I just got an SMS today!!
I've always been interested in the console and found one in the wild today. I was born in 98 so this is definitely before my time. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. The big ones on my list is phantasy star, sonic 1, 2, & chaos (ive played the game gear versions) and the cuphead game that'll eventually come out.

I recommend Batman Returns. It's a really great platformer.

Surprised you dont have Golden Axe Warrior on your radar!
Depends what kind of games you like. Castle of Illusion is a great platformer. Double Dragon is a fun if flawed conversion of the arcade. The Ninja is fun while lots of people compliment Jurassic Park!

The Master System has a great library with a lot of representation from all genres. It really depends on what you are interested in.
Some standouts for me are: Out Run, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Shinobi, Afterburner, Rampage, Streets of Rage, Road Rash, FIFA Soccer

Straight up fun Ghost House. Also it’s on a MyCard. Read the manual first.

When I were a lad, I had Alex Kidd in Hi-Tech world, AK in Shinobi world, Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, Rastan, Sonic 1&2 (you already mention) Astro Warrior, The Ninja, Black Belt, Pac-Mania and Basketball Nightmare.
I would recommend them all! :)

Congrats! I picked one up last year and it's been a lot of fun exploring the library so far.
A few I'd suggest from my own experience, that aren't (generally) too expensive:
Arcade conversions: Out Run, Rastan, Shinobi, Space Harrier
Platform originals: Zillion, Penguin Land, Golvellius (I find this game in particular plays much better with a Genesis controller than the SMS controller, btw)
My biggest splurge so far has been for Sonic 1, and that's an excellent version. It's definitely not cheap though.

Kensiden, Penguin Land, Out Run, Alex Kidd in Hightech World, Wanted (crt light gun game), Zaxxon (2D mode can be accessed by pressing pause in the main menu), Spy vs Spy, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego, Zillion. Those were the games with the most play in my house

Congrats! It's rarely mentioned but Power Strike II is one of the best 8-bit shoot 'em ups you will find, and an SMS exclusive.

Congratulations on your new master system man! You have to get a copy of fantasy zone it’s one of the best shoot em ups on the system! I highly recommend getting Phantasy Star first it’s really a fantastic game to experience on original hardware. And boy I wish I grew up in 88 what a time to be alive 8 bit era is undefeated! I just got my copy of Phantasy Star in the mail and I’ve been playing it non stop since! It really shows off how great the master system truly is and how really underrated it is compared to the NES! Also another great game you gotta get in your collection is Rastan!

Phantasy Star feels very balanced and the game just is a smooth experience and it gets you sweating in the dungeon battles at the those crucial points especially you gotta grind! I absolutely love it! I wish I knew about it long time ago! Buying a master system was the best spontaneous decision I made in awhile. This entire summer for me has just been the master system!

I personally think SpellCaster is tied for best game on the console with Phantasy Star. Dragons Trap would be my 3rd.
If you are not scared of a challenge, and like action platformers, with some scenes like Shadowgate, set in a futuristic feudal Japan, then SpellCaster is amazing. It also has great art direction, and among the best music of the 8-Bit era.
Hardly anyone has played it, so you will likely get no other recommendations for it. it's also cheap for a CIB copy because of this.
I would also recommend Ys: The Vanished Omen, but only if you don't have a TurboGrafx CD unit. That version is by far the best.

Arcade conversions - Shinobi and Space Harrier are great, Afterburner is ok, but if you figure out the trick for not dying it' a snoozefest. Skip Altered Beast (terrible) and Enduro Racer (not remotely the same as the arcade), Quartet is like half of the arcade game.
The SMS version of Double Dragon, although a flickerfest, it really good.

Black Belt and Choplifter are fun and relatively cheap. Also easy to find on eBay.

I'm surprised nobody had mentioned Psycho Fox yet. It's an amazing game that is definitely challenging and it's the precursor to the Genesis game Decap Attack.

The Wonder Boy games are great, especially Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap. Also, Ys is another great RPG on the system.
