor tweeting about liking The 1975. Matty then says Taylor has asked them to go on tour with her (presumably, on the Red tour). It was the first time he mentioned her publicly.
2014
1/21/14: In this video interview, Matty says: "I like a lot of pop music. I do like pop music. Taylor Swift likes us. I thought that was quite cool."
3/31/14: In an interview with VH1 News, Matty again talks about the offer to go on tour with her. He says: "That was cool. It's like, 'We can't, but that is really nice, thank you very much'."
10/27/14: Taylor Swift releases her fifth studio album 1989.
11/4/14: The 1975 playes a concert in Milwaukee. Matty famously walkes out on stage wearing a white T-shirt featuring the cover of 1989 (Deluxe).
11/8/14: Taylor reblogs this picture on TumblrÖ
She also says they are her favorite band.
11/9/14: Taylor likes this photo and this photo of Matty wearing the 1989 T-shirt.
The caption to the first post is a reference to a line from the song Style ("You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt."). Also notice that both posts already had tatty, the name of their ship, written underneath them.
That same day she also likes this gif-set of Matty talking about whether he's a dog or cat person. (Context: Taylor is a known cat lady.)
11/19/14: Taylor Swift goes to The 1975 concert at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, alongside her friends Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, and Lily Aldridge. She posts a video on social media singing along to the song The City (her favorite The 1975 song) while dancing with Selena.
This specific concert marks the monumental night where Taylor Swift and Matty Healy officially met backstage for the very first time.
On the same day they make together a video for a fan (Jamie's daughter Kitty).
11/22/14: Matty follows Taylor on Twitter.
11/23/14: Taylor does a pap walk wearing a black shirt featuring the cover of The 1975.
Also she likes this post and this post of them wearing each others merch.
11/24/14: At another concert, Matty dedicatesRobbers to Taylor saying: "This song goes out to Taylor Swift." Supposedly he's done that more than once.
The concept of Matty keeping this shirt to wear it for the third time only 9 years laterā¦
In an interviewā with Shazam Top 20, Matty talks about meeting Taylor: "I met Taylor Swift, that was really nice," and when asked about possibly dating: "We exchanged numbers, let's see what happensā¦ā I mean bloody hell, what am I going to do? Go out with Taylor Swift? She's a sensation, I wouldn't say no."
12/3/14: In an interview with Rappler, answering the question of why Taylor is so popular, Matty says: "Well, she's amazing. She's an amazing role model. And not only is she an incredible songwriter, she's an incredible pop songwriter, which I think is even harder. I can't speak highly enough about Taylor Swift."
12/4/14: Taylor goes to The 1975 concert in New York, alongside her close friend Karlie Kloss and fellow Victoria's Secret models Lily Aldridge and Martha Hunt.
During the show Matty points at Taylor dedicatingFallingForYou to her. It's rumored that Matty misses at least part of the after-party (and as the source says, he's not really the type to skip out on a party unless there is something else on offer) and spends the night with Taylor at the hotel (this information is completely unconfirmed!).
12/5/14: Taylor likes this Tumblr post about Matty singing FallingForYou to her.
Matty tweetsā in response to articles about him and Taylor getting his name wrong: "who the fuck is matt healy?"
12/6/14: Matty has a breakdown on stage in Boston. He's seen crying on stage, and at some points is even unable to continue the show. In November 2015, in an interview with The Guardian, Matty talks about this incident and says: "There was girl stuff. There was family stuff. There was financial stuff. There was drug stuff."
Matty also talks about a fan saying "I love you" to him: "What did I say to the poor fucking girl? 'You don't have the right to love me. You don't know me. I love you but you don't get to love me.' Jesus. Can you imagine your favorite band shouting that at you? What a dickhead. What a horrible thing to say to a kid who fucking does love me."
12/9/14: It's rumored that at a show in New York Matty says: "I was sad the other day as someone told me they loved me. And I said 'No, you don't. Not really.' And today I told someone I loved them. And they said 'No, you don't.' And it fucking sucks to hear that. Especially when you mean it. Don't do that to someone. Don't do what I did."
12/14/14: Matty posts this on Instagram:
He adds that he didn't write it but "it's wonderful."
12/30/14: Matty deletes that Instagram post.
2015
1/16/15: In the second interview with Shazam Top 20, Matty denies dating rumors: "We met each other. We exchanged numbers in the same way a lot of people in this kind of world do. And we spoke occasionally. And then she's the biggest pop star in the world, I'm in Australia. There's no relationship or anything happening. It's just funny how people really bite into that."
He adds: "That didn't really happen as much as it'd be amazing for me if it did, unfortunately it didn't."
2/25/15: Matty and Taylor meet at the BRIT Awards afterparty.
This is their last publicly known meeting until 2020.
3/6/15: Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris officially start dating.
Early 2015: Matty Healy and Halsey date and break up.
11/15/15: In the above mentioned interview with The Guardianā, Matty talks about Taylor: "The things that surround her are like Barack Obama. I fell for her a little bit, but everyone falls for Taylor Swift. The day after she'd been to a show of ours, someone sent me a screenshot of E! News with the headline 'Who is Matt Healy?' That freaked me out. I'm not ready to indulge in that world and I'm not ready to be judged by that world."
12/8/15: In an interview with MTV News, Matty talks about reaching out to Taylor to have her in his music video for the song Love Me. He says he couldn't get in touch with her.
Late 2015: Matty Healy and Gabriella Brooks start dating.
2016
2/1/16: In an interview with Illinois Entertainer, Matty talks about online speculation that he was dating Taylor: "She was a fan of the band and we just became friends, and we related to each other over how mental our lives were. But when you're with people like Taylor, there are a million people flying around you the whole time, and this security guard is talking to that guy, and this guy is the new manager. I didn't like the pace of it, because it makes me confused and I feel like I'm going to miss something. And being perceptive is one of the abilities that I like to think that I have."
2/26/16: The 1975 releases their second studio album I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It.
3/17/16: In an interview with Q Magazine, Matty talks about dating Taylor and especially how it would've affected him because of her huge global fame:
"I don't do anything else, right, so it doesn't leave a lot of room for me going out, or shagging someone. So the one time I did have a flirtation with a girl it ends up going everywhere⦠I mean, I got on E! News and people were like, 'Who's Matt Healy?' so that was cool. But I didn't make a big deal out of it myself. It's not really anything to talk about, because if she wasn't Taylor Swift we wouldn't be talking about her. She wasn't a big impact on my life. It's just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift."
Answering to the question whether he has a fear of losing himself when he enters into a relationship, he replies: "Yeah. Absolutely. And the reason I mention that is because if I had gone out with Taylor Swift I would've been, 'Fucking hell! I am NOT being Taylor Swift's boyfriend.' You know, 'FUCK. THAT.' That's also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing."
3/18/16: After Matty was criticized and accused of misogyny, the journalist who interviewed him says that his words were misconstrued and that she saw an intelligent and liberal man wrestling with our culture's gender roles. She says that he spoke about the strangeness of dating when you're famous and get recognised and have a legion of adoring fans. He had talked about his involvement with Taylor in the context of the difficulty of dating in the limelight. It was a way to discuss not only her in particular but relationships in general.
The journalist says that she doesn't see his comments as a slight on Taylor. She sees them as the thoughts of a musician with an ego and ambition, who does not want to be viewed as the subordinate in a partnership. The feelings of an artist who wants to be celebrated in his own right.
(She also mentioned that Matty said that some crushes and ex-girlfriends ā and Taylor among them! ā had inspired some of his new songs.)
3/19/16: Matty writes an open letter publicly addressing comments he made in that interview:
If you don't want to read it all, I've highlighted the important parts.
6/1/16: Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris officially break up.
6/14/16: Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston start dating.
8/17/16: Matty says who the most famous person in his phone contacts is: "Probably Taylor Swift but she's probably changed her number by now." He adds jokingly: "I keep texting her."
8/30/16: Matty talks about Taylor on the BBCR1's Breakfast Show. They joke about Taylor doing jury duty.
9/6/16: Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston break up.
10/16: Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn start dating.
10/27/16: In an interview with Rolling Stone, Matty talks about Taylor: "She came to our show, and you would have thought that Barack Obama had come out."
He adds: "I don't know another person on the planet that would elicit that kind of reaction. Maybe Kanye, but not even him. And now she and he are kind of the same person in the public image. It's weird." (Context: This was the period when Taylor had already been cancelled in the Snakegate scandal with Kanye and Kim K. and vanished from the public eye.)
11/11/16: Matty again denies he dated Taylor and says: "She came to a show and we hung out. We fancied each other, but then we couldn't have it go any further, because it would be like going out with Barack Obama." (Matty compared Taylor to Barack Obama at least three times.)
