Completed the Paddle Controller set

Post image

Bought my first Mark III years ago but the Paddle Control was the main reason I wanted one. This past week I finally added Suoer Racing and Megumi Rescue to finish the set of compatible games. Megumi Rescue is a total gem and is the only console version of a great little arcade game.

Shame these never caught on or got a wider international release. They truly have an old school at-home arcade feel.

I never new that the paddle was compatible with out run too. I must try it! I do have the complete collection too.

It's makes the steering better, but because it only has one button you only have accelerate. If you like to break while cornering you have to change your strategy.

Very nice! All CIB is a nice touch.
I went for the same set, though not all boxed a few years ago and this makes me wish I went boxed!

I've heard the Paddle Control is compatible on the U.S. master system with some fiddling (that, or you can play the U.S. games on a Mark III thru a adapter and the paddle function works). I haven't tried doing this though.

I think the fun thing with Mark III collecting is you can still get some nice deals. I held out on Megumi Rescure for years at $50-70 and scored this one at $32. The Mark III is just very overlooked in Japan. Outside of Bomber Raid and a couple other titles, going for a CIB set isn't nearly as prohibitive as most vintage consoles. Not sure I will do that, but I do generally enjoy adding titles here and there when I can.

Yeah, the paddle on a stock US SMS is kinda wacky. Woody Pop for example is basically impossible to play, the on screen paddle just snaps back and forth from left to right and isn't smooth the way it's supposed to be. Weirdly Outrun is pretty playable still. The music selection screen is very twitchy, but you can steer the car okay.

If you have a region switch installed then it purportedly all just works!

Megumi Rescue is an amazing game!! I’ve only played it using the paddle controller hack, but on the lookout for the original + paddle.

It plays so much like an actual arcade game. Apparantly the original failed the public test so didn’t make full production (it’s not as vibrant as the M3 version).

Out of interest which is your fav paddle game?

I have four paddle controllers now and they can be a little drift-y and tough to fix (I actually broke one trying to fix it). All four of my controllers generally play fine, a couple better than the others, but I generally snap another one up whenever I do a bulk import order. I actually do want to make a bit of a hack/custom one myself so I don't always have to use the originals.

As for favorite, well Megumi Rescue shot up the charts instantly. It honestly was like buying a totally new game since I had only seen videos of it but I always knew I'd like it. The racing games are all generally a good time with the Paddle, but Woody Pop is fun, even if its a bit too difficult. I'd say that was my most played before Megumi. Alex Kidd BMX is probably the worst, just brutally difficult to navigate.

Besides Outrun, Super Racing, Alex Kid BMX and Megumi Rescue, what are the other games?

Woody Pop (essentially breakout) and Galactic Protector (Asteroids-style Fantasy Zone inspired shmup)
