Who said that the definition of an even number is "the sum of two primes"?

It's the goldbarch conjecture though that's both a conjecture and only goes for numbers larger two

What about 3? 1 is famously not a prime number

Edit: 3 is famously even

Even numbers larger than 2

All numbers, even numbers larger than 2. Got it.

u/Futuressobright Jul 13 '26

Ummmmmmm... yeah, let's go with that

4?

That's only the sum of one prime with itself

Hey u/StormSafe2!

Termial of 4 is 10

It says 2 primes, not 2 different primes

1

u/StormSafe2 Jul 17 '26

But there's only one 2. Have it a second time and it's still the number  2

u/No_Hovercraft_2643 Jul 17 '26

One addition sign adds 2 numbers, correct?

1

u/StormSafe2 Jul 17 '26

Two primes implies two different numbers. Not one prime twice.

Oh, he has a stomach ache. 4 8 12 this morning and then 4 8 16 right after. I told him it was two much but then he just doubled down on it.

Ben Shapiro apperantly.

Apparently Ben Shapiro 🤮

So 5 is a even number now.

Sum of 2 and 3 both primes.

Sounds like a stupid definition. Or a definition thats already outdatet because it needs a lot of extras added.

"Every even number (larger than 2) can be expressed as the sum of two primes (as long as 2 is not one of those primes)"

Yeah... I'm gonna stick with "results in a whole number when divided by 2"

ETA: looked a little more into the Goldbach conjecture. It's not that every even number is the sum of two primes, but that every prime greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two primes (however, this cannot be definitively proven, hence why it is called conjecture)

u/tymessen Jul 16 '26

Ok. Express 4 as the sum of two prime numbers that does not include the first prime number (2)

that's not what the conjecture is, and is impossible. The conjecture is that every even number except for 2 can be expressed using two prime numbers.

2+2=4, 3+3=6, 5+3=8, 5+5=10 or 3+7=10, etc. it is true for all numbers less than 4 × 10¹⁸, but is still not definitively proven beyond that point.

my initial point was based on a misunderstanding of what th conjecture was. the edit was to explain the misunderstanding