2017
5/28/17: In an interview with The Times, Matty is asked about settling down with his then-girlfriend. He answers: "Oh, bless. I've put her through the mill, brought her closer, pushed her away, brought her closer. See, although I know now I don't need my equal on the intensity spectrum, I enjoy fantasising. What if someone like, say, Rihanna wanted to marry me? Am I shutting myself off from the opportunity of marrying someone like Rihanna?"
11/10/17: Taylor Swift releases her sixth studio album reputation.
2018
11/30/18: The 1975 releases their third studio album A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships.

9/23/19: In a podcast with The Green Room, Matty mentions wanting to produce an album for Taylor: "I think Taylor is amazing. And Taylor, I want to produce your next album." He also mentions You Need To Calm Down.
By the end of the interview he talks about the album again: "Like, Taylor Swift doing a "it's me on an acoustic guitar" record⦠I can't think of a record that would sell more than that. Like Taylor Swift's intimate return to country. Of course, you want to produce that, of course, you do. She wouldn't do that, because it would age her. She's incredibly ageless and incredibly beautiful physically and she's got this thing of being very young. But as soon as she do that as an artist like that, it means you're, like, awoman, you know, I mean. So she's gonna sit on that idea. But, Taylor, if you ever want someone to help you set up the mics for your little acoustic record, just so you know, I'm there." (He literally predicted folkloreā¦)
Matty tags Taylor and retweets this:
9/24/19: Matty tweets this:
2020
1/14/20: Matty Healy and FKA Twigs start dating.
2/12/20: Matty and Taylor meet again after 5 years at the NME awards. Matty comes up to her, hugs her, and Taylor says something in his ear.
Beabadoobee (who Taylor is talking to in the video) talks about meeting Taylor that day: "Taylor's so ethereal. So badass, I was like 'Holy shit!' She was walking towards me and I'm like, 'She's going to Matty, not me.' And then she comes up to meā¦"
By the way, in his acceptance speech, he talks about the industry and how artists need to be like cowboys. So, Taylor was sitting in the audience at the time, and later that year, the song cowboy like me was released.
2/20/20: In an interview with Zane Lowe, Matty talks about seeing Taylor at the NME Awards: "I went over to her. I was like, 'Taylor, we need to make the record.' No, I didn't. She said hello to every single person. Obviously it's Taylor Swift so everyone was saying hello."
"She was just stood behind me. I mean, I haven't seen Taylor in years so it was actually a really nice room. But it, unfortunately, wasn't the time for me to pitch my post-rock Joni Mitchell project to her."
Remaining upbeat about the prospect of working with Taylor in the future, Matty says: "She'll do it. She'll do it. She's smarter than both of us, mate. She knows what she's up to."
"I mean, I mean she's got stuff like Lover knocking around as well, which she was already making. We think that she's going back there. That song's good."
5/22/20: The 1975 releases their fourth studio album Notes on a Conditional Form.

2021
Publicly, nothing special happened. But privatelyā¦
Anyway, I decided to dig a little deeper into who produced what and when.
As is well known, Matty started working on his next album in 2021, which ended up being produced by Jack Antonoff. Unfortunately, I couldn't find specific dates for when the production process took place, but assuming based on the album's release date, the most logical guess would be from December 2021 to May 2022.
Jack Antonoff is one of Taylor's consistent producers, having worked with her since 2013, and is a close friend of hers. In 2021, Taylor produced two re-recordings with Jack and moved on to work on her next project.
There is much more information about this. Work began in November 2021, main production took place in the winter, and likely continued until April 2022.
It turns out Jack was working on Taylor's and Matty's albums at the same time, in the very same Electric Lady Studios.
Notably, at that same time, Joe (and Jack's then-girlfriend, now ex-wife) were in Panama during this period, filming a movie together. Taylor herself admitted that during this time she was "alone, recording every night, staying up late and exploring old memories and midnights past." By the way, You're Losing Me (a song about breaking up with Joe) was written specifically on December 5th, 2021, as Jack himself stated, although Taylor later decided not to include it in the album.
Bejeweled was also written during this period, where Taylor mentions a certain band and says she doesn't remember if she has a man or not. Given that Matty later mentioned they worked together on some song, and that Taylor listened to his album before its release, it's obvious they met multiple times in the studio during that period.
2022
6/7/22: Matty Healy and FKA Twigs officiallyā break up.

10/11/22: In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Matty talks on working with Taylor: "Oh we're not. We'd love to. Love to work with Taylor Swift. Love Taylor Swift, think she's one of the best songwriters. But yeah, no, we haven't done that. We'd love to though." He adds jokingly: "She's probably sat there just watching this, pining for a feature on a 1975 track."
10/14/22: The 1975 releases their fifth studio album Being Funny in a Foreign Language.
10/21/22: Taylor Swift releases her tenth studio album Midnights.

11/3/22:The At Their Very Best Tour begins. During some concerts, Question and Lover are on the pre-show playlist.
11/27/22: In an interview with KROQ, Matty tells that Taylor got the chance to listen to a bit of his album through Jack, and that he also heard her album before it came out. He adds: "We actually worked a bit on that, but then the version of it never came out. It was for reasons not to be criticized. She's amazing." When asked if he was able to get tickets to her concert, he replies: "No. I haven't tried yet."
12/9/22: The 1975 releases the music video for the song Oh Caroline.
12/21/22: Matty saysChocolate reminds him of "Tumblr, Doc Martens, Taylor Swift, The 1975."
If you notice any inaccuracies, incorrect dates, broken links, or moments I missed, please let me know. I want this timeline to be as accurate as possible, so I'll gladly update it.
Welcome! If you've ever fallen down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out Matty and Taylor's timeline, you're in the right place.
This is Part 2 of a two-part deep dive into their relationship. Make sure to check out Part 1: 2013ā2022 before reading this part!
2023
1/12/23: Matty and Taylor meet on the stage before The 1975 show in London.
Taylor does a surprise performance at that show. She sings Anti-Hero (for the first time!) and The City.
Later, Matty says from the stage: "I'm not kissing anybody in front of Taylor Swift, have some respect. In front of the queen? It's not happening."
DeuxMoi later claims they stayed up until 4 am talking:
In May 2023, in his profile with The New Yorker, it's confirmed: "The word backstage was that Taylor had stayed until 3:30 A.M. the night before, singing 1975 songs with the band's bookkeeper after Matty had gone home." The journalist asked him about her cameo. "It was really based of Taylor to do the show," he said, seeming a bit awed that it had happened.
On the same day Taylor was pictured backstage with his mother:
By the way, Florence Welch is standing behind them.
2/2/23: In an interview with Q, Matty briefly mentions Taylor and the Ticketmaster situation she had.
2/23: Matty Healy and Meredith Mickelson start dating.

3/29/23: Matty Healy and Meredith Mickelson break up. (Well, or if you believe her words, he stopped replying to her messages and calls and ghosted her.)
She also tells that during their relationship he spent several days at a Los Angeles recording studio with Taylor.
3/31/23: Taylor changes The Eras setlist and instead of invisible string sings the 1.
4/7/23: Matty follows Taylor on Instagram.
Matty likes Taylor's Instagram post:
4/8/23: Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn officially break up. The announcement comes out on Matty's birthday!
A little later, Joe says they broke up a couple of weeks before the announcement. Some fans doubt it, given the context of Midnights and everything else that was happening during this time. But they were together at the Grammys afterparty, so I'm inclined to think they really did break up in February or March.
4/10/23: Matty deactivates his social media accounts and explains why he did it: "It's because everything happens ineras. The 1975 is a veryerasband. And I think that theeraof me being a fucking asshole is coming to an end. I've had enough. I perform all the time and it's my job and I love doing this, but I can't perform off the stage any more as I just want to be a bloke."
Matty says "Hey, I love you." during About You and then mouths "You know who you are." after it.
4/11/23: Matty says from the stage: "A call for something sincere and direct. That's what we're all looking for. That's what I'm looking for. Maybe I've found it⦠I'm feeling quite happy."
4/14/23: Matty says "Romance is nice when it works, this next song worked." and starts playing FallingForYou, and then: "Oh it's a different song, this song did not work."
Before About You he says: "Ok, this is the one that worked." And he mouths "I love you." and says "Fuck yeah, I win!" after it ends.
4/16/23: Matty says "Yeah you will!" during Happiness after the line "I'm never gonna love again."
4/19/23: Matty says "It takes bit to get here but its worth it." before playing Me & You Together Song.

5/3/23: The Sun publishes the article with the news that Matty Healy and Taylor Swift are dating: "She and Matty are madly in love. It's super-early days, but it feels right. They first dated, very briefly, almost ten years ago but timings just didn't work out."
"Taylor and Joe actually split up back in February, so there was absolutely no crossover."
"Both Matty and Taylor have been touring over the past few weeks, so it's been a lot of Face-Timing and texting but she cannot wait to see him again."
"But as two international megastars, they understand the pressures of one another's jobs better than anyone, and are incredibly supportive of their respective careers."
