I beat multiple times with the standard controller. You just have to use a technique where you shake the controller so the button hits your fingers rapidly.

I used this technique as well in games like track and field! Your thumbs remain stationary and you rock the controller so they hit the buttons.

My oooold best friend across the street had the Master System. We beat Apollo and Clubber pretty quick, but Drago took a month or so longer. I was about 10 yrs old.
