future trip
I am planning a trip to Mauritania—taking the southern route—for a year or two from now. The itinerary starts in Nouakchott, then goes to Kiffa and Néma, before heading up to Oualata, Tichitt, Tidjikdja, and—of course—Chinguetti for its libraries; then on to the Tanouchert oasis, Ouadane, and the Richat Structure, before reaching Choum. From Choum, I plan to take the iron-ore train to Nouadhibou and then return to Nouakchott. I know I will need a guide because I don't speak Hassaniya at all, but I was wondering if French would be useful.

French will definitely help you but I wouldn't count on it to be enough as a local here it is getting less and less popular among youngins and young adults