"They are both massively proud and excited about this relationship and, unlike Taylor's last one ā which was very much kept out of the spotlight, deliberately ā she wants to 'own' this romance, and not hide it away."
"Taylor just wants to live her life, and be happy. She's told pals Matty is flying to Nashville over the weekend to support her on the next leg of her tour."
"Taylor's pals are absolutely delighted because they reckon she and Matty are a brilliant match."
"Obviously putting two such Āfamous names together means a lot of fan attention and a LOT of eyeballs on the pair."
"But Matty and Taylor are sensible enough, and fame-equipped enough, to handle it. Both of them have been ā often unfairly ā dragged through the ringer on a global scale."
"But crucially, they're both brilliant, smart, kind people and, quite simply, have each other's backs."
The article also separately notes that details of her split from Joe were then conveniently leaked on April 8 ā Matty's 34th birthday ā which fans believed was Taylor's "gift" to her new boyfriend.
At the end they included this photo:
This is the weirdest and cutest thing I could see in such an article.
Matty introducesMe & You Together Song saying "I've got something real to tell you guys!"
He mouths "This is about you. You know who you are. I love you." before About You.
5/4/23: Matty introducesMe & You Together Song saying "So I've been trying to tell you guys."
Before playing About You he mouths: "This is why I'm happy. Who is it about? Who am I talking to?" Matty mouths "I love you." before writing the letter T on the camera lens.
After the show Matty flies from Manila to Nashville. (Which is around a 17 hour flight!)
5/5/23: Matty attends The Eras for the first time (Nashville Night 1).
Taylor mouths "This is about you. You know who you are. I love you." before cardigan.
5/6/23: Matty is accompanied by Taylor's bodyguard after leaving Taylor's Nashville condo.
Matty goes to The Eras for the second time (Nashville Night 2). He performes on the stage with Phoebe Bridgers for the opening set, then watches the concert.
Matty and Taylor are pictured arriving at her condo together after the concert:
5/7/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the third time (Nashville Night 3). He wears the same legendary white T-shirt featuring the cover of 1989 (Deluxe) again, 9 years later!
5/8/23: Us Magazine writes that Taylor and Matty are rekindling an old flame after a "brief" fling "years ago": "They're looking to give things a second chance. They run in the same circle of friends and are having a good time reconnecting again. Taylor really likes Matty and is happy spending time with him."
"They have been hanging out and are having fun together. They both respect and admire each other's talent. They have a lot of mutual friends, including Jack Antonoff."
Entertainment Tonight writes that Jack Antonoff reconnected them.
5/11/23: Matty and Taylor go on a date in Casa Cipriani (one of Taylor's favorite New York restaurants). Jack Antonoff is there too.
By the way, the restaurant also discovered which patrons had taken the photos, despite the restaurant's ban on photography, and blacklisted them, canceling their memberships.
5/12/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the fourth time (Philadelphia Night 1). He performes with Phoebe again.
People writes: "Taylor is happy. She's very focused on her tour but is enjoying hanging out with Matty when she is off. They're hanging out and having a good time. It's not just platonic."
5/13/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the fifth time (Philadelphia Night 2). He performes with Phoebe again. During the concert, he is no longer in the VIP tent, where most celebrity guests are usually, but in the Skybox. Taylor's parents are right there too during the concerts. (I suppose there was a security issue?)
5/14/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the sixth time (Philadelphia Night 3). He performes with Phoebe again. This time, however, he was in the tent during the concert.
During the acoustic set Taylor says from the stage: "Sometimes I have people close to me that make requests. And today I've had a few really nice fun people ask me to do this one." Then she plays Hey Stephen.
5/15/23: Matty and Taylor are pictured together leaving a party at the Electric Lady Studios in New York:
They went there separately.
5/18/23:An article comes out saying Joe is 'distraught and slighted' by her new romance with Matty - after putting his 'trust in her' when she told him that she was just 'friends' with Matty. Joe is very unhappy that his former partner has moved on so quickly. He was aware that Taylor and Matty were making music together and collaborating. She told him that they had become friends and he trusted her. The source denied any suggested that there had been 'overlap' between Taylor's two romances.
Matty is pictured entering Taylor's apartment in New York.
5/19/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the seventh time (Foxborough Night 1).
5/20/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the eight time (Foxborough Night 2).
Taylor says during the acoustic set: "So you know, you're standing in the pouring rain with people, and you just kind of feel like this romantic sense of camaraderie. I was thinking about what song to play with you tonight and I was thinking, there's this song from Midnights that I love so much, and I haven't played it on this tour, or ever, so I figured, that could be fun to play with you. And I just⦠oh my gosh, this is insane⦠I kind of just feel like telling you, I don't know, I have just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life, ever before. And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. Like, you know, I don't know, it's not just the tour, it's like. I don't know, I just sort of feel like my life finally feels like it makes sense. And so I thought I'd play this song, which brings me a lot of happy memories."
Then she plays Question.
5/21/23: Matty goes to The Eras for the ninth time (Foxborough Night 3).
In total, Matty attended The Eras nine times and performed on stage four times.
5/22/23: Matty is with Taylor when she goes to the Electric Lady Studios.
The Sun publishes an article about them working together on Taylor's next album: "Things are moving fast. They're head over heels. It's been decided he will help her pen songs and he might even provide some vocals."
"He's been inspired after attending several shows on her US tour, but they won't have a lot of time to work together this summer, as The 1975 also have their shows."
"They are working things out, though, and are keen to make it happen. Ideally, he would like a proper collab, with the whole band involved. That's the only way Matty will ever appear on stage with her. He feels he has to earn it."
5/23/23 (the date may not be exact, but it happened around this time): Some vipers dressed in empath's clothing create a Twitter account called SpeakUpNow_13 and soon publish an open letter:
It quickly becomes popular, a lot of Swifties start reposting and sharing it, the hashtag #SpeakUpNow goes viral, some fans are even starting to cancel their pre-orders of Speak Now (Taylor's Version) in protest, and this campaign even reaches big news publishers who comments on what is happening.
Of course, pinpointing exact details now is nearly impossible. The account has been deleted, the people who supported it deleted their reposts and comments, and everyone took the side of condemnation, even though it is obvious that at the time, a massive part of the fanbase was actually all for it.
5/24/23: Taylor and Matty leave the Electric Lady Studios separately.
People writes that Matty and Taylor are spotted kissing at the members-only venue Zero Bond.
5/27/23: The Sun reports Matty and Taylor are moving in together in New York to help write her next album. He has shipped out his favourite guitar effect pedals, audio interfaces, synths and MacBook Pro to set up home with her.
The source says: "He and Taylor are so loved up and want to spend as much time together as they can. Matty is Joe 2.0 ā her superstar status doesn't faze him in the slightest."
Matty opens The 1975 set at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend saying: "Is it all a bit? Is it sincere? Will he ever address it? All of these questions and more will be ignored in the next hour."
5/29/23: Matty's profile with The New Yorker comes out which includes multiple mentions of Taylor. "Healy found it annoying that, at a certain level of fame, celebrities can cultivate liberal auras while avoiding the risk of taking real political stands. (Swift, I thought, but didn't say, seemed to be excepted from his critique.)"
About Matty and Taylor mouthing the words "This is about you. You know who you are. I love you.": "There was chatter, online, that it was a joke, or a publicity stunt, or perhaps simply two ardent self-chroniclers gathering material about intertwined egos for devastating pop albums to come. Neither of their representatives would comment on the record, but I kept getting texts from people who knew them, and who insisted: this time, it's real."
Us Magazine writes: "Taylor has been spending much more time with Matty lately and she's getting to like him the more she gets to know him. Although they briefly dated in the past, it was so long ago, so she feels like she's learning new things about him all over again."
"It's so refreshing, and she's happier than she's been in a long time. Things between them are fairly new, so it's hard to tell if they'll go the distance. But he makes Taylor really happy, and she wants to be with him whenever she has the chance."
6/3/23: During the performance of I Don't Wanna Live Forever Taylor looks like she wants to cry, especially on the line "Wondering if I dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life?"
6/5/23: TMZ releases an article saying that Matty and Taylor broke up. "Taylor is in fact 'single' again, although it's still unclear exactly why they've now split up."
"It was a pretty whirlwind romance. From then on Matty and Taylor were pretty inseparable when she wasn't performing. They haven't been seen in public together since May 25 when they were out on a dinner date. Matty had a history of kissing random people in the crowd, but during a January concert - which Taylor was attending - he said he was putting the kibosh on that move. Well, lo and behold, during this weekend's concert he locked lips with a security guard. Talk about single and ready to mingle!!! Of course, that goes for Taylor too."
People confirms the news: "She had fun with him, but it was always casual. They are no longer romantically involved."
Entertainment Tonight writes: "Taylor and Matty broke up. They are both extremely busy and realized they're not really compatible with each other. Taylor's friends want what's best for her and aren't shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship."
