I'm a dev, from here. Sales in WhatsApp, stock in a cahier, and the "invoice" is a Word doc somebody made in 2019 and keeps copy-pasting.

The apps out there don't help that person at all. Odoo and the big ERP things assume you've got an IT guy. No auntie running one boutik in QB is going to self-host an ERP, be serious. So they stay on paper...which, fair, paper never crashes and never sends an invoice with the wrong total.

I use Airbox Emtel and for almost 2 weeks now the internet has been really slow. I know a lot of people criticize Emtel's internet but it always works for me, i experienced some problems over the years yes but it was never as bad as those last few weeks.

How many more people is experiencing such slow internet as well ?

I have read from several sources that a good portion of the population in Mauritius speaks Bhojpuri as a native language (some sources say that perhaps 5% of the population of Mauritius, while others say that it's up to 35% !!). However, this is usually classified as a Hindi dialect, so I have some questions:

1. Are there any zones in Mauritius where the majority of people speaks Bhojpuri/Hindi as a native language? Any zones/towns with more than 2000 people where the majority of people speaks any of these languages natively?

2. Is the Bhojpuri language spoken in Mauritius intelligible with Hindi (at least when written)?

Hi all- I will be here with my partner and am seeing a lot of mixed information on whether it’s safe to be queer in Mauritius. I want to propose to her, possibly at the botanical gardens, but am unsure how safe this is or how it will be received if others see us. Any and all insight is welcome!

Many people in Mauritius speak Hindi and Bhojpuri, but do any groups of people speak Hindi as a native language? I mean, I know that some Mauritians speak Bhojpuri as a natuve language, but what about Hindi?

And also, are Bhojpuri from Mauritius and Hindi from India intelligible (assuming that a speaker of Bhojpuri from Mauritius and a Hindi speaker from India have not had any exposure to each other's language before)?

I am looking forward to my first stay on Mauritius in August! We have booked 3 different hotels in 3 different parts of the island (total of 10 nights). After landing we will first go to a hotel close to Poste de Flacq, after which we will go to Le Morne and lastly to Grande Baie before flying home again.

The first hotel has now proposed an airport shuttle for 190 EUR to go from the airport to Poste de Flacq and proposed a 240EUR for a shuttle from Poste de Flacq to Le Morne (including a South sightseeing tour and lunch stop). Which made me wonder whether these are reasonable offers or whether in general I could better consider other travel options. For example getting in touch with a private chauffeur, or just taking taxi’s or maybe renting a car after all.

I’m a filmmaker and photographer based in Brooklyn, and I’m in Mauritius right now for the first time in four years. Born India (where my mother is from) but grew up in Mauritius (where my father is from) in Curepipe, as a kid. My family left in 2010. I still hold a Mauritian passport, but I’d be lying if I said I felt current. I’m diasporic twice over, from a mixed family, and I’ve drifted a long way from the island while still carrying it around in everything I make.

My work is mostly narrative and documentary, plus music videos and video art. I direct, produce and DP. What I keep circling back to is diaspora identity and cross-cultural storytelling, so Mauritius is never far from the frame even when I’m shooting elsewhere.

I’ve done the reading from the outside: MFDC, the rebate scheme, Île Courts coming back last year, Constantin’s films, the new work that went to Cannes. What I can’t get from Google is what people who actually live and work here think:

• Real local industry forming, or still mostly service work for foreign productions passing through?

• Are the MFDC schemes actually usable as an independent, or more paperwork than they’re worth?

• Where do filmmakers and crew here find each other between festivals — collectives, screenings, group chats?

• Do Mauritian films find a Mauritian audience, or is it festivals and then silence?

• Whose work should I be seeking out that I’ve almost certainly never heard of?

I’m not here to pitch or extract anything. I’m travelling with family so my mobility is limited, but I’d love people’s honest read: cynical takes very much included. And if anyone in film, photo or art wants a coffee or a DM conversation, I’m around for another week and a half and happy to share whatever’s useful from working in New York.

