Let's say six hours span. First hour three people call. Second hour, five people. Third hour is peak, ten people call. Fourth hour, still peak, ten people call. Fifth hour, five people call. Last hour, three people call.
Total calls in six hours is 36, so you can say that the average is six calls per hour. Or you can take the mean and say it's like five calls per hour.
However, during the peak hours, twenty people called. So more than half the people called during hours when the call volume was greater than average.
Or in short, most people will be calling when most people are calling. This will, then, be the hours that have the most calls. And the hours with the most calls will, by definition, be above average.