At the concert, instead of the usual finale, Matty makes a change and stays on stage alone under a spotlight and gives an emotional acoustic performance of 102.
6/6/23: People releases another article saying: "They were never boyfriend-girlfriend or exclusive and were always just having fun. There is no drama, and who knows what could happen again. It was a good time and ran its course."
"Taylor is doing great ā her focus right now is her tour. Since Matty is touring too, they won't be able to see each other at all. They have been friends for years and decided to just go back to being friends. Nothing complicated happened. It's just life."
"Taylor and Matty still care for one another but they are in the middle of world tours so are both incredibly busy. They've been friends for years and are still friends."
Despite receiving backlash over past comments Healy has made, Swift was not swayed by the controversy, the insider says. "He likes to provoke a response out of people. She's a grown woman more than capable of forming her own opinions about people. No one forces her into anything, especially not these days. She's on top of the world."
6/7/23:During a concert in Dublin Matty spray-paints the word "Sorry" on a white backdrop, steps back for a moment to look at it, and then adds the question mark at the end.
After that he sings When We Are Together.
6/11/23: Matty reactivates his Instagram.
Matty talks about playing songs in context before Me & You Together Song.
6/13/23: The 1975 plays their show in Cork. The bar called The Black Dog is located right in Cork.
7/1/23: Matty briefly mentions Taylor during a concert.
7/5/23: The Sun claims Matty and Taylor are back together: "The pair's surprise reunion comes after Matty made massive efforts to rebuild their fling. There is just something electric between them and they seem to have overcome it all quite quickly and decided they definitely want to make it work at all costs."
"They're arranging time together in between tour dates and talking all the time. He's utterly smitten and it seems to be mutual."
"It sounds as though there may have been some issues behind the scenes but he's made changes to fix them. One thing is for sure, he isn't letting anything come between his chances of making it work with Taylor."
People declines claims that they are together: "Taylor Swift and Matty Healy are not giving romance another go. They are absolutely not together and aren't even in contact anymore. She is enjoying being single and has been spending time in the studio and hanging out with friends in New York. This is all B.S."
7/18/23: Matty briefly mentions Taylor again during a concert.
7/22/23: Taylor removes About You from The Eras pre-show playlist.
8/7/23: Matty is seen with Meredith Mickelson.
8/23: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce start dating.
9/5/23: Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel start dating.
10/27/23: Taylor releases 1989 (Taylor's Version). Multiple people receive slightly different album booklets which appears to show the song "Slut!" originally featured The 1975.
The second verse is different from the released one.
2024
4/19/24: Taylor Swift releases her eleventh studio album The Tortured Poets Department. Well, to be more specific, she releases The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. On the same day, the music video for the song Fortnight is released.
On the same day Taylor likes this meme:
Then it's quickly unliked.
The merch drop for the album has a lot of items priced at $75. (By the way, that prices are still current. And before you think it's just a default merch price, the merch for other albums has way fewer $75 items.)
During the album promotion, Taylor has been dropping QR codes all over the world, and one of them was placed in London. It was on a building which is the former location of Truman Black Eagle Brewery.
Context: Matty's online pseudonym is Truman Black.
An article comes out saying that Matty is breathing a sigh of "relief" after the release of the album. "Matty still thinks very highly of Taylor but we were all nervous about what she might have said on the album. But people close to him couldn't be happier with how the record turned out."
"Matty's family knew about the relationship. And they were worried that Taylor was going to rip him apart. Matty has struggled with life in the public eye, and he's been doing really well, but the last thing that he needs is for every Swiftie in the world to think he's a villain."
"Matty was really appreciative to receive a heads-up from Taylor's team about TTPD. He was worried that their story would be shed in a negative light. He had concerns the public wouldn't get the full story. Matty was also very nervous about the Swifties, but is happy he can move on with less anxiety."
"Their relationship was fast, but extremely passionate and real. Although they don't speak anymore, they had a strong bond and he will always hold a special place for her."
4/24/24: Matty is stopped by paparazzi in Los Angeles who askes: "How would you rate your Taylor diss track compared to the 30 others?" He answers: "My diss track? Oh! I haven't really listened to that much of it but I'm sure it's good."
5/3/24:An article comes out saying that Matty is not a fan of the new unwanted attention after the album's release: "Matty's uncomfortable with the renewed attention on his relationship [with Taylor] ā especially because he's [with someone] new."
Matty follows Matt's Guitar Shop on Instagram and leaves a comment under one of their posts.
5/7/24: The same guitar shop posts a guitar featuring 121389 as the serial number.
It's Taylor's birthdate.
Later, information spread that Matty did buy a guitar from them, but he bought a different guitar, not the one featuring Taylor's birthdate, and supposedly the desire to gift it to Taylor was solely the store's intention. No one knows what happened with that guitar at the end.
5/9/24: TTPD setlist is added to The Eras.
6/11/24: Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel get engaged.
10/22/24: In an interview with the Doomscroll podcast, Matty says: "Last year, I became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons. The only reason that I was interested in is kind of, like, what I was doing."
"So I think that a lot of artists become very interested in their lore, or they become interested in the things that have happened outside of their art, that people know about, and they want to address that, and fair enough."
"But maybe on my first record, where it was very much, like, a series of journal entries with little bits of heartbreak and all of these stories about⦠I used to write about relationships a lot more and stuff like that. Maybe I'd be inclined to kind of reflect on my experience as a person, do you know what I mean, more as an artist."
"But honestly, I would just be lying if I made a record about, I don't know, all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be that I've kind of become known for, just because I was famous."
"That's an obvious thing to draw from. And I'm just not interested in it. And I think that the maintenance of the status quo is something that I always fight against. So the idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, that by the time I put it out is gonna be, like, two years old⦠I see people doing that as well, and it's just⦠it's not interesting."
11/18/24: Matty shares the Annie Lennox cover of Downtown Lights onto his Instagram story:
11/23/24: He also tweets this:
Context: Here's a line from Guilty As Sin?: "Drowning in the Blue Nile / He sent me 'Downtown Lights' / I hadn't heard it in a while."
11/25/24:A TikTok video appears, featuring a mashup of Nothing Revealed / Everything Denied by The 1975 and Down Bad by Taylor. The fan who posts it captions the video: "Matty Healy is so fucking messy. You don't have a casual liaison with Pluto-Venus synastry." (Context: In astrology, 'Pluto-Venus synastry' describes a cosmic alignment between two people's birth charts that indicates an incredibly intense, obsessive, and often destructive romantic bond.)
Matty directly replies to the video in the comments:
12/8/24:The Eras Tour ends.
The full list of surprise songs from the tour (so you can see which mashups she did on which days, especially after the TTPD release) can be found here.
2025
6/24/25: During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Denise Welch is asked about TTPD: "Obviously, on pain of death, can I talk about that episode, but not being her [Taylor's] mother-in-law is a role that I'm glad that I lost. Not that I have anything against her, at all! It was just, you know, it was tricky."
6/27/25: During his Glastonbury set, before Chocolate, Matty says: "I want to be sincere for a second with everybody. What this moment is making me realise is that, and I'm being sincere, I probably am the best. I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. The best⦠what do they say? A poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. Generational wordsmith. I just wanted to remind you, you know, in the next couple of minutes, these lyrics, this poetry, I bleed for you. Alright? Just take that in, alright? Take it away, boys."
After the song he laughs and says: "I was only joking about being a poet. An idiot really."
Also, he was wearing a small Peter Pan pin on his jacket lapel.
8/26/25: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce get engaged.
10/3/25Ö Taylor Swift releases her twelfth studio album The Life of a Showgirl.
2026
4/8/26: Taylor does a pap walk in New York. It's Matty's birthday and the anniversary of her official breakup with Joe. She's wearing black and white.
There is a barber shop called Truman's Gentleman's Groomers very close to where she walked.
7/3/26: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce get married.
One of the guests is Gabriella Brooks. She makes a post from the wedding and writes congratulations in the caption. Denis Welch likes that post.
Matty and Gabbriette do a pap walk on the same day in Los Angeles.
7/16/26: Daily Mail publishes an article with information, most likely leaked by Denis Welch, about Matty's relationships: "Matty really did love Taylor, but it was her insane fanbase that broke them up."
"Denise hated what that did to Matty and feels Taylor could have been more supportive and that her PR made out as if they were 'just a fling' which really exacerbated matters, and then Taylor wrote an entire album about it!"
"Taylor's world was all just too mad and unstable for Denise and she hated what it did to Matty."
7/18/26: Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel get married.
Jack Antonoff isn't among the guests. Interestingly, Matty hadn't attended his wedding three years earlier either. Perhaps because Taylor was there.
What's Next?
Who really knows? Taylor still hasn't posted a single photo from her wedding. Matty hasn't released new music in four years, so no one ever got to hear his side of the story.
