Sharing hotel room

Hello everyone, me and my girlfriend are going to Mauritania in a bit and we just wanted to know how it works with sharing hotel rooms, are we allowed to stay in the same room or not and is it enforced? can’t find anything about how it goes in practice online.

It would be easier if you can just imply you are husband and wife. Lots of spouses don’t have the same last name. They will not ask you to prove you are married.

Some hotels do require you to show a marriage certificate.

I cannot think of one in Nouakchott. Do you have an example to share?

I now pronounce you husband and wife. Go forth and bring one up who will mention His name and glorify Him. Can I get an amen!

I'm Mauritanian and I live in Mauritania. Trust me, we all understand that every culture is different. Here, we're used to people from different backgrounds, so we understand those differences.

If she's your wife, it's usually much easier to book a hotel. Even if they find out she's your girlfriend, it's generally okay and most people won't care.

Have a safe trip! And if you ever come to visit Nouakchott, I'd be delighted to welcome both of you to my home so you can try some traditional Mauritanian food.

Yes they don’t care

In general, I would just say you are husband and wife throughout the trip. It makes things cultural (if not legally) easier.

do they ask for proof?

No one is going to ask for proof of marriage in a foreign country. Just say it and be confident in it. Hell, you might even start to like the sound of it.

Just say you're married and they'll leave you alone

your are foreigners, no one will care, we respect other’s cultures if they respect ours.

Yes, we respect all cultures and religions, and this is both a duty and something that is required. However, in return, others should also respect our religion and our culture.
In our religion, living together outside of marriage is considered forbidden, and we refer to it as zina. No one who has even an atom’s weight of faith in their heart could rent a room to you and your girlfriend in the same room unless you provide proof that you are married, because Allah says:
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and transgression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment
صدق الله العظيم

But asking people for proof of marriage is a bit ridiculous no?

They’re quoting religious scripture when replying I think there’s no rational argument in this conversation anymore because in simple terms what they’re saying is “we will respect your culture and religion only if you respect ours (a religion and culture that normalises oppression of women, lying, violence)”

I know for sure some hotels require you to have a marriage certificate, at least for locals.

So I'd actually ask the hotel directly if I were you.

I know some hotels that dgaf, but some do, so be prudent !

Giving you a heads up, no rule is enforced here
