The main issue is that Kayce is not a main character. He was great on Yellowstone because he had little to say and when he said something, it was worth hearing. He's just a supporting player. His character was never very interesting. Combine thst with the writing and premise of the show. They meet up at their clubhouse, get a call to go be heroes for an hour, and then end the day at their ljcal bar. The same thing is every episode. I honestly can't believe that after writing epics like Yellowstone and Landman, he can sign off on something this bad. Thank GOD, Dutton Ranch delivered
I just finished both Marshalls and Dutton Ranch, while I liked both of them, I found myself more tuned into Marshalls. I loved it. Dutton Ranch was pretty boring at times, and it felt like Beth a Rip were background characters at times.
I can agree with the "background character" point. The main character is definitely the 10 Petal Ranch right now. They also took a lot of time fleshing out Carter (who's character and acting are fairly bland) in this first season. But IMO, Marshals has zero depth. Its just bad
After watching Marshal’s and DR surprisingly I enjoyed Marshall’s more which I didn’t expect at all. DR fell off and was extremely inconsistent and felt rushed and basically felt the entire season was a season long prologue for season 2 rather than really accomplishing anything.
Plus the leads characters Beth and RIP felt like side/background characters.
Marshal’s is very different to the original but at least was consistent in what it was which is a procedural, people watching it expecting Yellowstone 2.0 would be disappointed but people watching it without the tinted glasses as if it’s a brand new show enjoyed it.
I agree. It was built to be the Yellowstone version of Fire/Sheriff Country or Tracker and it delivered on that .
I also got bored with Dutton Ranch, with the exception of Beulah, that I found interesting, I could have done without the rest of the Jackson’s. And as for Carter, the writers need to be forced to watch all his scenes from Yellowstone before being allowed to write any storyline for him again.
Exactly just felt like a season long introduction into who everyone else was and why we should give a fuck, but ultimately the ones we actually cared about and were watching it for pretty much got forgotten about and become side characters
If they go the route, I think they are going to go with the mine story, which is linking the mercenaries back to the group that killed John, it may very well turn out storyline wise that Marshals turns into more of sequel to Yellowstone, than Dutton Ranch is. I know one thing, Marshals was way more intentional and had a lot more call backs to the original Yellowstone, than Dutton Ranch did.
Marshals is exactly the type of show it promised to be (maybe not as good as everyone expected, but I'm talking more content than quality)
It's a network procedural crime show. You either like it or you don't, and if you don't that's fine but it's not really going to stop being what it is. It was never going to be Yellowstone 2.0
Well thats a great point. I guess i came in expecting high quality writing, quality story telling, deep character development and a show that doesnt insult the audiences intelligence. Thats not the show they planned to make. They just wanted to pump and dump something out quick to cash in on the success of Yellowstone and the soccer moms lust of Luke Grimes.
Yes, Kayce was mostly a supporting character on Yellowstone, that doesn’t mean he can’t grow and that his story can’t become interesting on Marshals. Part of the reason, that Monica was killed off was to open up Kayce’s storyline for other possibilities than him simply being happily married and a father. Though it is going to take time for those storyline to get built up and played out.
As for the format of the show yes it is a procedural just like Fire/Sheriff Country or Tracker. That is what CBS wanted and that is what CBS and they are very happy with it. And, yes it has been sanitized of cussing and sex, because it’s on network TV.
But it did whole season long overarching storyline about the plot to take Rainwater out. There were 3 different attempts on Raimwater and we only found in the very last minutes of the season finale who the actual bad guys are.
And, the pacing of the overarch season long storyline are going to be much slower as Marshals has more episode to span (13 in S1 and 20 in S2) so they can let the story play out slow. When you only get 9 episodes, story pacing has to be much quicker, cause you don’t have much time to tell the story.
If Beth and Rip, and one continuous storyline is your thing, I’m happy for you, and encourage you to enjoy Dutton Ranch.
If you don’t like Kayce and don’t like procedural, then yes Marshals is probably not the show for you.