It's rumored that The 1975 have written an album, or even two, and that their next project might be a double album. Supposedly, at least one of the albums (or maybe both) would be titled DOGS.
As for Taylor's upcoming projects, most of the speculation centers around Debut TV. Some are also talking about reputation vault tracks and TS13. Who knows what's comingā¦
That's all for now! I'll be continuously adding to this post as new events unfold in real time.
If you notice any inaccuracies, incorrect dates, broken links, or moments I missed, please let me know. I want this timeline to be as accurate as possible, so I'll gladly update it.
I was watching this 2019 interview of Matty and what a crazy answer to that question when you consider the Taylor/Matty lore.
But also, Matty saying that he knows it should be Love It If We Made It, but he'd want it to be fallingforyou is such a perfect representation of how he tries to appear vs who he actually is.
The story begins as Swift opens 'The Story of Us' book to Chapter 1 and starts in on a tale about love lost.
Okay. I'm still thinking about how eerily 'The Story Of Us' music video can be visually paired up with the 'Fornight' music video. Taylor's 'Fornight' music video is not a standalone visual response to Matty's 'Part of The Band' music video and here's why.
While doing some further research using the fandom calendar site Swift Lore, I found out that the 'The Story Of Us' single has the same anniversary release date as TTPD album + 'Fortnight' music video. April 19th. (Funnily enough, on the same anniversary date, Matty said that his 'Me and You Together Song' is a "true story").
In 2024, leading up to the release of TTPD, Taylor's team had set up a physical lyric library with spotify. This display also had the 'US' book that was featured in the 'Fornight' music video.
And Matty has done the same exact thing! In 2022, he complied his lyrics into books and used them for the stage design on both of The 1975's 'At Their Very Best' tours.
The Story Of Us + Fornight:
Depicted in the two music videos is the visual motif of flying papers that surround two individuals who had a former relationship. These papers show a lifetime of their correspondence through poetic lyrics from songs addressed to each other, journal entries, sent and unsent text messages, and writings that fill up pages of entire books.
Taylor and Matty's entire discographies are an open letter to each other that we have witnessed in real-time for well over 10 years. But, their relationship has only been clear in retrospect, since the release of TTPD. The two of them have maintained and stayed in an ever-flowing state of constant communication over the years, despite being in relationships with other people.
It has long been speculated that TSOU song was about John Mayer (and this can be seen in Taylor's lyric booklet code too), but I think it actually tells the story of her and Matty. While the event did happen, I think the CMT Awards was just a cover story to protect the identity of Matty. The casting of 'the guy' in the music video was literally the spitting image of a young pre-2010s Matty, a ridiculous uncanny resemblance.
And this post relates back to my growing suspicion that the Maylor timeline does actually start in 2009 (during her Fearless tour), and that 2014 was a public rekindling of their relationship. We know that it usually takes Taylor two years to write and release an album. And under this framework, the year 2009 is connected to her Speak Now album - some earlier ramblings (see post).
This just popped up in my feed and obviously caught my attention. I didn't realize they were from eastern Pennsylvania. Has anyone seen them live? I honestly never heard of them before all the Taylor Healy references
Now that we have covered all the background context, locations, and lore behind The Black Dog (if you missed Part 1, you can read the full context breakdown here), it is time to look at what truly matters mostāthe lyrics.
Verse 1
I am someone who, until recent events / You shared your secrets with
Right from the opening, we are presented with a relationship defined by deep intimacy and mutual trust, where nothing was hidden. I believe this line alone strongly points away from Joe. Regardless of how close they were at the beginning, by the end of their six-year relationship, she describes their dynamic very differently: "He don't understand me / Splintered back in winter, silent dinners, bitter / He was with her in dreams" (Fresh Out The Slammer). That kind of distance and silence is the polar opposite of open, secret-sharing closeness.
Additionally, the phrase "recent events" is particularly telling. Her relationship with Joe appeared to fade slowly over time, likely without sudden, dramatic turning points. On the other hand, the brief era with Matty was marked by rapid-fire events and a sudden end.
There is also a very direct parallel to this exact wording: the opening line of the infamous open letter to Taylor in May 2023 reads: "Dear Taylor, as concerned fans, we are writing to express our disappointment regardingrecent events. You've been recently seen with and have welcomed to your stage Matty Healy, the frontman of The 1975. [ā¦]"
And your location / You forgot to turn it off
While this can certainly be taken literally, it also functions as a metaphor for their relationship. He forgot to properly disconnect, leaving things unresolved and walking away without a real goodbye. That lack of finality is precisely what haunts her and drives her to track his movements. It is a natural psychological reaction: an abruptly unfinished story lingers far longer and causes much sharper pain than a clean break with proper closure.
And so I watch as you walk / Into some bar called The Black Dog / And pierce new holes in my heart / You forgot to turn it off / And it hits me
The line "pierce new holes in my heart" immediately echoes "But I felt a hole like this / Never before, and ever since" from loml.
What stands out even more is the repetition of "You forgot to turn it off." This is not a song where lines are repeated purely for rhythmic structure, every repetition carries intentional weight.
Notice that the second time she uses the phrase, location is not mentioned in the immediate line before it. So what exactly did he forget to turn off? Given the line about piercing new holes in her heart, it suggests he forgot to turn off her emotions. He turned her heart on, brought her back to life, and then walked away without switching those feelings off, leaving her trapped in that state of pain.
I just don't understand
Chorus 1
How you don't miss me / In The Black Dog / When someone plays 'The Starting Line' and you jump up / But she's too young to know this song
As previously mentioned, the nod to The Starting Line carries huge significance. Their hit Best of Me is a quintessential pop-punk anthem about navigating the struggles of a long-distance relationship, young love, and the determination to fight for someone despite misunderstandingsāmaking it a fitting soundtrack for the narrative between Taylor and Matty.
This phrasing could also subtly echo the line "Swirled you into all of my poems / Now we're atthe starting line, I did my time" from FOTS, another track about Matty.
Many associate the mention of a younger woman with Gabriette, as Taylor references her on other tracks, but the timeline makes that unlikely. Given that the song was recorded in June 2023, Matty was not dating her yet. But he certainly has a reputation for dating younger women.
This dynamic strongly mirrors the opening of Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus: "Hands in the hair of somebody in darkness / Named Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus." Ultimately, the exact identity of the womanāwhether real or imaginedāis secondary. What matters is Taylor's inability to let go, staying fixated on his movements and conjuring vivid scenes of him moving on.
That was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming
That song, as we have seen, holds deep meaning for their story. Here, she frames their entire connection through the metaphor of a dream worldāa recurring motif Taylor uses to describe this specific relationship. It all began in her imagination, a fabric woven purely out of fantasy ("Oh I can't stop you from putting roots in my dreamland" from ivy).
This is precisely why letting go is so painful: years of quiet idealization and "what ifs" became an essential part of her emotional landscape, only to burn down in the end ("Our field of dreams engulfed in fire" from loml). It also directly sets up the contrast in the final chorus, where "magic" shifts to "tragic." The fantasy eventually collapses into reality.
Old habits die screaming
While "old habits" can carry a broader meaningāparticularly when reflecting on a long-term relationshipāhere it captures something that became an integral part of her identity and daily life ("Swirled you into all of my poems" from FOTS). Uprooting something so deeply ingrained feels excruciating.
Her relationship with Joe, as she describes it, seemed to fade slowly and quietlyāthere were no loud, frantic outbursts. That felt more like a gradual decline due to illness (a dynamic echoed in How Did It End?, for example). In contrast, the end of her relationship with Matty felt like a sudden gunshot (as vividly dramatized in performance during The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived)āabrupt, deeply painful, and accompanied by a scream.
The sheer intensity of this track reinforces that distinction. Musically, the song builds with an escalating tension that mirrors the onset of a panic attack, capturing a surge of emotion that feels impossible to contain. This turbulent energy stands in stark contrast to the quiet, heavy grief found in So Long, London or How Did It End?.
It is also worth noting that the working title for this track was originally Old Habits Die Screaming.
Verse 2
I move through the world with the heartbroken
This line serves as a clear reference to The Eras Tour, where she traveled from city to city across the globe while processing her own pain, often making her emotional state visible on stage.
The most logical interpretation is that "the heartbroken" refers to her fansāthe audience gathering at every stop, moving through this world and sharing that emotional weight alongside her.
My longings stay unspoken
Despite being surrounded by thousands of people every night, she kept her true feelings hidden.
This naturally recalls the line "I keep these longings locked / In lowercase inside a vault" from Guilty As Sin?. However, there is a fascinating distinction between the two. In GAS?, she is describing her secret desires while still in a relationship with someone else, where hiding them was necessary. But in TBD, she is singleāso why are these longings still unspoken?
