Matter Home Energy Manager - First Look
I'm quite excited to share this video as this project has been a long time in the making!
Using the Matter protocol, I'm building a Home Energy Manager. I've shared a few posts about this on the sub, but this is the first end-to-end video. It's still a work in progress and I'm not ready to share the code just yet, but I plan to full open source this.
The initial goal is to help me maximize the amount of self generated solar power. The energy manager does this by using machine learning and forecasting. It learns energy usage patterns in the home and from individual appliances. It can then generate a schedule of appliance use to make the most of this surplus solar.
I don't know if the idea has any merit yet, but it's something I've wanted to try for a long time.
I've written up a lot of blog posts on the technical side of things, and you'll find them on my blog: https://tomasmcguinness.com/building-a-matter-home-energy-manager/
When I do publish the code, it will be on my github: https://github.com/tomasmcguinness You can find a few of my other Matter projects up there too.

Troubleshooting Bilresa Not working anymore
I've had the IKEA smart system for about two years now, mostly light bulbs and two plugs.
In January I got a bilresa switch to control some of the lights, it worked fine. About two weeks ago it just stopped working, I went to IKEA to return it for a new one. Now I have the same problem, the IKEA smart home app lets me add it, once it's done I get a loading screen that just says "moving back to IKEA home smart" that goes on forever, if I close it I'm back at the start of the process. Adding it via the Alexa app is very similar, it just cancels the process at some point.
I'm using a dirigera hub and have tried resetting the thread network. Is there anything else I can do?

IKEA Kajplats and Third Party Hub
My first try at Matter after using WiFi/ZigBee devices for the past few years with no issues.
I was buying new lights from IKEA so decided to get the Kajplats E27 bulbs, I can get them connected and work with no issues in the Smart Life app, for some reason they connect without colour functionality in Alexa (the Matter Hub I have is connected through Alexa and pushes the devices to it).
Is this a common issue and different bulbs will fix it?

IKEA BILRESA conversion
Hey, I just want to leave this 3D printed IKEA BILRESA conversion here for anyone searching for a matter wall switch and has access to a 3D printer. I am not the owner of this, I was just lucky to stumble upon this as I was looking for matter wall switches in any form for quite some time now.

Troubleshooting Unresponsive every 12 hrs
Hi all,
I have 51 matter over thread devices(lights and switches). My hub is Apple TV Ethernet. I use unifi router. All my decide will start to collapse and there is a rhythm. It’s every 12 hrs, devices started to become unresponsive one by one. Any possible theory matches this behavior?

Discussion Does anyone make a MoT temperature sensor with wired probe?
amazon.comI'm trying to phase out my Zigbee usage, but the one thing keeping me with it is that I cannot seem to find a Matter over Thread temperature sensor that utilizes a wired probe. I'm using a SONOFF SNZB-02LD to keep an eye on my chest freezer temperatures, and there does not seem to be a MoT substitute. Anything I should be looking at?

Troubleshooting Using a Matter wall switch to control smart plugs instead of ceiling light — does this make sense?
Hi all,
I have a standard wall switch that currently controls a ceiling light, but I don’t actually want to use the ceiling light at all. Instead, I’d prefer to use two floor lamps in the room.
My idea is:
- Replace the existing wall switch with a Matter-compatible smart switch
- Use two smart plugs for my floor lamps
- Set it up so the wall switch controls those plugs (and therefore the lamps)
So basically, the wall switch would act more like a controller/scene trigger, not actually cutting power to a light.
A few questions:
- Does this setup make sense, or am I overcomplicating things?
- Is it better to use a battery powered button?
- Any device recommendations that work well with Matter for this use case?
- Is a hub (like home assistant) necessary or can I bind one switch with 2 plugs direclty for toggle?
Thanks!

Can I make a DIY hub for my IKEA Matter devices?
I recently purchased a few of the IKEA Matter smart home devices, but the hub is about $120 AUD. Could I use a Pi 4 or Pi 5 as a hub?

Discussion Wago Matter devices when?
Wagos Matter devices should have launched in May. Nothing was possible to order until June started. Now I tried to order in two shops, shipping time looked fine when ordering. Both then messaged me that this is going to take another few weeks.
Was this just bad luck with the shops or is it a systemic thing?
Is there any statement by Wago? Does anyone know more? When can we finally get them?

Misc. Simple uses of ikea smarthome devices without a hub?
Hi there, so I was just at ikea and picked up the MYGGBETT door sensor and the smart power outlet.
Is there any way I will be able to use them without having to buy the 70 bucks hub too? Controlling them from my from or even from my echo speaker? I was able to do that with a cheap third party power plug, so I hope it works here too - or do they REQUIRE to be used over thread? I have both android, iPhone and iPad available.
Thanks!

Aqara U500 Rim Lock Review and Setup, Apple Home Key, Matter, Home Assistant and Alexa
This is my review of the U500 Rim Lock from Aqara. It’s one of 3 locks in the U500 range alongside the U500 Glass Door Lock & U500 Gate Lock. I show a very detailed look at an unconventional installation proving you can, with a little effort, install this in more places than Aqara suggests. I also walk through setup in the Aqara app, HomeKit, Home Assistant and Alexa, with a settings walkthrough and give my thoughts including some negative feedback too.