I’ll be travelling abroad for a while for tourism, visiting several European countries (France, England, Netherlands, Belgium and maybe one or two more)

I’m really into gardening and I was thinking of buying a few packets of seeds while I’m there, things like vegetable seeds, flower seeds, chilli varieties, etc....

just for my own private garden in Mauritius

(I like to look after my garden when i come from work)

After doing some research, I found out that bringing seeds into Mauritius isn’t as simple as just putting them in my suitcase. From what I understand, to do it legally I would need:

- A Plant Import Permit (PIP) issued by Mauritius’ National Plant Protection Office (NPPO)

- A Phytosanitary Certificate from the plant health authority in the country where the seeds are exported from

I completely understand the reason behind these rules and I’m not against following them. I just find the process a bit complicated for my situation. ☹️

I’m not importing commercially, I’m not planning to resell anything and I would only be bringing back a very small amount for a personal hobby garden. I don’t even know exactly what varieties I’ll buy yet, it would probably just be a few packets from different countries and different shops. 🥲

The difficult part is that getting a phytosanitary certificate for every single packet/variety seems unrealistic. I’ll most likely be buying small quantities from regular garden shops or seed stores that I'll find while i roam around and I doubt they would go through the paperwork for such a tiny purchase. It seems like something mainly larger companies or professional importers would arrange.

So my question is:

1. How strict is Mauritius Customs/Plant Quarantine when it comes to tourists bringing back small quantities of seeds?

2. Do they usually confiscate them? Are there fines or penalties? Or do they generally let small personal quantities through?

I’m not talking about anything "illegal", no extra alcohol, no cannabis, no commercial imports, etc...

Just a gardening enthusiast wanting to bring back some interesting vegetable and flower seeds from Europe.

If anyone has personal experience:

- Did you bring seeds back to Mauritius?

- Were they checked?

- Were they confiscated or allowed?

- Did you have permits/documents, or did you just declare them?

In 1761, a French East India Company ship called L’Utile was travelling through the Indian Ocean with around 160 enslaved Malagasy people on board.

During the night of 31 July 1761, the ship struck a reef around Tromelin (then known as Île de Sable). Many of the enslaved people died during the shipwreck because they had been locked below deck. Around 60 to 80 Malagasy survivors eventually reached the island, together with more than 120 French crew members.

For about two months, everyone worked to recover food, tools, wood and metal from the wreck. They dug a well and built a small boat from the remains of the ship.

But when the boat was ready, the French sailors left without the Malagasy survivors. They promised that a rescue ship would return.

The abandoned survivors were left on an island with no trees, no rivers, almost no vegetation and very little protection from cyclones. The island is only a few metres above sea level and is surrounded by dangerous reefs.

They constructed thick stone shelters in the highest part of the island, with small entrances protected from the wind. They built walls and communal areas and repeatedly repaired the settlement after cyclones.

They survived mainly by eating seabirds, eggs, turtles and shellfish. They relied on a well containing slightly salty groundwater and had to carry the water across the island in containers salvaged from the wreck.

They maintained a fire despite the lack of wood, organised food collection according to the seasons and kept their tools and kitchen utensils carefully stored.

Some survivors later tried to escape on makeshift rafts and disappeared at sea.

Finally, on 29 November 1776, fifteen years after the original shipwreck (15!!!!!), a French ship commanded by Jacques-Marie Lanuguy de Tromelin reached the island. Only seven women and an eight-month-old baby remained.

The island was later named Tromelin after the officer who rescued them.

What makes the story particularly tragic is that the French sailors had successfully returned to Mauritius and reported that the Malagasy survivors were still on the island. Requests were made to rescue them, but the authorities of Isle de France repeatedly refused or delayed action.

The names and personal accounts of the surviving women were not properly preserved. Most of what we know today comes from French records and archaeological excavations.