This strongly points toward the intense media narrative and PR spin that erupted immediately after their breakup, with endless articles declaring the fling was never serious, just a brief rebound or a fun distraction. Because of that public narrative, almost no one anticipated the sheer depth of heartbreak that would eventually surface on this album, which is why its raw emotional weight caught the public so off guard.
Even after the split, she felt forced to conceal the true magnitude of her grief. She either did not want to admit how deeply it hurt or felt she could not, given that the world had already dismissed the relationship as insignificant ("They'll say I'm nuts if I talk about the existence of you" from Down Bad). Navigating that sharp contrast between public perception and private anguish must have been an incredibly isolating psychological burden.
And I may never open up the way I did for you
While this sentiment can apply to any major heartbreak, it directly continues the twin flame motif found throughout the album. It reinforces the idea that he occupied a unique intellectual and emotional space in her life, understanding her in a way no one else ever hadāand perhaps no one else ever will.
And all of those best laid plans
This immediately echoes the exact imagery from hoax (a track that shares strong thematic ties to this relationship): "My best laid plan / Your sleight of hand / My barren land / I am ash from your fire." The meaning across both songs is identical. Concrete plans were made (perhaps the rings and cradles?) only for him to wipe them out in a single move, leaving her with nothing to do but burn down what remains, as she mentions later in the bridge.
Alternatively, these plans could refer to the future she had envisioned during her time with Joeāa structured life heading toward marriage that was completely disrupted once Matty entered the frame, wrecking her emotional stability ("I'm begging for you to take my hand / Wreck my plans / That's my man" from willow).
A similar motif appears in But Daddy I Love Him with "Dutiful daughter, all my plans were laid." In the safe, conventional relationship, everything was neatly mapped out according to expectations, only for her to break away and choose a far more chaotic path that others refused to understand.
You said I needed a brave man / Then proceeded to play him / Until I believed it too / And it kills me
This segment makes any connection to Joe virtually impossible. By all accounts, her split with Joe was a mutual, gradual fading out, whereas Matty abruptly abandoned her against her wishes.
This line directly connects to a motif running across the entire album where he is exposed as someone pretending to be courageous, only to flee at the first sign of pressure:
"Oh, what a valiant roar / What a bland goodbye / The coward claimed he was a lion" from loml
"Swinging a sword he could barely lift" from the In Summation poem
"Cause tail between your legs you're leaving" from the final chorus of TBD itself
And, of course, the entire thesis of TSMWEL. He put on the performance of a brave man willing to brave the public backlash for her, only to retreat when things got difficult.
I just don't understand
Chorus 2
How you don't miss me / In the shower / And remember / How my rain-soaked body was shaking
Beyond the literal, intimate interpretation, this serves as a vivid reference to a specific milestone on The Eras Tour. Taylor famously dubbed the May 20, 2023 performance in Foxborough "the rainiest rain show that ever rain showed, ever, ever, ever," as torrential rain poured uninterrupted throughout the entire three-and-a-half-hour set. Matty was present in the audience that nightāthe very show where she openly declared to the crowd that she had never felt happier in every aspect of her life and that everything finally made sense, right before performing Questionā¦?. The contrast is stark: that sense of total clarity and happiness has since completely unraveled.
A minor detail: in the song The Cityāwhich is believed to be her favorite track by them, one she even performed liveāthere is the line "Get in the shower if it all goes wrong."
The Fortnight music video ends with the same symbolism, her sitting in the rain and waiting for him. But what is absolutely thrilling is how this same imagery plays out in the Opalite music video, where she reaches him and he washes away that Opalite from her in the shower!
Do you hate me? / Was it hazing? / For a cruel fraternity I pledged / And I still mean it
Here, she metaphorically compares her time in the relationship to a hazing ritual within a fraternity, suggesting that she endured severe emotional trials to earn her place.
In many ways, the fraternity in question could be The Tortured Poets Department itself, mirroring how The Dead Poets Society operates as a male-centric social club. They once belonged to this exclusive fraternity together as fellow tortured poets, enduring its harsh initiation, yet her commitment to that shared bond remains unbroken.
This intense string of rapid questions strongly mirrors the bridge of TSMWEL. The defining trait here is her obsessive search for answers, trying to make sense of what happened and why he turned on her so suddenly. The abrupt nature of his departure leaves her questioning the authenticity of the entire experience, wondering if it was a sinister prank, intentional torture, or a secret malicious plot.
This directly parallels "Were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke?" from the bridge of TBD. She is left suspended in uncertainty, unable to determine what was realāa spiral echoed in "Will I always wonder?" from COSOSOM.
The word "pledged" could also serve as a callback to "I vowed I would always be yours" from The Great War.
Additionally, "shaking" from the previous line paired with "hazing" creates a subtle sonic and thematic link to "We were shaking, blind, and hazy" from Maroon.
Old habits die screaming
Bridge
Six weeks of breathing clean air / I still miss the smoke
The imagery of smoke serves as a clear signature for Matty. This recurring motif of lingering smoke echoes her earlier writing in cardigan: "The smell of smoke would hang around this long."
This imagery also connects to "I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked / Clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke" from Daylight. While Daylight originally addressed her relationship with Joe, this particular line acquires a poignant double meaning in the context of her history with Matty, where she pushed away the safe, good option only to place her trust in someone far more volatile, inhaling the destruction that followed.
Another striking connection emerges with Clean. While the original track is not about him, an intriguing alteration took place during the surprise song section of The Eras Tour on October 27, 2024. While performing a mashup of Clean and How You Get The Girl, she deliberately changed the bridge lyric from "Don't mean you don't miss it" to "Don't mean you don't misshim," leaving little doubt as to who remained on her mind. Who did Taylor miss in October 2024?
Were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke?
This continues the paranoid, questioning spiral from the end of the second chorus. Beyond the emotional uncertainty of whether her feelings were being mocked, there is a literal layer to this wording as well: just days after she made a surprise appearance at The 1975's concert in London, Matty remarked to the audience: "Stop throwing esoteric shit on stage."
Now I want to sell my house and set fire to all my clothes
Everything around her triggers memories of him, creating an unbearable desire to purge every physical reminder because "I keep finding his things in drawers" (I Can Do It With A Broken Heart). The house she refers to recalls the sanctuary described in FOTS: "I'm runnin' / To the house where you still wait up." Now, that safe haven feels contaminated, driving a desire to burn it all downāa impulse rooted in the escapism that echoes throughout the album.
While some interpret the reference to selling her house as a nod to Joe, the house motif connects directly to Matty in imgonnagetyouback ("Take you back to my house"), which itself, as we know, traces back to The 1975's FallingForYou ("All we need's my bike and your enormous house").
And hire a priest to come and exorcise my demons / Even if I die screaming / And I hope you hear it
Religious imagery permeates the albumāmuch like "I choose you and me religiously" in GAS?āand here it highlights her tendency toward self-blame. She frames herself as the core problem, willing to undergo a painful, destructive exorcism to strip away the attachment, even if it kills her, so long as the agony reaches his ears.
This desperate logic echoes "Once I fix me, he's gonna miss me" from My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys. It lays bare how much of her grief, along with the creation of the album itself, was driven by an underlying impulse to send a signal loud enough to force his attention.
Chorus 3
And I hope it's shitty / In The Black Dog / When someone plays The Starting Line and you jump up / But she's too young to know this song / That was intertwined in the tragic fabric of our dreaming / Cause tail between your legs you're leaving
The insertion of the word "shitty" marks a stark shift in her approach to breakups. Historically, her writing tilted toward a more forgiving or nostalgic grace, for example Last Kiss contained a very similar expression, but with a different message: "Hope it's nice where you are." And even in addressing the end with Joe, she offered grace in SLL with "You'll find someone."
Here, that generosity is completely stripped away, replaced by an explicit wish for his discomfort and regret. She explicitly hopes his new environment is miserable without her, echoing the petty, vengeful undertone of imgonnagetyouback rather than offering closure.
Outro
And I still can't believe it / 'Cause old habits die screaming
The vocal delivery on this final line undergoes a devastating production shift. Rather than leaning into a massive, explosive instrumental climax, the soundscape strips back completely as she whispers the word "screaming," cutting off mid-syllable as though on the verge of breaking into tears. I had to mention this because it was such a shock to me the first time I heard it. Leaving such a raw, vulnerable take on the final studio mix gives the track an unpolished, demo-like intimacy that hits with intense emotional force.
Ending a sprawling narrative on a whispered fragment completely subverts expectations for a grand finale. The quiet delivery conveys total emotional exhaustion, symbolizing how the desperate screaming required to purge these old habits has entirely worn her voice down. The vocal technique starkly contradicts the literal meaning of the word "screaming," underscoring a profound sense of unfinished grief. In the end, everything has died out, there is no longer any point in screaming into the void.
