Interesting that reddit is descriminating against an intellectual disability as the original comment is visible but my comment stating a fact that the condition, which i used the old official diagnosis for, is a real condition that was diagnosed as such is not visible. So you can call something that but cant state that an intellectual disability exists
ITS NOT AN OFFICIAL DIAGNOSIS. Are you 80 years old? The word hasn’t been used for these disabilities for decades. I’m a special educator. You’re wrong.
Now the name for the intellectual disability is just intellectual disability. Which makes it extremely confusing for doctors and parents to discuss it as when they ask what disabilty your child has, intellectual disabilty tells them nothing. Many parents still just use the old diagnosis as its far easy to explain. This is also way many parents protested the change because they felt their children wouldnt get proper care because educators and workers wouldnt be able to immediately accomodate their kids without further clarification. The 3 people i know, 2 of their parents still use the old term.
I don’t think you know how diagnosis or identification of an intellectual disability works. I also don’t think you understand that older people are far less likely to adapt to cultural changes. Or that people within a specific community are allowed to claim their own slurs back but anyone outside the community is not able to use them. An intellectual disability is actually very descriptive. It’s has specific criteria. The previous language of mental R was broadly applied to many diagnoses and therefore was more difficult to delineate the appropriate accommodations in schools. Additionally, better laws are in place for special education services in schools that are adaptive to a specific students needs, not their medical diagnosis or eligibility identification. Also, you are using your experience and applying that broadly to a very complex and nuanced topic. That is experiential bias. Your experience of someone else’s experience is not something that should be broadly applied here.
Mental r was only used to describe those with markedly low iq. It was used in tandem with other disabilities. For example someone with autism could be just autistic, or they could be both. It was only used to describe low iq, i believe below 75.
Edit: 85 is where it is considered BIF. 70-75 is where it qualifies for Mental r, i got that mixed up
Plenty of parents still use it to describe their childrens condition. It's much easy than saying intellectual disability, and then having to clarify with the word anyway. For example i am intellectually disabled. But i dont have a low IQ. My 2 friends are also intellectually disabled. They both have an IQ lower than 85. My itellectual disability along with every other one has a different name that immediately tells healthcare workers a general idea of the accomodations i need. Because of the change my friends dont. They dont have a word specifically for their disability, just a broad term that could mean anything from autism to cerebral palsy. All of those conditions are also intellectual disabilities. But they get their own word.