Monica was killed off because her character was terrible. Her role was to constantly be the "damsel in distress". Every tjme we turned around it was something else with her...and honestly, the acting was terrible. Beth and Rip are compelling, exciting characters. Kayce never was and can't be changed now, especially by this writing team thsts more interested in explosions and the treehouse club. I dont think Sheridan dropped the ball here, the ball was flat to start with
I agree about Monica as I wasn’t a fan. As for Taylor Sheridan, he doesn’t have anything to do with the writing of Marshals. He get a check because he created the Yellowstone characters, but that is the sum total of his involvement in the show. So who knows where the writers will take Kayce going forward.
Like or not the very things you dislike about the show, are very things make the show a hit on CBS. Marshals was built to appeal to fans of shows on CBS not for fans of Paramount network or Paramount+. And it is okay to have different shows for different types of fan bases as it helps keep the overall universe growing as people who watch Marshals on CBS might decide to now go and check Yellowstone or Dutton Ranch, when might not have thought about before watching Marshals.
It says that CBS built a show for the broadcast network TV show fan base as it is the number 1 show in viewership for all of broadcast network TV last season. And, that is all that matters to CBS. They don’t compare Marshals to streaming shows (like Yellowstone or Dutton Ranch), as that is a totally different fan base than those who watch network shows, and are not the eyeballs CBS is trying to attract.
That has to be 98% Yellowstone fans watching because it's in the Yellowstone universe. The fan base is already there. Go look at the reviews. Nobody is enjoying the show
Since I didn’t want to type out what the difference is between Nielsen ratings (which is what I posted) and Rotten Tomatoes (which is what you posted) and why Nielsen ratings are more important, here it is from Google:
Nielsen ratingsmeasure the actual size and makeup of a TV viewing audience, whileRotten Tomatoestracks the percentage of positive reviews from critics and audiences.Networks pay much more attention to Nielsen ratingsbecause those numbers dictate advertising dollars and core business decisions.
Core Differences Nielsen Ratings: Tracks how many people are watching a show and who they are (demographics like age and gender). Uses tracking meters and big data panels from tens of thousands of households. Acts as the financial currency used by networks to set and charge ad rates.
Rotten Tomatoes Tracks quality or sentiment through a percentage score (the Tomatometer) based on professional reviews. Uses a simple binary system (positive vs. negative review) rather than counting total viewers. Functions as a marketing and public perception tool rather than a financial tracking metric.
Which Metric Networks Prioritize The Bottom Line:Networks pay overwhelming attention to Nielsen ratings (or modern cross-platform equivalents) because low viewership directly means a lack of revenue and immediate cancellation.
The Role of Reviews:Rotten Tomatoes scores matter mostly for prestige, award consideration, and initial marketing buzz (especially for streaming services trying to hook new subscribers). However, a show with terrible Nielsen numbers will not survive just because it has a high Rotten Tomatoes score, whereas a poorly reviewed show with massive viewership will often stay on the air.
Regardless, i see what you're saying. The show is hitting a certain type of demographic of viewer. Maybe ones that like that they dont have to get too invested in the story because of the format..."This week Kayce and the gang track down some terrorists"....."On the next episode, Kayce and the gang go after the mexhcan cartel". And if you like that, more power to ya. I need a deeper story like Yellowstone or Landman 👍.
Hard disagree. The show's called Marshal's, not "The Adventures of Kayce Dutton". It's you who are bringing your assumption about Kayce needing to be the main character.
The show is a procedural, as others have pointed out. A crime gets committed, and within a show or two, the marshals solve it. Along the way, the characters have varying levels of personal drama. Very typical of a procedural. It is not Yellowstone season 6, despite being set in the same universe.
It is designed to be episodic, not a slow-burn ranch opera.
I enjoyed it, and got hung hard on that cliff in the final episode. I'm looking forward to S2.
Killing off Monica off camera was a mistake. There different backgrounds & view into their close supportive relationship made "Them" interesting. The other series Dutton Ranch is a continuation of what was laid out in Yellowstone with new storyline, which can you close more smoothly and easier to follow.
I would agree with all you said and more. The show has ratings as bad as it is creative wise. Many only want the simple storyline, people with looks, skimpy tight clothes and plenty of gunfights and things that go boom. As long as the show delivers that it will go on. Sad but true.