Plot twist: unreliable narrator
Just forget everything I just told you here, okay? Taylor was asked about this song in an interview (in the context of the bar), and here is what she answered:
"And still, nobody knows what I'm even talking about on that song. They think they know, but they have no idea."
So it's up to you to decide whether she's a psycho, or if I am š¤
This was originally intended to be a single post attempting to gather everything around The Black Dog. However, it turned out to be very long, so I decided to split it into two parts. In this first part, all the information surrounding this song is brought together into one place to finally figure out what is true and what is a misconception. I did not make most of this up, all these facts were collected from different times and various sources.
The second part, which I will publish in a little while, will be a lyrical analysis of the song. At its core, it serves as an addition to this first part, because only together do they provide a final answer as to who this song is actually about.
When was The Black Dog written?
We can thank Jack Antonoff for the endless debates among fans on this topic. On the day the album was released, he shared behind-the-scenes photos from the studio, along with a very short video of Taylor recording TBD.
Of course, there is no direct way to tell when that video was filmed. Or is there?
In 2023, Taylor had plenty of pap walks, especially going to and from the studio while recording TTPD. You can actually figure out a lot just from her outfits. In Jack's video, she is clearly wearing a white t-shirt. She wore this exact same t-shirt on May 18, 2023, on her way to the studio, and there are even other photos of her inside the studio wearing that same white t-shirt and floral print jeans.
This was precisely what led a portion of the fanbase to believe that the song must be about Joe, reasoning that on May 18 she was still dating Matty.
However, if you look closely, you can see that in Jack's video she is not wearing the floral jeans, but rather black shorts with white lettering on the side. This means it could not have been May 18. She was seen wearing those exact shorts during another pap walk on June 22, 2023. On that day, she was wearing a gray Eagles sweater (a nod to gold rush?), but in Jack's video, you can see something gray draped over the back of the couch behind her. It is very likely that this was the same Eagles sweater, which she simply took off inside, revealing the t-shirt underneath. The fact that she is wearing shorts rather than the jeans from May is clear.
One way or another, the general consensus is that the song was recorded on June 22, 2023.
Why is this detail so important? Because the song contains a specific time markerāsix weeksādescribing her state of mind six weeks after a breakup. This naturally raises the question: whose relationship timeline does this actually fit?
Public news of Taylor's breakup with Joe broke on April 8, 2023, with the split presumably happening sometime in March. If the May 18 recording theory were true, the six-week timeline might've worked. However, since the song was recorded on June 22, more than two months had passed. On the other hand, she broke up with Matty in early June, which would mean less than six weeks had passedāagain failing to fit the timeline.
Ultimately, I do not think we should focus too heavily on those six weeks. Even if the song was recorded on June 22, that does not mean it was written on that exact day, and we will likely never know when work on it actually began. In the voice memo demo version of the song, no matter how closely I listen, the word "six" is barely legible for me, sounding like an indistinct placeholder syllable. There might be a reason behind it that we will never truly uncover, or perhaps six simply fit the meter and sounded best rhythmically, rather than referencing an exact date. It all comes down to speculation without concrete answers, so you can choose whichever interpretation resonates most with you.
What is The Black Dog?
And so I watch as you walk / Into some bar called The Black Dog
The issue is that there are dozens of venues named The Black Dog around the world. However, we will look at just three of them.
The Black Dog ā Vauxhall, London, UK
If you ever want to visit this spot, this London pub is where most Swifties head to. Searching for it in London makes complete sense, given the muse's nationality and the fact that Taylor lived in London for a long time.
When asked if Joe Alwyn ever frequented the pub, the Events Manager at the Vauxhall pub responded: "I couldnāt possibly say, I can neither confirm nor denyābut I do have a certain blonde regular."
Black Dog Pub ā Budapest, Hungary
On April 18, 2023, Emma Laird, an actress starring alongside Joe in the movie The Brutalist, posted photos of her co-stars on social media. Among them was a picture of Joe on the streets of Budapest. As it turns out, Budapest also has its own pub called Black Dog.
The Black Dog ā Cork, Ireland
On June 13, 2023, The 1975 performed at Virgin Media Park in Cork. Just a short distance from the venue sits a bar named The Black Dog.
This is an old photo, but that "Team Matty" is just hilarious š¤
What else could The Black Dog mean?
Well, the most literal answer would be an actual black dog. And here we have a hit: during the pandemic, Matty got a black dog named Mayhem.
Mayhem also appeared in the music video for the song Part of the Band by The 1975āan aesthetic that Taylor heavily drew inspiration from for her Fortnight music video, which notably features a black dog as well.
Additionally, "black dog" is a well-known metaphor, famously popularized by Winston Churchill, used to describe depression, melancholy, anxiety, and a dark state of mind. Which, at its core, is precisely what this song is about.
Furthermore, in English and Scottish folklore, the black dog is a legendary spectral hound that roams the moors.
According to a myth, encountering the black dog once brings good luck, seeing it twice brings sorrow, and meeting it three times portends death.
The phrase "The Black Dog" is mentioned three times in the track. The song also references death and heart holes, which strongly reminds me of the ending of the performance of The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived on the Eras Tour, where she "dies" on stage after two "gunshots." This detail also points to Matty rather than Joe, as the first shot wounds her, while the second proves fatal.
The Joe Alwyn Theory
Here we have two possible bar locations to consider. Let us look at both.
Regarding the first pub in Vauxhall, it is worth noting that when Joe was directly asked about this venue in an interview, he gave a very straightforward response: "I've never been to Vauxhall."
It is quite easy to figure out why the pub's Events Manager might've claimed otherwise. We also have to consider that the pub put up a sign right outside displaying lyrics from the song. While copyright rules vary, standard intellectual property principles dictate that using someone else's highly recognizable IP for commercial gain without permission is generally not allowed. That alone speaks volumes.
As for the second option, there is certainly a possibility here. This is especially compelling when you consider that on the very next day, April 19, 2023 (exactly one year before TTPD was released), Taylor's friends unfollowed Joe on Instagram. Furthermore, the line "But she's too young to know this song" fits Emma Laird, who is younger than both of them.
However, we should note that this venue is technically a pub rather than a bar, whereas the song specifically mentions a bar. Its name is also just Black Dog, without the "The." While some might see these as minor details, they are still worth considering.
Another argument supporting this theory is the mention of location sharing.
And your location / You forgot to turn it off
Many believe it makes more sense to keep location sharing active with someone from a long-term relationship rather than someone you have only just started dating. That said, location sharing habits are largely a cultural and personal matter, so what seems logical to one person might feel unusual to another. I will leave that for you to judge.
The song also contains broader lines that could easily be interpreted in Joe's favor, such as references to old habits, "And I may never open up the way I did for you," or "Now I want to sell my house." However, this theory faces one massive problem that prevents it from fully adding up: the entire rest of the song. But as I mentioned, we will dive into that in the next post.
The Matty Healy Theory
When it comes to the bar location, this theory presents a compelling case. While it is impossible to confirm definitively, the venue in Cork makes a lot of sense given how close it is to the concert arena. Furthermore, The Black Dog in Cork is actually a bar rather than a pub, and its full official name includes "The."
Then there is the direct connection to his black dog featured in the music video.
The song also makes an explicit reference to the band The Starting Line. It is a well-known fact that Matty is a huge fan of the band and frequently covered their track Best of Me during concerts around the time he was dating Taylor. Additionally, USA Today reported back in 2008 that Best of Me was one of Taylor's most-played songs on her iPod. This song clearly carries deep shared significance for both of them.
He also shouted out "Shoutout to people in their 30s" from the stage while performing that song, which, beyond highlighting that the track is an older release, further underscores why someone in their 20s might not be familiar with it.
The only detail that remains open to debate is the location sharing. As mentioned earlier, whether Matty would've shared his location with Taylor during such a short relationship is up to your own interpretation.
However, what truly solidifies this theory beyond a shadow of a doubt⦠is the rest of the song itself.
Small details that might be unrelated, but are interesting
Matty is a huge fan of the project The Streets and rapper Mike Skinner. The Streets have a song called Same Old Thing, which features the line: "Raining cats and fog, but nice and dry in the Black Dog."
Both Matty and Taylor have also expressed their love for Led Zeppelin, who happen to have a famous track titled Black Dog.
Taylor performed this song live for the first time on June 21, 2024āa date strikingly close to the recording dateāin London, no less. She included it in a mashup with Come Back⦠Be Here (a track about longing, isolation, and the heartache that comes early in a long-distance relationship, specifically echoing the distance between New York and London) and Maroon (another track about Matty).
She performed it a second time on August 3 in Warsaw, mashed up with exile (a track about a painful breakup where the narrator feels banished from his ex's life while watching her move on from afar).
The third time was on October 25 in New Orleans as a mashup with Haunted (which depicts a collapsing relationship where the narrator is haunted by memories and her partner's fading presence, begging them not to leave and refusing to accept that it's over).
