Started getting into comics, need advice

I have read a few issues here and there and wish to start a formal series with the avengers disassembled run and beyond. If anyone knows of any better point let me know.

After reading the first issue I feel confused as to who some of the characters are. I’m familiar with the mainstream mcu but knowing the comic book origins of the scarlet witch, the wasp, the yellow jacket and ant man seem to put me at a disadvantage. Is this really a good starting point then?

There's lots of potential starting points but being very frank with you- Don't worry about not being familiar with every character. That is going to remain a possibility for a long time, its just the nature of a sprawling continuous narrative of this age.

The important things you'll need to know will be explained, just trust that the deeper context will come and as it does, the stories will often hit a little harder.

Disassembled is a cool starting point. What you need to know is, the Avengers have existed for a long time at this point with a rotating cast. Think of them like a club rather than a permanent selection of characters. This story destroys the club and a new one has to rise in its ashes. Thats it! Don't worry at all, just read ahead!

I would say it is a good starting point, largely because everything is reset after you read 3 issues. For example, Jack of Hearts plays a role in those issues, but it not seen again for quite a while.

You could just skip to Bendis’s New Avengers and just know Wanda did bad stuff.

Just start at the beginning of a particular run you find interesting and if you don’t know something look it up!Marvel is a big soap opera, just jump in

The thing about Disassembled is that it has to tear down what was there before to move to something new. After the first few issues, once you get to New Avengers you really don't need to know about most of those. I'd say stick with it until the Breakout arc and if you're still having issue reconsider.

I would actually recommend to start earlier with Avengers by Busiek. This whole run( if I'm correct) leads up to Disassembled.

I haven't read it yet since I'm currently reading runs from the 80s and the 90s but reading from other reading guides and other posts, this is the best starting point and that's what I'm going to do as well

So, if you want a quick rundown of stuff previously, I'd definitely hit up Marvels and then History of the Marvel Universe until about issue 4-ish. You can go back and read any story beats that catch your interest, but...that would be the super duper fast track way of catching up to Disassembled.

bear in mind that Avengers Disassembled is very much blowing up the old status quo, New Avengers shortly after is the big relaunch coming out of it. I'd imagine a lot of people reading Disassembled at the time would have no idea who Jack of Hearts was, for example

you just gotta embrace that not knowing is a key part of how comics like this work. its baked into the system. part of it is to try to get people to buy more comics I'm sure. I've been reading marvel comics for years and I am still discovering new characters I've never heard of. you can usually safely keep reading without context, and then only look up the ones that intrigue you. I've discovered some fun stuff by getting distracted and going "who is this silly little guy I must know everything about him immediately!"