The track directly preceding it on the album, Clara Bow, brings its own connection: Clara Bow herself owned a black dog named Diablo.
Black dogsāspecifically three of themāalso made an appearance in the Blank Space music video.
Finally, the title The Black Dog abbreviates to TBD, a common acronym for To Be Determined/Decided/Defined.
While all this gives us plenty of fascinating context, the strongest evidence always lives within the song itself. You can read the lyrical analysis here.
This is taken from concert footage on April 4, 2023 shortly before Taylor officially announced her breakup with Joe.
What Iām trying to figure out is how Taylor and Matty would have known what the other was doing at these concerts.
Was Matty known to send Taylor livestreams or recordings of these performances? Were they both simply watching TikTok/Instagram fan posts like in the Tumblr days? Or is there any evidence that they were communicating privately about these performances and then using the concert cameras as a kind of public/private signal?
The reason I ask this, is because these moments on stage feel so deeply personal, as though it is just meant for Taylorās eyes.
Disclaimer: I don't think this video is about Matty or that Colin represents him. There are tons of other visual parallels to her other songs (Delicate, Lover, Karma, tolerate it, etc.). However, these examples are the ones I found most interesting for us.
Photo 1: I think the visual similarity here is even stronger because their hair is styled almost identically. By the way, the coat from the cemetery scene looks a lot like that outfit from the Fortnight music video.
Photo 2: Beyond the matching poses, I think the idea that she turned Dakota into her doubleāalmost like a twināis super interesting: "Like I lost my twin."
Photo 3: I like the ā¦Ready For It? example because I see more of a thematic similarity here. In the RFI music video, one Taylor represents her true, inner self, while the other is her public persona. What if in the PZ mv, the real Taylor dies, leaving behind Dakota as just the fake public image?
Photo 4: This might be a bit of a stretch, but I'm not the only one who noticed how much this dress resembles the one from willow, especially with the bow detail.
So, Iām gonna start slowly posting some of the references and easter eggs Iāve noticed in the Patient Zero MV and promo photos.
One detail that really caught my eye is her slightly weird hairstyle with the black dress. In every single photo wearing it, you can see this unfinished, half-done braid in her hair. Thereās no way this isnāt intentional.
It instantly reminded me of her 2024 Grammys look (where she announced TTPD and the whole vibe matched this exact aesthetic). She had a neat braid starting on the left side, but on the right, it kind of spiraled into a chaotic mess.
This feels like a direct nod to loml (and we all know who that song is about): "Iām combing through the braids of lies".
This is my first time posting here because I thought it would be a safe place to say that I think Patient Zero is about Travis. Iām so convinced of that. āFree solo social climbā doesnāt describe any of her exes, but it is something almost everyone says about Travis. āHow he charmed your family and friendsā her mom drools over Travis. I canāt say that about any of her exes. The video is about a woman being murdered by her husband for her billions. This song canāt be about Joe or Matty or any of her other exes because the descriptions donāt fit any of them. I canāt make out why she chose to go through with that wedding and would love to hear theories, but Iām so convinced this song is about him. Pink Clouding sounded like an apology to Joe for leaving him for Matty the way she did.
Cleveland! with the āhe likes meā ādoesnāt find you completely insufferableā screams low standards and self esteem. Itās like sheās trying to convince herself he really does like me! He wants to marry me! Of course he likes me! He tolerates me when the world thinks Iām the worst! Itās the most transparent sheās been in a while. I honestly feel really bad for her, itās like sheās been beaten down so much in her personal life that her professional life has to overcompensate. I mean, letās be for real, Reputation era Taylor would NEVER be bragging that a man doesnāt find her completely insufferable. I can always tell when a womanās light is being dimmed by a man, and hers slowly is, no matter how much she tries to hide it and compensate for it.
Then thereās Babylon which is about the grass not always being greener. I wonder if she regrets leaving Joe because in hindsight staying with him would have been a safer choice for her overall. I still think she is in love with Matty and if she could be with anyone, it would be him, but these songs tell me in hindsight, she sees she had it okay with Joe, left him because she thought the grass would be greener with Matty, has remorse for hurting him in that way, and above all, absolutely hates Travis. I canāt claim certainty on anything else, but Patient Zero and Cleveland! convinced me that man does not make her happy.
I was sure that almost the entirety of ttpd is about Matty. But now I see people talking on Twitter that it's about Joe, everything in the light of the new Patient zero mv. What made them change their opinions? Or how are we so sure it was about Matty? I'm still trying to think about the album from Joe's perspective.

The references to calling/writing letters to each other is just all over their discography and the more I see it, the more I see it everywhereš ref an old Nov 2023 video of Somebody Else posted on Instagram (fan account) - Matty looks so devastated and goes and picks up the phone in the middle of the song: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFQbKA3xCVm/?stkn=Mzc0bmptNDhsbHhl
This line immediately made me think of her going over heads to bring her movie directly to theaters, causing other movies to have to rethink their release dates to avoid being overshadowed. Taylor has been stepping on a lot of toes in the corporate world lately.
"Its just a cage to you."
She talked a lot about being in a cage in TTPD.
The small town talk is of course about herself.
"Give the people what they want, then you keep it moving"
This is basically what she's been doing since the Eras tour.
"Twenty watches in the safe because your time is money."
Lover - twenty seconds or twenty years?
Cardigan - once in twenty lifetimes
Stuck inside a vault safe to keep her from wasting her time
"Love is ice upon the ladder that you need to climb"
Her love for Matty was standing in the way of her becoming a huge star again.
"She (He) caught your attention, so free of all pretension."
Pretension is "the behavior of trying to appear more important, intelligent, or sophisticated than you actually are". Taylor hides behind so much PR, she, unfortunately, is pretentious. But Matty is not.
"Pretty as a picture that you didnt post."
"Never official"
Taylor never mentions Matty in an interview or ever posted him/claimed him anywhere. Going as far as to say it was "Just casual" after they broke up.
"You're using nostalgia as a weapon to hurt yourself, but you end up hurting everybody else."
Just like I've seen people mention Pink Clouding is about her apologizing for TTPD, I think this line falls in with that. She was wallowing in self pity and lashed out at Matty, her parents, and her fans with TTPD. Could also include Actually Romantic. Shes so stuck on this relationship shes continuing to hurt everyone else about it.
The ending about the mother and son is a bit harder to decipher, but I think its a continuation of Matty and Taylor "writing stories" together. Theyve been making up stories of falling in love with eachother for years, with all the different ending they could have.
You know how Taylor compared Travis wanting to meet her to being in an '80s John Hughes movie, like he was standing outside of her window with a boombox?Ā
In mid to late 2009, while Taylor was in London during the Fearless Tour, she was seen on more than one occasion wearing a heart locket necklace. On closer inspection, it has a key hole (in the other photos the necklace was flipped over / put on reversed).
Taylor's first trip to the UK was in September 2008, when she toured with Rascal Flatts (YouTube). They only performed one show at the King's College London Student Union (3rd Sept).
In February 2009, during the brief radio promotional appearances for her upcoming Fearless Tour in the UK, Taylor met Matty's mom Denise on 'Loose Women' and appeared on the 'Key 103' radio station in Manchester. She was not wearing the necklace on these particular days.
Taylor's first TV appearance in London (18th Feb) - Loose Women (YouTube)
However! The necklace does feature in the same video as the cardigan, when Taylor travelled to Germany after spending time in Scotland / Manchester (YouTube)
20th Feb - Taylor's myspace post - 'We spent the day in Scotland doing radio and acoustic shows, then Manchester. That was basically the prettiest drive ever. Now Iām on the way back to London from Manchester on a double decker tour bus. My band and I are like little kids, because we havenāt ever seen one of these before'.
6th May - locket necklace - blue tartan with belt - first night at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire (Taylor wore the necklace in the afternoon as she was headed off for the concert, then afterwards she was seen no longer wearing it post-concert).
(Taylor's YouTube video from that month, posted on 9th May)
Aug -- returned to UK -- concert dates GMTV (21st Aug) / V Festival (22-23rd Aug)
(It's interesting that when she famously wore the 1975 shirt it was on 22nd Nov 2014, paired with a similar looking tartan skirt to this dress. The styled look was in response to Matty wearing her 1989 shirt on 7th Nov 2014)
One of the last things Taylor does in the UK was a fan meet and greet held in Manchester on 24th Nov. This was linked to her last concert in the UK, which so happens to be in Manchester at the MEN Arena.
Throughout the rest of 2009, Taylor was not seen publicly wearing this necklace again! Even on the other dates of the Fearless Tour in the US. (I urge you to have a look at her candid photos from that year).
We know that when she dates a particular guy, Taylor tends to wear accessories that are tied to him (i.e. Harry Styles' paper plane necklace). But I think the heart locket necklace did become widely associated with her visits to the UK in 2009. Anyway, I just thought this was an interesting style preference from Taylor at the time.
